  • Immune thrombocytopenia, also known as immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), is a condition where the immune system mistakenly targets platelets, leading to a decrease in their numbers in the blood. This can result in excessive bruising, bleeding, and in severe cases, potentially life-threatening hemorrhage. It can be acute or chronic and is often diagnosed through blood tests that show a low platelet count. Treatment options may include medications, corticosteroids, intravenous immunoglobulins, or in severe cases, splenectomy.
