    I love light weight XC bikes. If I had to reduce my bike collection (from 11) to one, it would be an XC race bike.

      For real a lightweight XC bike can do everything from long road marathons to moderate to extreme trails depends on how skilled you are.

    I built myself a flat bar gravel bike this year because had to much tension in my back with a drop bar. I am loving the new position, the control and the looks. Very happy with my decision. Gravel was much better with a flat bar in my opinion.

    When I do gravel events here in Belgium, they're almost always in the Ardennes, and the best gravel bike is a HT MTB as it typically gets far more saucy for your 40c or even 50c tires. My bike is an Ibis T29 with some custom Duke/DT Swiss wheels XO1 and Rockshox SID Ultimate, but 120 because I still ride singletrack. I do have a lockout instead of a dropper. The party trick for the T29 is that it can be single speed or geared, but also the rear triangle fully unbolts from the front triangle and fits into a Ritchey Break-away/S&S travel case. Works great if you do a tour somewhere else that you use the fast rail like Eurorail to get where you want to go.
    In my opinion...and I know the channel is sponsored by Hutchinson, but the Vittoria Mezcals are fantastic fast MTB tires for gravel, but still have great grip for XC.
    There is of course lighter options from Schawlbe....I think one model is something like 450g and wicked fast, but not the most reliable. The Mezcals won the Tour Divide w/o so much as a puncture!
    I know this is just a test, but if you run bar-ends inboard, you can get a psudo-hoods position which works great for long gravely sections and very little weight.

    I have a Scott Scale RC, roughly 20-21lb. I love it. Where I'm from there are trails and paved roads, so a gravel bike doesn't make sense here. The Scale obviously isn't as fast as a road/gravel bike on paved roads, but it can hold it's own and is a blast on the dirt.

    My first mountainbike that was a good gravelbike was a soft-tail 1998 Rocky Mountain Element Race frame with all other parts from a good Merida . Triple chain ring in front swopped to 28-38-48. The bar is narrow and very low. Which meant that i often stretch my fingers to get extra 5cm longer arms.

  • @lechprotean
    @lechprotean Год назад +1

    For anything under 100kms / 60 miles MTB is the way to go, but for longer rides drop bars give you more options to rest hands. Also for bikepacking or if you're mostly on paved or gravel roads then gravel is the way to go. Personally I've gone gravel + full-sus MTB as a hardtail XC MTB is indeed a pretty close category to gravel.

    I heard Safa Brian said on your other video about choosing gravel bike over MTB. All my gravel grinder friends have the same reason, especially when you have to ride MTB in the tarmac portion of your route. The main reason is the gearing of MTB is not big enough and you can run out of gear real fast in flat or descending tarmac. So, why not put gravel groupset into MTB?
