im just starting to research these 3d printers and want to get into it cause i love making and crafting things and tbh it seems like a dang good freelance opportunity and seeing this video on how 3d printers can be upgraded which i did not know makes me want to get a ender 3 as my first printer very soon
@@josephgrn2818 Don't know if you found the answer all ready, but he says in his comment to this video "- Cost for all the upgrades (not including the raspberry pi): $138"
I LOVE that you basically made your Ender your own colour scheme; I saved this video for later so that I can do the same thing! The Raspberry Pi goes a bit over my head, but that may be an upgrade for much later. Great video :)
The way he did it is more clean and compact, but if you don’t care about looks you can pretty much just plug it in after installing software and use it.
I watched this video and I have actually done almost all of these things. A few must-haves are octoprint, it is sooo much better than having to take an sd card out of your pc and putting it into your printer every time you want to print. Another must-have is the glass bed and the metal dual gear extruder thing. Also if anybody thinks that the time lapse thing is cool, I believe he is using a plugin in octoprint called octolapse.
For anyone who installs a BL Touch some newer Ender 3's come with the non-silent new motherboard V4.2.2 .Meaning you dont have to use a boot-loader for the firmware. Also, there is a dedicated BL Touch connector
You've only uploaded 3 videos, but each one feels like so much time and effort was put in, and they all flow amazingly well. You're an extremely talented (content) creator! Hope to see more stuff you make in the future!
This video was my guide. I've probably watched it 20 times. And like 4 weeks later it seems so basic. Thanks for getting me through the first wave. Now I'm editing firmware and have replaced 80% of this machine. Science.
Outstanding work there young man! I like your attention to detail and appreciate the high production quality of your video. Thank you very much for these terrific ideas. As an old retired engineer, who is also a newbie when it comes to 3-D printing, you have taught me a lot sir. Much appreciated sir.
About that dual gear extruder... it's a great upgrade, not gonna lie. Much powerful than the stock one, but one word of advice: Add lubrication to the idle gear or it will eat up the metal below/above! Lithium grease should do it and you can also use it for the threaded rod.
just got my ender 3 a few days ago, and am incredibly overwhelmed by all the info that i have to learn. this just made me even more overwhelmed but damn was this cool to watch!!!! love your editing style too!
@@versesZero this whole video had, "if the handle on my axe breaks and I replace it, then the axe head breaks and I replace it, is it still the same axe?"
I have done similar upgrades with my Ender 3 and Ender 3 Pro. I just need to get around to re-programming my board which I've been putting off. If you're just doing a few, go with an all metal extruder kit (the plastic ones break after about 200 hours), board upgrade (silent steppers are key), a glass bed (critical upgrade), and add a bltouch. If you want, you can also replace the hot end with an all metal hot end. A Micro Swiss is a good choice as it will allow you to print at hotter temperatures for PETG, ABS, etc. However, I noticed when I put the Ender 3 and Ender 3 Pro in a mechanical room which has a consistent warm temperatures with no draft that the quality of my prints improved with no lifting, warping, etc. Great video!
@@joefaraone977 And they add so much functionality. The glass bed alone is worth it. I use a mix of water and sugar on the glass to increase bed adhesion. I haven't tried ABS printing yet, but printing PETG with the all metal hotend is worth it.
Wow, thank you man. I appreciate that. That would be awesome but i'm honestly pretty happy already with the response from the Ender 3 community so far haha
Great video. Thank you for compilation of good practical upgrades. Just got my Ender 3 Pro from Microcenter for $99. After seeing this video, I am super excited to start moding.
holy shit, I literally was on reddit and found ur vid and this is amazing!!! Great vid! I just order my first printer on saturday, an ender 3 v2. nice vid man
thank you! these are honestly pretty great printers at this price range and the v2 looks sweet! I kinda wished I got that one honestly but when I bought mine they only had the pro in stock. Good luck with yours, hope you have as much fun as i'm having with them :)
You've got some serious editing skills. Fantastic video! Also the printer stuff that I came here for was pretty great too. I too love to mod everything I buy and absolutely need a 3d printer.
Ive watched probally 4000 hours or more on utube and other places and have to say this was one of the best tutorials ive seen yet. And now have to figure out the chain cable and the knobs...those look cool .all the colors really make this pop!!! This should have been an option at the start and bet they would have sold more....thanks again man....
"hard to sleep because of the lcd lights" *me who has to pool the filament every 15 minutes and never leave his printer just in case" -nah it was never a problem for me.
Loving these upgrades and I've done a load of similar or the same ones myself. Have to say though the best upgrade I got for my Ender 3 V2 was a 2nd Z motor and screw assembly. It stops gantry sag completely and really squares up your prints - noticeable on taller prints or when you really really need things to be perfectly square.
My personal favorites that I could not survive without: 1.) Cable chains. Please please please I nearly had my printer make me some electrical spaghetti. 2.) CR touch (I prefer it over the BL touch). Saves SOOOO much time and the prints come out nicer. 3.) Glass bed. People were NOT joking when they said it adheres better. I nearly can not remove my prints after their done. Which is a good thing. 4.) The drawers. No more clutter!! 5.) Scraper holder. You need it way more than you would think. 6.) Z axis mods. All of them. The up and down axis was pretty half assed stock. So many good parts on thingiverse that make things smoother. 7.) For the light, I bought one from Amazon. Brighter and better in my opinion. I love it.
Ah yes, the cable chains were one of my earliest prints. Right after I installed Marlin and did manual (sensorless) mesh bed leveling because my bed is warped and has an almost 1mm dip in the center. I also bought a raspberry pi 4 with the Argon One all metal case, safe shutdown and fan control included. Powering the pi directly from the power supply is unfortunately not a good idea. Remember, you're not supposed to cut power to the pi without shutting it down first! That's how you corrupt the pi's SD card. Trust me, I did it twice and it actually *destroyed* one SD card in the process. I couldn't get windows to recognize it anymore.
Thanks for the video! I'm getting an Ender 3 pro to tinker with, and your mod video is great. So well documented that it will make life a lot easier for a total 3D newbie like me to get started. Excellent editing of the video too!
While watching this, I thought that I should comment on your superb video production skills. Then I saw some of the comments and see that you did get some love! Magnificent job, Scott!
Quick Question: Mine is on the way, and am building a cabinet for it to rest on. My question is how much space does the printer take? Not in means of dimensions, but more on the surrounding area it needs to work properly. One concern is the cords in the rear. I would like to have the cabinet done before it arrives, and any input helps! Thank you, happy printing!
Very nice job Scott. Bought the Anycubic Vyper which has allot in common with the Ender 3 v2 but it comes with lots of upgrades out of the box and is easier to install. Had some problems with the slicer software not starting on windows 10 and Chinese software drivers at start but it is ok now. Ultima Cura 5.2 solves this issue. Print quality is good as long the PLA feed goes smooth and the nozzle is kept clean.
Fantastic video. I just got my first 3D printer (Ender 3 V2). I haven't even unboxed it yet, but I can see me doing a lot of these mods that are suitable for my version. I'm a black and red colour scheme fan as well. So this is all perfect. Amazing editing work as well.
Ivan Gabriel it ended up being exactly $138 more, not including the raspberry pi since no printer comes with that i don't think (correct me if i'm wrong) and i already had that from other past projects. i also bought this before the ender 3 v2 came out so if you’re looking to buy i would highly recommend that one or the one creality just had on their kickstarter. comes with a lot of these upgrades already installed. good luck!
@Scott Yu-Jan @Ivan Gabriel I think this is a good question! for starters, a lot of the 3d printed parts are just fun to make, so even though they cost some money in filament, they will help you learn about 3d printing while also improving your machine. The non-3d printable items do cost money and some newer printers come w these features, but overall its a great learning experience and some of those newer printers offer less customization. So even tho you might end up paying close to the same modding it yourself, you have the full range of customization a stock printer wouldn't have. Totally up to you. If you just want a 3d printer with these features and you dont want to think about it, then by all means get an upgraded stock, but some people have a lot of fun customizing things themselves :)
Hey I would actually like to thank you for showing me 3d printing and a good starter 3d printer, this video first got me into 3d printing and I have started modding my printer in the same way. Thank you Man for your work.
#11 4:09 caught my attention. It will be a help to my problem. I'm a beginner at 3D printing, 1 month. So much to learn. Ender was a gift to me from my Brother including some upgrades. I have an under-extrusion problem. Gaps in layers. Filament feeding issue. I proved that by straightening out filament needed for the job and laying it out for the lowest drag possible. The object printed was good. No helping it. Printing direct from the reel,,,, if I did not help the feeding along, I would heard that feeder thump sound, and gaps appears in a layer, then it was trash.
The way you edit your videos is amazing. It must take a long time being able to edit myself! I would love to be able to learn how you film/edit some of the shots and time lapses! Also- great content too. I’ve watched this about 3 times now and can’t wait for my printer to arrive!
your info and storytelling here are great! I am curious why you went from a magnetic base to glass? I just did the exact opposite! I will be doing some of those other upgrades though
Great video! The upgrades were cool and you have a really nice presenting style! Seeing as you've already got the fancy new controller board, have you looked into replacing the stock Ender 3 LCD with a TFT35 touch screen at all? I've heard good things and I'd love to see your take on it. Cheers!
The TFT is honestly SO tempting. My favourite part about it is that you can even customize all the icons and skin of the interface too! i feel like i would have a lot of fun with that haha... i've gotten close to ordering it many times but honestly, since I added the raspberry pi, i rarely ever use the LCD on the printer anymore so.... probably not going to get that upgrade anytime soon. I also heard on some online threads that it can make troubleshooting things sometimes trickier? I'm not sure though. If you get it, let me know what you think. Cheers, and thank you for the kind words.
Hahaha, dude I had the exact same experience, felt great I just made my own 3d printed filament detector, after owning the printer for 2 years, then this video popped up in my feed and felt like I ain't done sh*t haha
That walk outside in the beginning of the video had me rolling. I'm glad I watched this too, I've been contemplating which 3D printer is best for what I want to do.
The duality of a lazy person: 1. I really wanna get all of these upgrades now. 2. I could print so many things instead of fucking around with the upgrades.
just got my first printer this week and just found this great vid!! question: are all parts that were printed in the video with PETG able to be printed with PLA? is it a preference thing or necessity? thank u!!
03:24 Only the people with zero knowledge about mechanics do the #09 It should be free at the end or you are causing more stress if it is not perfectly alligned (which you cannot do at home by yourself)
@@ScottYuJan I am curious about the z stepper spacer too. I just loosened the nut, ran the printer to the bottom and tightened it. Now it aligns with the motor shaft. Then loosen the frame and run it to the top, and tighten the frame. Now the sides should be parallel.

This is lovely. Your editing is well done and your humor is funny without derailing the video from your topic.
This is a wonderful balance of entertainment and enlightenment. Good job
Everybody talking about how he added LED lights and it's going to be as bright as the screen, not noticing the switch he installed that lets him turn them off while the unit is still running.
YES, YES THIS.
Hmm, could he not have wired a wee relay up to the pi so he could turn the lights on and off remotely when he needs to check on a print over the web?
@@BeardyBaldyBob Maybe, but my point is that everybody seems to think that the LEDs will bother him while he tries to sleep, when all he needs to do is go turn them off, and the printer will still run.
@@jlee7811 exactly bro!!! There is a big difference between a light you can control vs a light that's on the entire time of use. Some people's kids man!!🤣🤣

The time spent making this video must have been insane. This editing is amazing

About that dual gear extruder... it's a great upgrade, not gonna lie. Much powerful than the stock one, but one word of advice: Add lubrication to the idle gear or it will eat up the metal below/above! Lithium grease should do it and you can also use it for the threaded rod.

So how much did all these goodies set you back? (Thx!)
So... I did my own research, they're not that expensive when considered against the cost of the printer.
@@joefaraone977 And they add so much functionality.
The glass bed alone is worth it. I use a mix of water and sugar on the glass to increase bed adhesion. I haven't tried ABS printing yet, but printing PETG with the all metal hotend is worth it.

OMG This video convinced me to buy ender 3 then any other video on this platform. Amazing contents!!!
What are you printing that really really needs to be square? What are you printing that is so tall and not looking good because of gantry sag?
There's something so poetic about a 3D printer printing itself upgrades...
Fun fact at the beginning of 3d printing (around 2010) 3d printers printed a lot of pieces for other printers
you are really good at entertaining other people with things we've never seen before well done
My personal favorites that I could not survive without:
1.) Cable chains.
Bro i got ender 3 pro with preinstalled skr mini E3 v2 bl touch and marlin
@@ares274shymeyo7 Sweet! Don't forget to add bed leveling in the starting Gcode. I actually bought the EZABL kit as well as Ezboard Lite. Works great.

*"I used the printer to make the printer"*
Quick Question: Mine is on the way, and am building a cabinet for it to rest on. My question is how much space does the printer take? Not in means of dimensions, but more on the surrounding area it needs to work properly. One concern is the cords in the rear. I would like to have the cabinet done before it arrives, and any input helps! Thank you, happy printing!
I don’t have a printer yet, but you are a beautiful person for adding the links to the upgrades in the description
Whats the cost of all those upgrades + the ender pro, compared to just buying a better printer with almost all of those features?
The way you see the problems and idea creation is just awesome.
