      @@YippeePlopFork mine is still stock. No mods. No upgrades. I had a HUGE problem with bed height. The first 6 months I had it, I couldn't figure out how to prevent tool collisions with the bed. I ended up finding some gCode to fix the z-offset, and no more tool crashes. Now I'm struggling with bed adhesion. The edges of my prints curl up. The head will collide with the curled print and break the print free, or cause the belt to skip this printing the remaining layers at an offset. Are these problems with the printer? Only if the operator doesn't know how to resolve them. And a year later, I'm still learning to resolve things... But that's true of any printer, it seems

    Thanks for taking the time to do such a through and well thought out review. I read the other comments before posting this and agree that this is not a required mod. This is for the user who wants to improve their printer and can afford upgrades, not everyone can and I understand that. To me the beauty of the Ender series is the vast number of upgrades and replacement parts that are easily purchased and the great user community that will provide help. I went with your linear rails on all of my Enders and have been impressed with the reduced maintenance and improved reliability. I think I would have tried this if I had seen your video first. Excited to see your other mods for the 5 Plus, interested in your comment about better drive motors. Keep it up Kris!!

    On the X-axis motor mount, I am wondering if one would not be better off moving it to the back of the extrusion and mounting the motor from the other side(facing forward rather than backward). That would balance(somewhat) the mass front to back with the hot end(and extruder on direct drive setups) on one side and the motor on the other. I do not believe that there is a clearance issue. You would need to reverse the direction that the motor runs in your firmware.

    • @kerseyfabs

    So I actually installed this exoslide last week on my printer. I agree and disagree with some of your thoughts. My whole experience was positive. I had to modify my cooling just like you did. I felt like it was not a negative due to the fact that the hero me is not factory sold. It would be hard for the designer to get it perfect for 100 cooling systems. I have seen way better quality in walls and corners. A bunch sharper. I also loosened up the tension a little on the roller which in turn allowed it to move more freely. My biggest issues with the whole kit is the extruded bar they send is not anodized black like the machine is. For me it was a big deal. Good point! I wish I would have thought to weigh everything before I installed it. So to answer your question in general, yes, it probably weighs more. I don't think it's a lot more. The original carriage, for example, has the metal plates for mounting and large wheels, where this one is plastic bearings. The original also has a larger motor mount. That you'd have to compare to more ExoSlides on the X-axis.
      Yes, the default cooling should mount fine on the new plate but you cannot mount the old plate because it doesn't have the right screw holes.
      I've mentioned the extrusion color to ExoSlide. Maybe we'll see an update.

      @@kerseyfabs One simple thing I think they missed in their design is the hotend mounting plate, the bolts that mount it to the exoslides should have been countersunk, not a buttonhead bolt. I have been thinking for a while that fans may not be the right tool for the job of cooling on a 3d printer. While a 40 mm fan is typically rated at 4-6 CFM the static pressure is typically less than .01 PSI (assuming my conversion numbers are correct). So how much of that CFM is actually hitting the part? Think about all the bad fan ducting. IF we would switch to an oil less spray paint compressor(2CFM?) (on floor or out in the garage), add in a 5(?) psi regulator, and an air blade tip, we MAY be better off. Running a small air line(think filament tube) should not cause any issues. We should be able to point the air blade (probably one from each side) exactly where we need the cooling. Yes, one would be looking at an additional $100(?) for the compressor (assuming you do not have one already) but how much money do we waste chasing better cooling with fans and ducts?

I have been designing a 40mm fan replacement as a test case, most of the day. For right now it is 52mm tall (yeah I know) and when I get access to a working printer again(library) I will print it. IF it shows promise I am pretty sure I can cut that down to about 20mm. Hopefully by that time (and if those experiments actually work), I can get up and running again and go after the real target (part cooling nozzle). IF you have someplace I could drop the current FreeCAD file or its STL that would be fine.

I was hopeful that the ExoSlide would do the trick. But it seems after watching your review, I still see the banding in your test prints. More or less to the same amount. Hard to tell from the video. My question is, where should we be looking to try and remove the banding? Since it appears the issue is not with X/Y since you have replaced the whole system. Or is this just something that is never going to go away with eh E5P? Again, thank you for all of the work you are doing! - Jason

    • @kerseyfabs
      @kerseyfabs  4 года назад +1

      Thanks Jason. I will tell you that in my experience, the banding comes and goes. I really don't know if it's settings or model specific but I don't always see it. For example, the Batman busts I printed in my Marlin videos at 50mm/s, I don't recall any banding. On these skulls though, i saw it quite a bit. It's something I haven't thought much about but I'll be happy to do more testing. My feeling is that this is more speed or slicer related than anything. Overall, I'm extremely happy with the print quality but I rarely print faster than 50-60mm/s for quality.

    Hi, very interesting video, I was thinking about KAY3d corexy conversion but now I'm seriously in doubt, for sure KAY3D will be more complex to install but I'm thining if this will be a better way to go without totally changing the printer. What do you think ?

    • @kerseyfabs

      The only reason I would switch to CoreXY over the ExoSlide is if I was determined to print at 100mm/s and faster. The only thing I can see it buying you is speed. That being said, I've never validated the quality myself to know how well it works.

    I just bought an Ender 5 plus, and it is my first 3D printer, in fact, I'm still waiting on delivery. Knowing very little about 3D printing, and only minimal at best knowledge of CNC's, I want to ask you if this printer can be even further upgraded to lead screws, eliminating all of the belt drives??? Also, do you know if this is available with a black 2020 extrusion?? Sorry, that's just my OCD kicking in.

    • @johanstrauss8951
      @johanstrauss8951 4 года назад

      The Ender 5 Pro is all black extrusion, and why upgrade lead screws? There is 2 of them, one each side. Belt drives? Then your thinking CoreXY kit, not this one.

    • @PaganWizard
      @PaganWizard 3 года назад

      @@johanstrauss8951 As I said in my original post, I have an Ender 5 PLUS, not a Pro as you stated. Yes, I am well aware that the frame of the Ender is in fact all black, after-all, I do have one sitting in my home, and I even watched videos about the printer before buying it. I was asking about the 2020 extrusion that is included with the ExoSlide system. Fortunately, I was able to locate a black 2020 extrusion online and am having it shipped for about $20USD, to keep my printer ALL black as opposed to black with an unfinished gantry that sticks out like a sore thumb. When I asked about adding lead screws to the printer, I was not referring to the Z axis, which obviously already has them. Instead, I was asking about the the Y axis, and the X axis, which are both belt driven. Since I made that original post, I have already found belt driven conversion kits for the Ender 5 Plus to make it CoreXY. There is a company called Kay3D that makes a conversion kit for the Ender 5 Plus, and I'm sure there are others as well. While I might not know a whole lot about 3D printers, I am not afraid of asking legitimate questions, and searching for information while waiting for an educated answer. Why would anyone want to buy this printer and upgrade it to be much better than what the company originally sold?? Some people like plain vanilla ice cream, while others like to add flavorings, and syrups, some even like to add fruit, nuts, and whipped cream. I'm really not much of a plain vanilla kind of person, which is why I subscribed to this channel.

    Personally I really dislike the belt tensioners the Ender line of printers come with. They are fiddly to get in place and tension correctly with the t-nuts at 90 degrees. The roller on the end is only held on on side which causes a slight twist which again may result in your belt moving to one side of the roller. If you search for "2020 belt tensioner" or "4040 belt tensioner" on aliexpress, there are a couple of variants of belt tensioners available with a knob on the end for easy adjustment. Some of these also seem to rest on the end of the v-slot profile on the side where they are not bolted to the profile. I have ordered a couple of these myself, but of course shipping from China takes time at the moment. :-/

    Great video (as usual). Two questions though: 1) is there a reason for changing the extrusion and not using the original one 2) it looks like the whole extruder is skewed after upgrade, is it because of the kit or inpropper assembly -this could also be the reason for banding you are getting on your postmod prints.
    UPDATE: after seeing price of this kit ended up purchasing MGH12H linear rails and M3 nuts and bolts on AE that had good reviews for $80 total which saves you about $50. Getting true linear rails is little bit more work but it gives you better precision, repeatability and longevity. Exoslide should consider redesigning this kit so as much oem parts can be reused and make price no bigger than $60.

      1) Most importantly, it allows people that are new to 3D printing to learn a lot about it as they go. If this is one of their first printers they can learn about each component with each upgrade.

    Woah woah woah hold on there. less maintenance than linear rails? That's a very bold claim... if you have decent linear rails, they nearly clean themselves. They have these awesome little parts on the entrances of the carriage that basically friction fit themselves onto the rail, and when it runs something over, it just wipes it away. If anything, you should only have to take a microfiber cleaning cloth (not the kind for screens or glasses mind you) and simply wipe away what is collected on the carriage. Then you can also wipe the ends of the rail itself, as that is where it'll all accumulate. other than that, you don't really have to do much. you lube them up with a decent lube when you first put them on, and go ham. SIGNIFICANTLY less work than anything else i've seen. With the exception of actual linear rods and really good quality slide bearings.. as those have the same end piece doohicky that wipes up anything on the rod, and you again, just wipe off the edges and boom you're done..

      I'm sorry to hear that. Although, to be fair, I wasn't trying to impress, just inform and give options.

      @@kerseyfabs No, I didn't really think you were trying to impress me but I did have the feeling you felt this system has some advantages. I disagree and it's expensive.

    lmfao, what BS, none of those "problems with stock rails actually exist. That kits just a gimmick presented by a paid shill.

      So there is no reason to upgrade any printer with the POM wheels because there are no problems? Why doesn't every manufacturer use them? And how can you deny anything I said when I can show you evidence? I have received zero payment for this video. The only thing I received was the kit itself.
      Also, maybe be less of an ass when you leave a comment. Try to be constructive.

      Personally I enjoy upgrading printers more than actual printing. These types of upgrades drive the industry which is literally booming. Yes stock enders make beautiful prints. I like unnecessary upgrades because it helps me understand what is going on mechanically. Being able to create linear motion is such a great skill. This guy may get free products or some kickbacks to do reviews, but he is a part of the open source community as and educator. These videos are critical for people like me who want to understand and lack other resources for traditional education. We're all just making it up as we go, and hot takes like yours are part of the reason I'm unable to make my own content. People are so mean when a screen and keyboard disconnects you from the living, breathing, feeling person you're ranting at. Do better for yourself stranger
