Something special about someone who sings, writes, arranges etc for many instruments. Gino Vanelli is born and raised in Montreal and was extremely popular worldwide about thirty years beginning in the 1970s. Many great well crafted songs and stylish, jazzy albums.

Man Gino was the bomb, never duplicated. His brother played keys and did the arrangements. Favs,. Mama Coco, Love me now, where am I going, Getting High. They were beyond cool. I finally got to see the about 4 years ago, his voice still sound great. They used to play the disco clubs in Chicago when I was a teen. Great band.

Gino is the best EVER!!! Back in the 70s he had serious fan followings in Detroit, Chicago, and New Orleans. His music was so good, salespeople used it to demonstrate stereo speakers. He's 71 now, and his voice is still as strong as ever; touring in the US this fall❤

So cool to see you discovering Gino Vannelli. I've loved his records since this came out and he's still making good music. His music is not nearly as well known as it should it be. I believe his career suffered from an image problem and he was never considered cool. I'll be here if you do any more reactions . I would suggest the songs 'Love Of My Life', 'Powerful People' or maybe 'Love Me Now' to try. Thanks as always for the video.

The title cut from the album Powerful People has some very moving lyrics and is worth a listen. I was lucky enough to see this Canadian of Italian extraction perform during Mardi Gras sometime in the 70s. That same show had Wild Cherry and they played that funky music so it was a blast.

Gino Vanelli is from Montreal, my home town, home town of Leonard Cohen and William Shatner. I once worked with a Guatemalan woman, in Los Angeles, who instantly brightened up one day, when my MP3 player randomly played one of Gino's hits from the 1970s. She and all her girl friends in Guatemala had big crushes on Gino, when they were teenagers. The guy's fame has no geographical border limitations!
Since the 1990s, Vanelli has been a professional Opera singer/actor, apparently getting high critical praise.

So if you don't know Gino Vannelli Immerse yourself in the album Storm At Sunup (released in 1975) with the title track, followed by "Love Me Now", then continue with "Mama Coco" and so on ... A real gem ! The peculiarity of Gino Vannelli's early albums was marked by this unique smooth synth-bass sound which replaced the electric bass.

I've known about Gino since the late 70s but just started listening to his albums last year after seeing his Live in LA concert on YT. I found a used copy of the BGO 2-fer CD reissue of Powerful People/Storm At Sunup at my local store last spring. These two albums blew my mind! Great songs, arrangements, musicianship and record production. And Gino is such a charismatic vocalist with an incredible voice. He was in his early 20s when he recorded these albums which is just amazing to contemplate. I love the great keyboard playing, and both albums feature Graham Lear on drums who was Santana's drummer on classic albums like Moonflower. Also check out his Brother To Brother, and Nightwalker albums. Great stuff! And Gino is still active at age 69. His latest album is entitled, Wilderness Road. But I'd suggest watching the LA concert. He assembled a great band and he's in good voice.

For more Gino with both a fusion and prog flavour try the 18 minute The War Suite, the title track form Brother to Brother both from the 70's and Shape Me Like a Man and King for a Day from the 80's. For Gino with a more laid back R&B ballad sound try I Just Wanna Stop one of his biggest hits from the 70's and Just A Motion Away and Wild Horses two of his biggest hits from the 80's.

Gino and his brother Joe on keybords, was excellent. He had a slew of great tunes. I saw him in Jacksonville Fl, I can't remember the year, but it was one of the best sounding concerts I ever went to. It was just superb, the sound system, the band, everything was on point. I also had a good looking date for the show, which didn't hurt.

Don't know if you ever listened to Gino again, but I'm adding my two cents. Gino Vannelli is one of the most talented male vocalists in pop history. He had several "periods", jumping genres for most of the 70's and 80's but always with a signature sound. His jazz-rock record Brother to Brother is really interesting even today, and the title song of that record is a sonic masterpiece. However, there always was a tension between Gino the serious musician (trading session players with the likes of Frank Zappa, who parodied him in one song in Sheik Yerbouti), and Gino the handsome baladeer, who also for some reason liked to dance while singing live (I mean like, choreography!). I once saw a concert video from the Brother to Brother years, where they're playing all this complicated songs with jazzy overtones, but at the same time Gino is singing and dancing with his shirt open to his bellybutton (showing a chest full of hair), very Italian fashion, and the first rows are full of girls adoring him 🤣 So be warned, it's an acquired taste, even a guilty one. But he's totally worth it! Great channel, cheers from Argentina.

Great choice. May I suggest 'Son Of A New Your Gun/Jack Miraculous' and 'Powerful People' from the same album and 'New Fix For '76', from Gino's 1976 release 'The Gist Of The Gemini'. Gino's music was unique, to hip and advanced for its own (commercial) good...Paradoxically old and new - before 1978 all his music utilised keyboard bass instead of electric bass guitar, in such way both paying homage to 1960 Soul Jazz Organ Trio music and at the same time paving the way to the musical aesthetics of 1980s keyboard based, keyboard bass driven 'techno pop'. But it was such a mixture, R&B, Pop, Rock, Progressive, Funky, Jazzy and w/ Gino's vocals which often borrowed from both Broadway Musical and Opera. Too damn eclectic! Too hip for its own good...

Zappa let his butchering drummer get a new contract with Vanelli in 1980.
Frank apparently decided Colaiuta wasn't worth the salary!
Joining Vanelli made it even more nonsensical. Vanelli certainly didn't need an array of irritating multiplex time altering polyrhythms, breaking your concentration, for this style of music. I bet before each performance, Vanelli had to pour a ton of fabric softener on Colaiutas head before each concert.
