Yo it’s ok... also I’m very excited for a lot more content!
Can't wait!
Oh honey… 300 is on the low end. People have paid that for switches or keycaps alone, mainly hard to find switches like Brown Alps. Neon Green Alps sell for about 10 dollars a switch, if you can even find one.
The space bar sounds kinda hollow and tinny. Maybe adding some kind of sound deadening material stuck to the inside of the key may improve that. Rest of the keys sound good.
Hey Quinn, I noticed the additional video clips. Those do make a difference in the narrative. StoryBlocks?
Unlubed stabs? The agony!
You know what, as far as videos about first builds go, Snaz here actually did probably the best job I've seen.
Switches aren't lubed either :( Still an awesome build though!
@@MrMichaeldwatson You don't want to lube boxes in the first place, really. Considering they let dust pass in and out and lubricating doesn't provide much of a benefit for the BOX line specifically. Even then asking anyone to lube switches on their first try isn't exactly advisable since it can take up to four minutes per switch to lube, assuming you didn't ruin any switches' keyfeel.
I'd say for even 99% of mech enthusiasts, asking them to lube their own switches is asking too much for the marginal benefit it provides.
Koriko I’ve lubed box switches. Thicker lubes like 3204 or 205g0 work great, cause they won’t drip down like a thinner lube such as 1514 or something.
@@Kori-ko I lubed my box whites actually. I found it much nicer afterwards. Perhaps that's just me though.

"And RGB LED backlight! Which I won't use cause I am not 12"
*continues to spend more time to coil the cable only for looks*
You missing the point completly. The whole RGB thing is something wich attracts younger people - thats why he said ''I am not 12''. Has nothing to do with caring about how something looks in general. Its just like some stuff looks childish due to mostly childs are attracted to it and therefore use it.
Coiling a cable is some kind of looks that attracts usually a more mature audience - there for its not childish.
However, ofc there are children wich dont like RGB and matures which do. But if you call something childish its all about statics. And statisicly hes totaly corret.
Sidenote: RGB will decrease performance of hardware by 10% and without irony is a waste of energy even though not much.
Dynamic Dissonance coiling cables isn’t sophisticated and grown up. Get over yourself. Solid color underglows can really make a retro build like Miami or pulse and also look great on accented sets. Not to mention backlighting, which is quite practical for indicating things like which QMK layer you are on.

I would be awfully careful about invoking the survivorship bias here as you did, it might be out of scope. Manufacturing, business, and economics have evolved greatly within the 70 years of your grandmother's fridge. The context has evolved greatly. The best invocations of the survivorship bias tend to be when evaluating situations within a limited scope ( the aeroplane armor example from the 'you are not so smart' podcast, or Michael Shermer's Steve Job's example ) . I've been diving down the mechanical keyboard rabbit hole for a few years now and while I still like Cherry MX blue switches, honestly Razer's goofy "opto-mechanical" switches on the Huntsman and Huntsman Elite keyboards have stolen my heart. They're everything I like about Cherry MX blues (tactile, clicky) but lighter actuation force, and their actuation/reset point is both the same and higher up than Cherry switches so you don't have to press the keys down as far to type. As a touch-typist this has made a world of difference in speed and accuracy, as well as eliminating the fatigue that sometimes happens after long typing sessions on my MX blue keyboards.
That all being said - the one membrane keyboard thing I miss is the shape and layout of the Microsoft Ergo 4000. It is perfect with the front plastic riser thingy, but I found the comfort of mechanical switches outweighed the superior wrist positioning for me. If someone would make literally that exact keyboard but with these Razer laser switches, they could have all my moneys. All of them.

Awesome video. Might build my own after this
Coming from someone who does not currently own a custom keyboard, but is looking into building one, i don't think $300 is too bad for a nice keyboard. More expensive prebuilt gaming keyboard are already getting dangerously close to that price point, and they aren't really anything special. Some dedicated media keys, a whole lot of RGB and maybe some extra macro keys, but otherwise just bog standard mx-cheapo switches, cheap keycaps and plastic cases. $300 for a keyboard that is built to my preference and with more premium components is pretty reasonable, especially since it's upgradable and user serviceable.
DIY keyboards can cost few lower than 100 bux even if you chose cheaper PCB, plate, case, switches and keycaps.
Edit: Very bad switch choice.
spacebar sucks
As someone who is in the mech community, I really thought this was a guide on you to build one for ONLY $300, because that’s actually relatively cheap for a mech board. I’m planning on building a ‘cheap’ $400 board soon
i just died because of that disgusting rattle and horrific switches and stabilizers. PLEASE LUBE NEXT TIME!!!!!!!!!!
I think I'll stick with my 50$ chinese mx red keyboard after hearing how those sound
just a little lube and bandaid on the stabilisers and he's on the clear. he said in a comment that the lube was still on hold by the customs
@@dgpsf yes, the idea is to dampen the clack into a smooth thock when the stab is depressed all the way down. you put something thin and soft like a bandaid or electrical tape between the stabs and the pcb, then trim it so it's hidden
you can get different quieter switches
Definitely not for everyone,,...
Mechanical keyboards and the community around are pretty comparable to audiophiles.
Good job on your first built, but I highly recommend you to lube the switches and especially the stabilizers. Also you should definitely clip the stabs to reduce the noise which will reduce the rattle and make your keyboard sound better. And putting some foam under the PCB can reduce some the the annoying reverb. O rings might be an option but some people don't like them as they make the keyboard a little less sharp feeling.
As always great job and great information..snazzy
that might be the worst sounding keyboard i think i've ever heard jfc

BTW, your stabilizer are terrible
If I ever had to work in an open plan office with a keyboard enthusiast I would go full office space on that thing. Seriously, it's a good thing you work on your own because that keyboard would drive anyone else nuts!
The mechanical keyboard rabbit hole goes fucking DEEP. I've only had one, a fullsize cheap chinese board with Gateron browns that I've been happy with for the last 2 years, but after sampling various MX- and Alps-style switches in search of greater tactility, my research for a new build now has me part sourcing for a handwired build with a custom layout (60% with a numpad and arrow keys)
I think a lot of the appeal, certainly in my case, is the fact that making a keyboard gives it that personal touch. My brother keeps telling me to just buy a Model M, or an old Alps keyboard, or their modern Unicomp or Matias descendants. But I want to make a keyboard I can really call my own. Plus I kinda enjoy building and tinkering with things to begin with. I was a Lego kid, I've done several console mods from the ever-popular Game Boy Advance AGB-101 mod to performing the difficult UltraHDMI mod for N64 myself, I did many repair jobs on my first car from simple oil changes and battery replacements to starter, suspension, and engine mount replacements. And of course I enjoy building and upfrading PCs, and I built my own computer desk. This hands-on sort of thing is just very satisfying, y'know? And especially for something like this, where you get to enjoy the results on a daily basis. That's where the appeal of the mechanical keyboard meme lies for me. If it was all about prebuilt keyboard and there wasn't such a robust custom market and community, I would give less than a shit, really.
Yeah but desktop keyboards without a numeric keypad are pointless IMO. Makes video editing a nightmare.
I never use numpad. Plus, full-size keyboard hurt my back. Lol
Say hello to the El Gato stream deck! 👍
There's not even F or arrow keys lol
@@snazzy how does having the number pad cause backpain?
@@skatcat743 Kinda grasping at straws but one plausible explanation is that the added width of a full-size keyboard makes him have to spread his hands out farther causing his shoulders to be at a weird angle which gives him back pain when he sits like that for several hours each day. Awesome vid! Been part of the keyboard community for a bit now, super cool to see more mainstream people checking out this stuff. My only suggestion to you would be to lube your stabilizers! Right now your keys with stabs are very rattly of you just grab some dielectric grease and slap some on, it'll fix that. You could also lube the switches but even I havnt tried that cause taking apart every switch to add lube then reassembling them all sounds like a nightmare.
was not expecting this video to be so refreshing instructive and awesome
Ah yes, the mechanical keyboard community; the only community more toxic and more willing to waste money than the audiophile community.
The mech keyboard community - more willing to waste money
The audiophile community - willing to waste more money
Toxic? I've had quite the opposite experience.
Seems pretty friendly to me. There's a bit of light-hearted teasing between people who prefer different things, but no one gets hurt.
I think it's slightly different from being an audiophile though, as far as I can tell audiophiles are looking for perfection in their equipment, whereas keyboard enthusiasts are more after uniqueness. The upper limit for keyboard cost is getting it manufactured yourself (although the number of keyboards you can own is limitless), whereas with all the research in to better audio the cost is limitless.
can mechanical keyboard people pass double blind tests?
@@heretolevitateme Absolutely, the keyboards are surprisingly different. I expect most people could tell the difference between different brands of laptop keyboard as well, the depth, mushiness and required force to press vary a lot.

@@snazzy I saw an interview with a guy from Corsair, if I'm remembering correctly, at CES and he said that while they use the entire rainbow of colors in their marketing, they realize that very few people display all the colors. Now, my first mechanical keyboard was a Thermaltake Poseidon with Cherry MX Blues, and I loved that board while I still used it on the daily. When I first found out about r/mk and the expensive world that it is, I ordered an Anne Pro v1 (60%) with Gateron Browns, and have been using that ever since. Most recently I got a Kira with Hako Clears, which I've been thoroughly enjoying at work, where the majority of my use is typing--which the heavier switches are a lot nicer to type on than I thought they would be (and heckin' quiet, to boot!).
Still, if you like Cherry MX Blues...then use them. Anyone who puts you down because you're using a prebuilt, or using Cherry switches...honestly, I'm not sure if they just have too much time on their hands, or otherwise just want to gatekeep this already tiny community.
Oh, and be warned on the box switches. The stems (unless these are the ones made with new tooling (doubtful)) are slightly out of spec with the standard Cherry MX-style stems, which have been causing damage to various owners' keysets (ABS, IIRC); making them unusable with any other keyboard or otherwise becoming wobbly or unstable. There are a few group buys for tools to resolve this issue by modifying each switche's stem...but its just something to keep in mind. IIRC, this mainly affects ABS keycaps; but I'd imagine it would also occur with POM and PBT caps as well...but, r/mk to the rescue on that one?
Either way, lovely build!

A tip for new solderers: If you want your soldering job to look very clean and professional get yourself a brush and use some alcohol to clean the flux from the board after you make the solder joint... Or just use 63/37 solder with no flux.
Hey, just a tip. KBDFans provides cheap stabilizers, unless you order genuine cherry stabilizers (they sell them, so does a local vendor called Novelkeys here in the US). If the rattle ever starts getting on your nerves, I suggest buying some genuine cherry stabs, and lubing them with some dielectric grease. This will improve the sound substantially, and in my opinion, makes the typing experience overall more enjoyable.

Hey! FYI, baking the cable into the coil is just 1/2 of the coiling process. After it’s cooled off, you invert the coiling, which gives the coil its “snap”.
Just take it apart once, put a piece of non-conductive foam below the PCB and you'll have a much more silent keyboard. If you want to go even further, then go for double shot PBT keycaps and again stick a piece of rubber mat below the chassis.
Great Video Quinn! Don't get addicted to spending more money on keyboards now. It's tempting lol
That sounds worse than my phone when I leave the clicking noise enabled while typing. 😁 cool video though
