Thanks Mr. Auger! I just started watching your cyber briefs last week too. I'm a 53 yr old just starting a new adventure in cyber from real estate most of my life. Working on my sec+ now. What is the tone for employers looking to hire people in thier 50's? Love this community, so giving compare to other industries i've been part of.
AGEISM exits everywhere, including CyberSecurity.. but CyberSecurity is raging hot right now and there is a dearth of people in the field so you have that going for you. Since you come from real estate, your customer service skills should exceed those of your peers so that's in your favor. If going the self taught role, lack of experience is against you, so that's why regardless of age, you need to sell them on your love of tech and people. So in addition to your Security+ build a home lab, this will not only give you hands on experience, but also talking points in the interview as well as demonstratin ur love of tech. Look into PFSense and set it up at home, best of luck with all of it. And remember, I was over age 40, no tech degree, zero certs, unemployed for 2yrs(stay at home dad) heard CyberSecurity was hot, studied for 2 months and got my Security+. The rest was history, got a cake of a job making real nice $$$ now. Honestly tho, and confirmed by my hiring manager, what got me the gig was my gift of gab and how I showed how much Ioved technology thru out the interview. And best believe I'm not anything close to being a tech Nerd, but CyberSecurity always intrigued me.
It’s all about attitude, initiative, and delivery. Age, bg, location are varied, if you can contribute to solutions and are someone folks want to work w/ you got it.
You got it! A friend of mine changed career at age 48. Worked entry level jobs and eventually was offered a remote work opportunity from a local bank as a cyber security specialist in his early 50s. He’s still going and loving it. Don’t mention age and don’t let anyone discriminate against you because of it.
Just found your channel tonight. Yesterday, I started a new position at a school district, as an IT tech and was literally just talking to my Boss today, about how I heard how many open positions still havent been filled in the industry. Anyway, regarding Cyber Security, I just started the Google Cyber Security Profesional cert. I hope it goes well!
Thank you for this video Dr. Auger, I am considering a major career move, and this video is right on! I agree 100% with everything you said. I also just signed up at the Simply Cyber website. All the best!!
Yes please do a video on how you approach your boss (or executive) on requesting training to help your career and help their efforts in the company/business
I work in regular security and looking to break into cyber security. Can you point me in theoretical direction. I really want to make an immense impact in the field! Oh and your video is amazing I’ll never forget it!
Question: I have no certs. However, I have been a fan of CTF'S game modify websites for years. How would someone like me use these skills to amplify the current knowledge?
The hardest one is the way in from an other job. I still trying to find out in my country how. And i found a company which looks like does the teaching because they need more people so they say we talk people from other branches and educate them.
Aviation has also a shortage but as a aircraft maintenance engineer/technician(Easa B1.1) you earn bad money for the responability still even there is not enough peps in europe...
Can we get that video for your path to CISO? What positions best prepared you for the role? What positions (that you may not have worked) would also benefit? Is it more MBA focused or tech focused? What was your day to day like? Thanks!
Yes Please! Awaiting that video, I love management positions but the every few years certification exams like CISO and CISSP/CISM types scare me to take this path. Your a ray of hope please help @gerald Auger sir
Thanks for the great motivating intro! Within the cyber security, what's more demanding and bigger scope like networking, surety, client, knowledge operation?
Just wrote this to answer that question. (I wrote it last week but literally get question enough that I took time and wrote this. Cheers! SimplyCyber.io/book
also i think that 3.4 is kinda of scewed because a ton of those are developer jobs that fall under software engineering jobs open in my opinion but maybe that just shows how big cyber is idk, what do you think gerald?
Thanks for making these videos! I find them to be extremely helpful. I just finished a cybersecurity bootcamp and currently going through the interview process for a remote help desk position at a msp/csp any recommendations that will help me land the job and finally get my foot in the door? I've put out at least 50 applications. I hear tech jobs are in high demand but it sure doesn't feel like it as a newbie breaking into the field. 😆 Thanks
It's a numbers game. You may need 500 applications. The more you apply, the greater the odds and offers you'll get. MSPs are awesome, if they have an InfoSec dept you can pivot to. Do you have Sec+? That's a good cert to start with.
There's this horrible situation (2023) where experienced "journey-practitioners" are highly prized, but 3 million job positions are open, and we definitely observe that it is very hard today for entry-level people to land their first job. The real challenge/difficulty today is "how to get that first cyber job" without "five years of previous experience in IT operations". A new mindset is just starting to emerge that believes, "we can hire people who have drive and passion and a hunger to learn and to perform, and we can teach the new necessary skills to those ambitious and motivated people" but from my position I don't see many companies actually offering on-the-job training. So right now there is a Catch-22 situation that "companies will pay $$$ for experienced cyber people" but many people want to start their FIRST job and they don't have official paid experience, but apparently very few companies want to invest the time effort and $ expense into providing that necessary training.
I have been considering learning cyber security for a while now. However, I also have big interest in full stack development too. So ideally I am wondering if there is a position where I could do both?
DevSecOps is a whole area of focus. Also AppSec is a whole area. Plus if you want to go offensive you could be a web app pentester. There’s a few area to explore
Gerald, this is my first time viewing your channel. I am very interested in pursuing a career change into Cyber Security. What are the best learning platforms available without attending a ridiculously priced college?
There is a ton of free information out there. If you want to save some time and pay a fair price, ITPro is pretty awesome. Thats why I'm affiliated with them. go.itpro.tv/simplycyber is the link and code SIMPLYCYBER30 gets you 30% 1st month/year. The content there is pretty deep and wide, and practice exams and labs and stuff. Again take adv of all the free stuff, but if you're short on time or its a valuable asset the ITPro is a reasonbly priced option to save you time.
Hello I’m currently serving in the Air Force and I’m getting my bachelors degree in computer science Cyber security! Any tips on what I should be focusing on in to secure a job after my contract is up? Thank you.
does this role require huge time interacting with team? i plan to study cyber sec in Germany and work there but the language is a bit difficult for me. i was hoping that doing cyber sec can be internationally flexible in english
Hi Gerald, I can't seem to find the "Simply Cyber" server on discord. Is it still available on there? Could I just get a direct link to join if so? Thank you!
I'm going to start an internship in cyber threat intelligence and that's my first job experience after master degree, do you have any advice regarding path/focus/ skills ecc?
Excellent video, sub'd, what advice would you give to someone looking to break into cyber, one who has knowledge and some practice on CTF challenges but with no formal education in the field? Great content btw.
Hey Gerald. Any suggestion to a guy(its me lol) switching from digital marketing? How to face questions asked regarding my previous roles explaining to interviewers?
Omg! Digital marketing…so you’re able to effectively communicate to convey complicated messaging in a behavior adjusting result??? Sounds like grc information security awareness pro. Check out grc and highlight your strengths!!!
Hello sir, was just curious on your personal opinion on WGU, and if you have any experience working with their Grads. I’m sure you know they promise to make you a ready and able cyber sec professional, but I was just wondering if that claim holds any weight. If this topic is completely out of your ballpark no worry’s, and have a wonderful day!
Haven’t evaluated it personally. Check out Nicole eassence on RUclips (last name might be misspelled, but add cyber to query and you’ll find her) she did videos on why and Josh makador on RUclips also has done vids. I’ve messaged w both and they are both outstanding folks.
Im looking for a remote cybersecurity internship. I have applied but without luck yet. I took my resume to a professiona already. I have 99 Any tips? Thank you
I'm interested in getting my feet wet in cyber security, but I suck at maths and statistics. What's more, on TV they show us guys who think to the second while I do... you can imagine😅. All this makes me doubt whether I'll be able to keep up with this adventure.
I got my CCNA and am now working with a tier 1 global ISP in the NOC. I'm considering a specialization and kind of unsure. I think i have strong networking fundamentals, and not sure if going further there will be a great ROI since things are becoming more gui based with SDN and other new tech. Though i do think it would be smart to at least go CCNP. I'm kind of stuck between cloud or security for specializing my skillset. Thoughts?
security isnt going anywhere. cloud isnt' going anywhere. you'll be good either route. i love cyber so id go that route but you cant go wrong financially.
I'm 50 yrs old and thinking about studying and maybe one day get into cyber security and I really don't know anything about computers, except owning computers since 2007. Am I just kidding myself, thinking I could study and eventually get a job in that area? I'd say I'd be 53 once qualified.
no. there are millions of cyber jobs that do not require python. many people say that python skills can help and assist in many cyber roles, but also there are literally millions of cyber jobs that never use python at all.
So, to me, cyber security sounds awesome. Protecting networks and people from hackers and crime. Sign me up. Problem is that I can't get a good picture of what a day in the life is really like. Is it just coding and being in meetings all day? Idk if I'm interested in what cyber security really is or if I'm just interested in an idea in my head. I try to watch day in the life videos and most of it is wasted time of showing them getting ready for work and then they have to edit out their actual work. Another thing is that I don't want to but a medium to large financial commitment and have this not be for me. Right now it's just a fantasy in my head.
this cert (Sec+) is one of many potential boosts. that is one path but there are dozens of other viable paths that have worked for many people. Dept of Defense loves Sec+ certification but tons of other cyber jobs don't require Sec+. (and there have been thousands of cases where Sec+ provided no boost at all and Sec+ holders did not receive the job offer). it is not the case that "holding Security+ certification guarantees you a job," that concept is not true in any way.
Not with right attitude and initiative. It’s about delivering on work then age. I don’t care if ur 80, if you can assess the risk, or monitor and respond to the siem (and want to) them plz get in here. Value is in execution, not age

it is illegal for a company to ask you what your age is during an interview, so definitely don't volunteer that information.

As someone who is also in their mid 50's, I just hasn't been a problem, but at this point I do have 7 years of IT experience I can point at.

Question ❓ how relevant is certification in cyber security or cloud certification to the industry?
What u think about AI affecting the job market

Can you rephrase? Understanding IT networking is pretty valuable
AWSOME content as usual, thanks!

Will AI and chatbots make it harder to get in cyber in the future. Will the industry shrink in 10 years like others may?
