Michelle’s 3flip in both the short and long programs were picture perfect. If she only landed that jump so perfectly at the Olympics.
Even she fell at the 2002 Olympics, her performance still worth to WOW.
Michelle's grace, confidence, posture and how she is so tuned in to her music makes her the very best skater in American history. I have missed her perfection and love for the ice. No one will ever be her equal.
Peggy's description of Sasha Cohen fit her entire career so well: "She can run hot or cold. She can be breathtaking or she can self-destruct."
I remember this program; I was 14 years old at the time and recorded it ALL! I still have it on VHS till this day..
Michelle going into an Olympic season without a coach was the worst idea ever.
Yes, that was a colossal mistake. I never bought the explanation that it was Michelle's idea at all. IMO (without proof) it was Danny Kwan's decision for Michelle to drop FC and "coach herself". Danny believed that Michelle would've cemented her legendary status by winning the gold medal "coachless" and was arrogant enough to believe that she could have done so ...with Danny serving unofficially as her coach. Notice that after SLC, Danny stayed away from Michelle at competitions - He knew that he ruined her Olympic chance.
Michelle's second big mistake was to not ask anyone from USFSA to monitor her skating and give her feedbacks heading into the Olympics. (Sarah Hughes had feedback after Nationals to change the ending of her LP, and it helped Sarah's overall performance in SLC tremendously.)
The third mistake was to drop Lori Nichol and then to dumb down the LP that Sarah Kawarah gave her. She stripped out most of the Kawahara's choreography by Nationals, and the LP became mostly just crossovers and jumps; It only came alive at the last 20 seconds or so.
The fourth mistake was to repeat her masterpiece SP from 1998, thinking that she could re-produce the same magic. The magic was not there in her SP performance in 2002.
3A4T 10 Every single one of your points is correct.
@@AT-jm4dl Thanks for the explanation as to why Kwan made the insane decision to leave Frank Carroll. I never bought her pre-packaged response for the media. The change was SO abrupt and made NO sense.
I believe her 5th mistake in Salt Lake was to NOT do a triple-triple combination. Had Michelle skated clean in Salt Lake and included a triple toe loop - triple toe loop combo (which she did at 2001 Worlds less than a year earlier)...even though that combination is easier than either of Sarah's triple-triples, I still believe the judges would have given Michelle the gold, especially since her presentation was superior to Sarah's.
I believe she lost the '98 gold for the same reason. Regardless of Lipinski's more difficult triple-triple, if Michelle had performed an easier one in Nagano, I believe she would have won gold there. I always say she lost the Nagano gold by one revolution. She decided to skate safe and expected her reputation and artistry to make up for the lack of technical difficulty, but there wasn't enough distance between her and Lipinski artistically that Michelle could afford to pull back technically and yet,. that's what she did. She skated safe and lost. When a skater skates safe, they don't usually win.
I believed she was coached by someone else prior to what you think her father having to do with the decision. Have you examined her other videos before she wax injured? Whatever her father’s decision in deciding what is best for his daughter is determined by her future career if she’s completely capable in controlling her own destiny
@@L1623VP Michelle did a great job in 1998 Olympics . She didn't play safe. Even Tara had 3+3 to win , Michelle still very closed .If Tara hadn't 3+3, Michelle would win. Many people thought Tara didn't have a correct 3+3, in the case Michelle should be the winner.
1:33:33 Right when Michelle comes off the ice you can see Frank Caroll look over at her and her father embrace. It is sad because that was the moment he used to greet her when she finished her performances! Sad to see him look on . . .1:33:36

I watch the posture of the ladies here and wish so much that most of today's ladies had it. The hunched shoulders and hike into the jumps not only kill the aesthetic but hurts them physically.
I agree. I no longer watch injured little girls’ figure skating. The cheating on jumps, mass production of robotic skaters, etc., no longer interest me.

Those who made anti Semitic statement against Sarah Hughes failed to note that she and her siblings do.not observe Judaism, and the same with most media negative portrayal of Sarah Hughes. Even if Sarah’s mother, Amy married to John Hughes, she doesn’t practice Judaism, and neither do the entire Hughes family. You could see the Hughes family celebrating Christmas together!
There is no reason to defend or justify antisemitism. People’s backgrounds and beliefs should not be anyone else’s business.
😍Sasha Cohen!
Grande michelle kwan
How did Hughes not get 2nd overall for this performance? Sasha was wonderful but with her 6 triples (some of them imperfectly landed) to Sarah's 7 smoothly landed triples, I'm not sure how Sasha's strengths on other elements were that much better than Hughes' strengths. Equal on the spins, yes better for Sasha on the spirals and footwork but not dramatically so. I would say 5.8/5.8 for Hughes and 5.6/5.9 for Cohen.
“.. while others lament...”
*cut to Sasha*
lol how rude
Think Sarah underscored in SP/LP recall telling sister I saw article where reporter said Kwan had titanic talent but after Hughes skated felt she would be Michelle's iceberg & 3wk later SH won much deserved OGM, as for Sasha still think she's greatest skater who never was but Angela brought beauty, grace & artistry to sport that would forever be chgd in SLC when judging was finally exposed for it's well known politics
Sarah was never going to really challenge Michelle on the artistic mark in the way that Sasha could. She also skated a bit slowly. In the end it was Sarah’s consistency that got her that gold medal as Kwan, Cohen, and Irina all had major mistakes at the olympics. Sarah couldn’t really beat those three, but she was always there waiting in case one of them made a mistake.
After Sarah Hughes performance, Angela nikodinov leaves.
Michelle kwan is in the spotlight.
She was always destined for the spotlight ever since she burst on to the scene as a tiny 12 years old in her first senior Nationals in 1993, and for the next decade and a half she dominated the sport like no other, hell for 12 years she was the sport.
It is ironic MK would skate to this music that Lysacek won gold.
Why ironic?
Ironic? He won gold and she didn't! So?🤔🤔

If Michelle had done this conservative performance in the long at the Olympics she would've won.
What?😂😂😂
@@waynehentley4332 I not going to argue with you Qweens. Y'all sissies always wanna tussle.
@@waynehentley4332 It might be true. All she needed to do was defeat Slutskaya, who had a flawed and uninspired performance. She didn’t need to beat Sarah Hughes, since Michelle was in first place and Sarah in fourth after the short program.
So many wrong decisions were made my MK and her team for the 01-02 Olympic season. One of Michelle's wrong decisions was to repeat this SP from 1998. Everyone knows that you can't duplicate a magical performance. Why did she think that she could recreate the magic from 1998 four years later with the sam program was head scratching. Danny Kwan had no business being her coach.
I'm not sure I understand. She won the short program at '02 Nationals and Olympics with her masterpiece Rachmaninoff program, and her short program merited 3rd at Worlds with a major mistake in the program. I have watched the '98 and '02 performances several times and not noticed any decline in the quality of the program. Indeed, to the contrary, a better layback spin in her '02 version and a more difficult third spiral position (the catch-foot to the side rather than behind her).
@@Dylvente Remember that skating is a judged sport. A skater's placement could be do to reputation and/or favoritism also. Both the National and the Olympic judges were generous to MK in 02. I was a fan of MK and was rooting for her, but I thought Sasha's SP outshined MK's at both Nationals and SLC. At the Olympic, Michelle clearly slipped on the toe-pick when picking in for the flip and possibly under-rotated the jump when she landed; It was a miracle that she didn't fall in the SP. There was a strong argument for MK's SP to be placed behind either Irina's or Sasha's. The Olympic judges clearly wanted MK to win the gold medal at SLC, but she had an uncharacteristically poor LP (two jump mistakes, slow skating, deer in the headlights). Coupled that poor performance with Sarah's exceptional skate and the Pair judging scandal, and the judges were left with no choice but to judge the ladies's LP more or less accordingly.
@@3l3llala13 All true, I was just responding to the comment that criticized her decision to use this program again. The performance of the program had technical problems at Olympics and probably should have been 2nd or 3rd but her 3rd place finish at the end was not generous (it was fair, though I think Slutskaya was lucky to be awarded 2nd in the long).
My heart aches for Michelle Kwan.
@ D H I know, but her goal in life was to be an Olympic Champion. She dedicated her life to winning and I remember the look on her father’s face when the line of 5.8 came up for Technical Merit. “Lyra Angelica” was her signature FS, and I know that she appeared on the talk program the next morning and said that she was honored to be representing the USA. Tara Lipinski and Sarah Hughes got the golds the two times that Michelle competed in the Olympics.
@@sandih29687 sanding, her overall achievement have surpassed the Olympic gold, she has become bigger than the Olympic, the most beautiful not to mention the decorated skater in history.
Why?
@@waynehentley4332 Because Michelle didn't get the Olympics gold that she totally deserved. At 1998 Tara won with a incorrect 3+3, Michelle was robbed. At 2002 Michelle fell unfortunately, and Sarah just did a good job to win.

I would have given this to Sasha over Michelle. I think Sasha sold the program better, was more spirited, and had a better vehicle overall than Michelle had in Scheherazade, which is quite the generic program. I would have had Nikodinov in sixth, easily, at 5.2/5.4. Not invested in the program at all, very stiff, lots of mistakes, and none of the fire of Ann Patrice and Jenny. Sarah’s team was very smart in redoing the free program for the games, though I do miss the second lutz and the spiral entry into the loop.
Sasha with all the splats at the end of the program. No.
Sasha skated very well but with her flutzes and the hand down at the end, the judges had to put her second to Michelle, who skated flawlessly.
Jose Hill Sasha didn’t have any splats here. What were you watching?
Once Angela fell on her 3L, she obviously gave up!!😢😢
@@jjh2456All the splats? Look again!
Sarah should have been first after the short program. Sorry judges, Michelle and Sasha and Angela also flutz.
vistaprime Michelle did not flutz. That was a very solid outside edge.
No way, not with Sarah’s underrotations.
Also, I don’t know what you were watching, but Angela didn’t have a flutz. She stayed on the outside edge during takeoff. In fact, it’s a pretty clear outside edge. More clear than Michelle’s.
Sarah had an egregious flutz. So did Sasha. The placements here were correct.
sasha did two 3f's in her short, isn't that illegal?

GRomance0804 Michelle was NOT overhyped. She won Worlds five times and skated clean, if tentative, programs at the 1998 Olympics. She just got unlucky that Tara skated out of her boots and landed two triple-triple combos in her lp.
Michelle skated two clean programs in 1998. The result there is still controversial.
