Firstly, information comes in various forms, electronic or digital data is one form of data and solely what cybersecurity focuses on, which makes it a subset of information security. After all, "cybersecurity" will not help the vaican secure its scrolls they absolutely want to keep confidential in their backroom cabinets.
Secondly, cybersecurity is not IT. They are miles apart. IT folks don;t know security. I come from IT and software engineering and did not know cybersecurity until I actually went into it. IT owns and runs the infrastructure, IS (information security) advises, audits, and reports on what IT does. Hence why the CIO and CSO are ideally on the same executive level especially so IS can be objective in its work and both report up.
Thirdly, folks intending to sidestep the foundational knowledge to information security will not do well and are not needed in this field. People who embrace the process to attain the necessary background first are who are neeed and do well. "Being able to talk" isn't enough. I've heard people open their mouths and made everyone wonder how they got here and next thing they're thrown out.
Further, it's interesting when people claim you can get into cybersecurity without the necessary tech background. How do you know how to secure data when you have no clue what data is or the underlying media where it resides or how it moves and how it can be encrypted as it does. "IT" background is not the requirement. It is a "tech" background, which can be IT, software development/engineering, database architect, etc, I've heard it from recruiters over and over again that they are having to weed out folks who don;t have the background because many people are following this same advise. People g get cybersecurity college degrees only to find out that they still need the experience and certs. Jumping straight to cybersecurity is esentially trying to sidestep the tech experience. Computer Science is a degree that will give you the foundational introduction in various areas in tech. A college where I worked as an IT personnel, where students were taking cybersecurity degree courses without the requisite tech background srtuglled through it. When your techer uses technology tersm you have no clue what it is or does and you want to be charged with securing it is a joke! I've seen people who worm their way in get thrown out after being found out that they don't have the necessary background. These ridiculous messages need to stop. You can't secure what you have a knowledge of!
Maybe its because you spelled teacher wrong 😂😂😂 jk but your tone seems like your telling door kicker to go kick rocks...🤔 Correct me if I'm wrong.

Just wanted to second this. Currently in classes for info sec to transition from factory.
Same here. So tired of factory work. 11 years, time to do something better.

This video is amazingly helpful. I’m an Electrician that has always wanted to be part of the cyber security/ IT world. After 15+ plus years in the electrical world I’ve finally pulled the trigger and going to start schooling for cyber security.
I’m an electrician looking to do the same but I’ve only been doing electrical for 6 months
What sort of schooling are you going to do?
I’m a heating engineer for the past 11+ years and I'm doing the same.

This talk has given me so much hope for my future. I've been a landscaper running my own lawn business for the last 7 years of my life. I did it because it was the only good option for me as a high school drop out. I now see that this is a viable option for me so I'm going to drop my business and invest myself in this IT field all in.
A buddy of mine suggested we take a cyber security boot camp course at UIC after seeing remote positions on indeed starting at 70k. The program cost 12k. After a bit of research, I found a few free Cisco and CompTIA resources to save money. You just totally gave me inspiration, encouragement, and saved me 12k. I love finding cheap ways to get the skills I need to be successful. The advice about being Googled and commenting on blogs - priceless. Thank you! New subscriber here!

Thanks James. Im doing another one this year. NIST just asked me last week. Its going to be hot and fresh. stay tuned.
Gerald, you so professional, knowledgeable and very detail. Thank you and God bless you and give you more wisdom to continue to bless us with good information In Jesus Name Amen.
This video really helped me to narrow down the certs I need. Im currently going through a platform that basically is like a bootcamp for A+, Network +, and Security + as a cyber security track. I get a free voucher for each but wasnt sure which ones to focus on first.
No degree but I have college experience. No professional IT experience but I love tech, great communicator, I am a published author and everyone always remarks about how I should be a teacher. I love the cybersecurity field and would love to work more closely with the standards and policies sector and writing/creating /presenting material for companies for awareness training. From your video getting a background understanding of networking would help as a gateway into cybersecurity.
Im very excited as this video gave me some great clarification. The sector I want to go into is not something people really rave about.
what bootcamp did you do?
Very informative video! I am in a process of moving my career into cybersecurity. After 10 years in the US Air Force, as a mechanic, I am ready for another career.

knowing session, presentation and application layers help a security analyst, security engineer etc.. secure/protect applications from attacks! Not only network and transport layers because the data gets to transport layer in the form of segments and to Network layer in the form of packets from session, presentation and application layers

OHH MY GODD!!!! God bless you with a really happy and healthy life. Thank you so very very much for making this video.....!!!! @Gerald
Thank you for this video! Very helpful. I graduated during the pandemic with a degree in cyber security. I had a internship on the hook and it was canceled due to covid... I have not been able to find a job. No professor at college pushed us to get certs. No one talked about how important they are. I find this ridiculous. Its like going to school for a Professional Pilot degree and graduating with ZERO pilot certificates and trying to get a job as an airline pilot. Idk about other colleges but at least mine needs to focus on helping students get certs so they are more marketable when they graduate. It sucks how little college experience gets you and yet as a younger individual society pushes so hard for you to go get a degree.

Heck yeah! If you get a clearance and are open to different security roles, there is a lot of fisma, nist rmf, CMMC type audit roles to be had. It’s how I broke in so many years ago
Thank you so much for this video and great content. Thanks for all you do for the people getting into the cybersecurity field and those already in. It is very informative.
Thank you for this great inspiring and educative video. I have been searching for a clear, instructive, guiding and highly educative teaching on Cybersecurity since 2022. I will like to transition into I.T Audit/ Information Security Risk Management. Please kindly guide and mentor me sir.
This is great, I work at a Nuclear Power Plant doing physical security. I've had a Net+, Sec+ and a CySA+ for about a year and haven't gotten any cybersec interviews so I know about the job search struggle. a million thank you's for this extremely well done video! I'm struggling to get my foot in the door as an analyst and I have 2 degrees in cyber, 2 certs (ccna/sec+) and 10+ years in IT. still cant get an "entry level" security analyst job. its actually amazing to see that this is my case.
That is unusual. Resume refresh? Are you getting interviews or stopped by gatekeepers?
@@SimplyCyber yeah I refreshed it several times. I'm getting interviews rarely. in the past 2-3 years (covid probably had a hand in this too) I only got 3-4 interviews. one of which accused me of cheating on a test they gave me and said they got me on camera, and I politely asked if I may see the footage of me cheating (which I didn't do, I don't need to whatsoever.) awkwardly enough, they asked me back for a 2nd interview then denied me. the other interview went well but they only wanted someone who has been a sec. analyst. im in an interview process right now for the 3rd company and im praying every night that it works out.
@@SimplyCyber idk what else I need to do, but meanwhile I'm studying for my comptia cysa+, and I plan on doing the cissp after that (even though im only eligible for associate cissp (lol experience required to get a cert, brilliant.)
@@SimplyCyber I would be eternally grateful if you could look at my linked in, my resume and cert is posted there. maybe you can see if im doing something wrong? www.linkedin.com/in/navidn/
@@HouseJunk1e @N N Hi N N I took a look at your resume and it is good! Perhaps shorten it some to reflect the jobs you want and the newer skills you have. For example how Gerald mentions putting your prospective date to obtain a cert, that should be placed on there. In fact should be on the front. Take off any jobs not relevant with your current skill set and experience.
If you can, bring it to one page or two. Put PCI/DSS under your technical experience at the top of the page since that is a relatively new skill employers need. I hope you got that job! Have you ever thought about starting a blog or channel?
Doc, I am amazed with your RUclips videos. Anyway, I am not a Mastermind member. However, I wanted to let you know that the Cybersecurity community motivated me to get my Masters of Science on Cybersecurity. Before, I begin...many moons ago, I was an Electrical Engineer major and changed from Differential Equations (I like this course) to advanced writing (Investigative Journalism and Public Relations) and then joined the National Guard as Infantryman (MOS: 11B).... Anyhow, I got second Bachelor's in World History from the Army and my first 1 year of Masters in International Relations and Conflict Resolutions... As time passed, I got interested in Law Enforcement- Well, I became a State Trooper, and Military Veteran and got my Masters in Criminal Justice and now in Cybersecurity... Thus, I am intrigued and interested to become a Cybersecurity professional to protect people through private companies and/or by civil service... Also, I build gaming computers or PCs as a personal hobby... Gaming is a great hobby- well if time allows it due to family responsibilities... Therefore, Doc, what do you recommend for me to do? I like the idea of SOC Analyst and Pentester ( I like writing reports)... Please, advise, and let me know.. Thank you, and be safe out there. 😎🖖👍🤜🤛

I've lightly touched on security type testing in my career. 2 factor authentication for a bank, sql injection, hardware and software testing for touch terminals, RFID technology, DR, etc. I'll look at the resources you've provided and try out pen testing.
I think I might have just stumbled on the Holy Grail Tech Bible in how to get started in Cyber Security ⁉️‼️‼️
I will be listening to this a few more times.
Welcome! Glad you like it. My most popular video on channel
Jumping on Zwift and will watch this tonight. Applied for a Risk management technology position last night with no experience. Sounds relevant...
Awesome news. This talk will help, but since you are going risk management, may i suggest to beef up your ability to crush the interview, take a look at NIST CSF and get little familiar. Its getting a lot of adoption for cybersecurity frameworks which helps manage risk. It may help out if you casually speak to it like a boss in the interview. :-). Also I did a video only on GRC (which is the segment in cyber that risk management falls under) Recommend checking that out to give you some more ammunition -- ruclips.net/video/vKUtU4XmGn8/видео.html
Thank you for this information. I do have skills on MITRE & ATT, I understand defense in depth, and more, I do have Sec+, CEH, and splunk certificates and about a year of cyber sec apprenticeship but what I have realized is that not having a cousin or a friend in the cyber sec. industry it's almost impossible to get a job . My certs are about to expire without getting any cyber sec job.
Regret to hear you have all the skills and pre req and still haven’t broke through and think it’s a spoils system. I assure you there is some of that but it’s about 5% and not nearly the norm. Have you tried engaging folks in industry and build a network? I find half of jobs are from who you know not who you are related to. Not a fair field but more accessible than birth right
@@SimplyCyber The only way I engage w/ folks is through LinkedIn, some recruiters (about 15) can view my profile on a weekly basis but still don't contact me.
@@patm8251 I’d encourage conference/ discord engagement. Networking is huge. Send me a note on LinkedIn. I’ll invite you to a few discord w cybersecurity pros. It’s shop
Talk including opportunities.
@@SimplyCyber would it be possible to also the invited to some discord servers?

Appreciate the kind words. Glad this content helped.
Incredibly happy and grateful for your time and information you provided in the above video. Thank you
My pleasure!
Great video! This has helped me decide which certifications I want to get.
The world's best teacher
planning to do masters in cybersecurity thank you for these valuable informations.
Crush it! Best wishes.
I am sorry if my questions is too much personal. Do you have undergrad in CS/IT? I am holding B.Eng in EEE, and keen to get Msc in Cybersecurity as well.
Thanks so much Gerald for the information! Very helpful
Hi Gerald this gives me huge confidence thank you so much. I just enrolled into the Bachelors of Cyber Security and being a completely non computer based literacy background apart from checking emails and usual internet browsing this out my mind to ease that I don't need to learn C program and all those scripts. Which I have been doing online tutorials and been trying really really hard to wrap my head around those programs to make my education easier. Would you have any tips in regards apart from this excellent video. Thanx mate
I’m currently in the AF active duty and am about so start NJTI cyber security bootcamp next month. It’s 17,500 dollars and sadly my GI bill won’t cover it but I’m hoping this is the right path I should take.
How’s the boot camp so far???
There is a lot of value here. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Please post a video on 'managing IAM Projects', in perspective of a 'Cybersecurity/IAM Project Manager'.
Just subscribed. Thanks for the excellent content.
I was listening to this on my drive home last night and just wanted to say that this was THE MOST informative video I've watched, so much helpful information packed in here. Thank you so much for this! Where do we find the PowerPoint for this?
Here you go: drive.google.com/file/d/11NraVSkbb3d8_MMO6rxy4EjI8o9j_wOC/view
Thanks for the kind words. Loved making that video.
Your good, good for you., Your great 👍
Great work @Gerald!
However, I request you to upload your videos in 1080p or higher, so that the slides part can be easily read.
Hmm. I'll try, but I think there are limitations on the platform. I put a link to my slides in the show description. You can pull them there and look at them locally on your workstation. Hopefully that helps.
@@SimplyCyber Thanks for replying so quickly. I got your point about the platform limitations. Besides, I want to thank you for providing such an excellent content.
I’m currently in law enforcement and have been for 12 years, but would love to get out. This Cyber Security field sounds fruitful. Is there any carry over from my current experience into Cyber Security? Gonna watch your video now.
There is carry over-- Pour a cup of this and have sip: ruclips.net/video/SH3GGysk6GQ/видео.html
@@SimplyCyber Oh, wow! You read my mind. Thanks man!
Absolutely. You are going to be putting handcuffs 👮🏻♂️ on and arresting 🚔 malware. Lol 😂 😂
Excellent video! Also, really appreciate the time stamps and links!
Awesome Feltlife. Appreciate the kind words and taking time to let me know. Cheers!
Awesome as always - thanks Jerry!
I am interested in Digital Forensics, I have a Bachelor's in Cyber Security- Digital Forensics. I start my Masters in Criminal Justice - Cybercrime in few months. I am learning X-Ways Forensics on my own, and eventually I will learn Encase and FTK.
You are ready to rock!
Great information, thank you so much for your videos!
Wow I’m so thankful for stumbling into this video!!!
Welcome to the party!
@@SimplyCyber i do have a quick question: I’m coming from a marketing background (Seo digital marketing to be specific) and was looking to find out how I could leverage that in cybersecurity. I’m currently doing my masters in cybersecurity & haven’t taken any certification exams yet, but plan to take security plus this summer for starters. I would like to work smarter! Thanks so much again for such valuable content seriously!
@@Princessfaith_ just saw your comment and just subscribed to channel.... What certs are you looking to get? If CCNA or Cisco Cyber ops, I have a boot camp that I did in a week that helped me to earn both
@@b.m.robertson5959 can you email it to me please ? Ijeenn350@gmail.com I’m actually looking to getting my comptia security + but need to find a job to get through the door while I’m preparing to take the security plus exam.
This was extremely helpful thank you. I am fresh into Cyber Security, don’t even have any certificates yet. Buddy mine is helping me practice for the security plus, but it seems that a lot of the book is under the assumption that you have prior knowledge as in different terms and lingo. It’s not very beginner friendly. What would you recommend I start to help me learn some of the fundamentals
