I view modding my ender 3 as a more affordable way to force myself to become knowledgeable about how 3d printers work both electrically and mechanically. My first 3d printer was a folgertecjh prusa i3 which I could never get to work after the first print. The Ender 3 was my first real working printer. It has way more successes than failures. And Through Modding it and taking it apart and putting it back together I've learned a lot

Everything about this video is spot on! I would point out that for the price, you could have gotten pretty close to a Trident kit. As nice as the Switchwire is, getting to a core XY printer is a big jump in performance, IMHO. Getting away from a bed-slinger printer may mean that you can't reuse the Ender 3 parts, but overall, it will give a big jump up in performance. Obviously, this isn't a comment Christoph, but for someone reading the comments considering upgrading their Ender 3.

Looks great, always fun to re-engineer something into a beast. Those first much faster prints feel rewarding.
Pretty sure I beat you on expense for an Ender 3 though, only thing stock now is the frame :/ 5 linear rails, IDEX direct drive, dual Z side lift belts, Octopus, AC heated cast aluminum bed etc. Has 10 micron Z resolution with microstepping disabled using a 20:1 reduction on Z. I designed it during lockdown and built it last year, every part printed was my own design including the compact DD's. It felt really good to get it up and runninng and tuned, Klipper is amazing.
One last thing I may do is ditching the old style V6 hotends and putting on a pair of Dragon UHF, sick of fighting nozzle changes.
That's what is fun about open source products, grab the CAD file and go nuts. Make something your own.

IMHO: too expensive solution was chosen
    1) If you include the price of a new ender 3, it should be new - with new wheels. Thus you can stay with the wheels. Minus approx 90 euro (including extra for an Ender 3 Pro).
2)If you'va got the rpo version, you would've had a magnetic table from the beginning. Minus 10 euro
    3) With an ender 3 pro, you can put your PSU on the bottom with no need to raise the frame (printables com model 187424-ender-3-pro-bottom-psu-mount). So you don't have to print skirts and all the base. Minus around 40 euro
    4) you can switch not to an expensive pahetus, but to an E3Dv6 (I chose mellow wind, see example printables com model 187417-bmg-wind-ender-3-stiff-mount). Minus 100 euro if you stay with the stock motor
    5) MINI12864 LCD is completely not needed, as you can use stock ender 3 screen. Minus 15 euro
    6) you've printed the dragchains, why buy a new set? Minus 25 euro
So in total you can get the same quality for only 534 Euro. Which is still significantly more expensve than the stock Ender 3 Pro. BUT! In reality you will pay even less, cause you wont buy from amazon - you will source your build from aliexpress during sales periods.
Nevertheless - your experience = good experience! Thank you for your video!

10:43 The thing is, though: a Bambu Lab P1P is way more than those 650 € from that screenshot nowadays.
The price shown on it's website is 770 € for Germany. With customs and (import) taxes your going straight to 1000 bugs if you would import that thing. And thats without that highly praised AMS module which would add like 300 bucks as well. So for less (building) fun a good deal more. =)
Although I have to say a newer Ender 5 S1 with a BigTreeTech Pad 7 and another Ender 3 for spare parts would also have been a valid option for me!
Especially since there are some folks selling their barely used Ender machines on Kleinanzeigen which can also be a solid option.

I start in English just because everybody can understand it.
It is a fever: I got an Ender 3V2, printed a couple of things and startet modifying. Second z-axis motor, self printed cooling fan assembly, full metal heatbreak, direct drive extruder.
I can’t recommend it because I regularly had weeks nothing was working. Frustration was bad. The good thing is I know my printer pretty well now. Wouldn’t do it again though.
Danke für ein sehr unterhaltsames Video.

I could write this in German, but I will stick to English.
Your sheer amount of knowledge, but also sheer lack off knowledge astonishes me.
Why was your Ender 3 having issues with layers, well you had a BL Touch, this continues adjusting the Z height, which will show the slack of the Z screw way more. If you had kept the normal mode, and used a glass bed your prints would be decent.
Slow but decent. The ender is a slow machine, and for 99% of the users, this is enough. Just like any engineering company won’t need anything faster then a Prusa MK3.

All this talk about speed, but why in the world is nobody seems to be developing a closed loop actuator like an actual servo (not those hybrid-stepper...)?????? Seriously, the speed, silence, and reliability advantage is far better.... look at the professional CNCs!....
Sorry about the rants.... it's been quite a day....

Rebuilding a cheap, outdated 3D printer sounds more like an episode of MacGyver than a wise investment. Sure, it might seem tempting to cobble together a Frankensteinian machine, but is it really worth the hassle? By the time you wrestle this clunker into questionable functionality, a brand new, feature-packed printer will be on the market.
Think of it this way: would you buy a used, unreliable PC just to browse the internet? Exactly. Unless you're a tinkering enthusiast with a Scrooge McDuck vault overflowing with spare parts, you're better off saving up for a decent machine that will produce quality results from day one. Invest in your sanity and your creativity - splurge on a reliable 3D printer that will keep up with your imagination.

Stock E3V2 with klipper, and change fanduct to satsana with 5015 cooling fan - 22min benchy, with good quality - not best, but good.

I'm wrapping up my v2 build with the stealthburner. I agree the stealthburner is kinda big. I'll probably revert it later on. Still it's a fun build. Definitely learned a lot by building an Ender wire.

we share a similar story. I found a core xy conversion from RH3D on RUclips. 200€ later it is similar to the voron legacy.
I didn't want to let the Ender 3 Pro die after 4 years and countless modifications

So My question is. With using just the stock ender 3 pro frame/extrusions, if I upgrade to a direct drive and Setup Klipper. Would I be able to achieve the same results as far as speed and efficiency or at least come close to the same results? My printers are a 24/7 work horse so taking one down to print parts for this, is basically not possible right now, because the down time would kill production for me. So just looking to do the minimum for now until I can get my inventory up.

I have gone pretty far with my E3 Pro already and I still have some work to do. But there are moments like this, after I saw your video, when I have to look into the CAD and see, if I should go the route of converting it to a switchwire. It wouldn't take another 600€ now, because I have many parts already here.

Nice! Regarding "being worth it," I think the answer is more nuanced than just the cost of the upgrade. You're repurposing some hardware that would probably end up in the trash. I'm in favor of keeping these junk Creality printers out of the trash as long as possible!

Holly, this is so awesome, my respect for this great video and the great build conversion for the ender 3, I have one too that is like my baby, purchased on 2019 and still rocking, recently I purchased a skr e3 v3 but have not install it yet, I want to use klipper with it, I want to be able to print higher temperatures material for print automotive parts, what kind of upgrade can you recommend me and if is possible to use the same fanducts that you used and same extruder without all the others parts conversion?
Another question is have you done multicolor prints on yours by simply changing filament color? Just curious about if would be possible by using the bltouch

I have a small clip of it from a while ago.

That was spot on, I want my ender to be perfect, not because I need to 3d print anything, but the engineer in me requires perfection. 6 months later, "hey honey, check out how great this benchy turned out"!!! Her, "what can it do for me?". Me "shrugs, nothing, its quite useless, I guess"

Hey, great video. Can you share more info on your toolhead setup? I looked a your git repo and there are 3 x-carriages and a bltouch holder. I'm slowly modding my ender to SW. I have a microswiss DD and hotend, without some machining I can't adapt it to a linear rail.

This should be called I badly built an expensive heap that chucks out poor prints. 9:18 Prints, utter junk surface quality. 9:11 so overexposed to hide the poor quality, what's the point in building a fast machine that you chuck all the prints in the bin
