DPU ALRIGHT!(in more ways than one.) I watched 2 videos today to help my understanding of why CSX has a DPU 40 cars back in a 150 car train. The first 30 minute video didn't tell me anything I didn't know. The DPU keeps slack out of the train and relieves pressure on the couplers ahead. The second, by an actual engineer, only an 8 minute video explained the placement by CSX. The 40 cars between the lead and DPU are all going one place, and may need to be divided to different sidings. After an hour of switching, it would take 30-40 minutes to air up the train to continue, but, we have our trusty DPU sitting there seemingly idle, but keeping the air up. Then you just hook up the air line, latch the coupling and drive off saving that 30-40 minutes.
I watch the cars on the CSX trains and then the NS trains and I try to see how they were built back at the yard. Someone suggested that CSX tends to group cars on mixed manifest trains and that NS just takes them as they find them. It may depend on the yard, but if I see any differences it would be cool :) And - ta da - DPU Alright!
@@WideWorldofTrains The person said they build the consist as they find the cars - that is the NS System and that CSX tends to group - gondolas with gondolas, grain cars with grain cars, etc. I watched his video and that was the case, but he is in FL.
All Class I railroads attempt to block the trains based on destination and setout points. It's possible that when you see the NS train they are going to a Classification Yard where the cars are blocked. Railroads this day and age tend to assist each other with blocking so that when they pass cars off to a connection they are pre-blocked. For example, when NS receives cars from CSXT at a point the cars should come over in 3-4 basic blocks. Something like NS-South, NS-East, NS-North and NS-local. Just making this up
@@brianhickey5949 Not by car type but by destination for the cars. If you have a Northbound train with let's say three blocks, the train may have covered hoppers in all three blocks.
Did i see snow in the one NS segment? That was one longggggggggggggg NS, i was expecting to see a DPU or 2 on it. And the CSX 6142 train, thats just about what you get in a decent H-O train set, but they include a caboose!
0:54 You are on the north side of the CSX Middle Road crossing as CSX train #Q363 approaches and passes. We see the Nestle Purina dog food plant in the background. 3:05 You are along Third Street as an eastbound CSX train #Q008 passes. 4:37 You are again on the north side of the CSX tracks at the Middle Road crossing and you are looking east and waiting for CSX train #Q008 approaches and passes the Middle Road crossing. 6:32 You are at the CSX Mile Post 41 curve as CSX train #Q168 approaches and passes you. As the engines past your location, the engineer gave you a horn salute. After CSX train #Q168 passes, you continue to watch it pass under the Control Point 39 signal bridge which is located at CSX Mile Post 40.1. 9:41 You are on the south side of the CSX Middle Road crossing as an eastbound CSX mixed freight passes. 11:21 You are on the north side of the CSX elevated tracks between Washington Avenue on the east and Central Avenue on the west as an eastbound CSX tank car train that is powered by Canadian Pacific and a CSX engine. I would think that this train is a train of crude oil from the North Dakota oil fields on its way to a refinery on the east coast. 13:34 You are in the parking lot on the southeast corner of Park Avenue and East Third Street as CSX train #Q008 passes with a mid-train DPU. 16:15 You are at the CSX Mile Post 41 curve as CSX train #C750, the Dunkirk Local, approaches and heads west to the CSX Yard in Erie, Pennsylvania to tie up for the night. In your comments on this train, you indicated that this was CSX train #745. According to the information that I found on the Internet, CSX train #Q745 is a local that runs from the Erie, Pennsylvania CSX Yard to Ashtabula, Ohio. 18:21 You are at Washington Avenue and Third Street as an eastbound CSX double stack train that had an end train DPU. 19:08 You are at the Norfolk Southern Middle Road crossing as the gates go down and an eastbound Norfolk Southern intermodal train passes. After the train you, you turned east on Progress Road and paced the end of the train to the Werle Road crossing. 22:47 You are in the parking lot at the southeast corner of Park Avenue and East Third Street. I think you said that this portion of the video was taken on 17 April 2021. A westbound CSX intermodal train passes on the elevated tracks with a mid-train DPU. After the train passes, you walked along the sidewalk on the south side of Third Street and showed us what was going on in the construction site where the pavilion was located. 27:07 You are at the Norfolk Southern tracks at the Newell Road crossing as an eastbound Norfolk Southern mixed freight with an MBTA passenger coach in the consist. 30:24 It is 14 April 2021 and you are pacing westbound Norfolk Southern train #309 along Werle Road toward Progress Drive toward the Middle Road crossing. You stopped on Progress Drive west of the Middle Road crossing to watch the train pass. 35:02 We hear a horn and you pan over to the CSX Middle Road crossing to catch an eastbound CSX train crossing Middle Road. You kept panning from Norfolk Southern train #309 to the CSX train. One time when you panned to the CSX train, you were able to catch the mid-train DPU on this train. After the CSX train finished passing the Middle Road crossing, you concentrated on the watching Norfolk Southern train #309 until it passed. You mentioned that you thought there were at least two hundred cars on Norfolk Southern #309. 39:07 You are at the west end of the elevated tracks through Dunkirk, New York at Robin and West Third Streets as CSX train #Q158 passes your location. Thank you for documenting all these trains and for sharing this video with us!
@@WideWorldofTrains you are saying that CSX train #C745 is the CSX Symbol for the Dunkirk Local. On 21 January 2021, I downloaded to my computer a list of CSX train symbols that I found on Railfan Wiki. That list shows that the CSX Symbol for the turn from Erie, Pennsylvania to Dunkirk, New York is C750 (Note that this turn is an eastbound turn from Erie, Pennsylvania to Dunkirk, New York. As an eastbound train, it would have an even number.). The same list shows that CSX Symbol C745 is the train number for the local that runs from Erie, Pennsylvania to Ashtabula, Ohio (Note that this turn is a westbound move out of Erie, Pennsylvania.
