      Fun fact: the Champion of Ravens stat block shows that he has +19 to stealth. If he was given Guidance and a Bardic Inspiration with PWT, he could roll a maximum of 65 on a stealth roll. 5e calls a DC 30 "Nearly impossible", and he'd over double it.

    • @Paris.HasFallen
      @Paris.HasFallen 3 месяца назад +1

      @@lucasmaloneywordsmith8661 You can go even higher than this if you do weird class stuff, I only spent like 20 minutes figuring this out but funnily enough, I think you'd only have 4 rogue levels. So 10 levels of ranger for Hide in Plain Sight (+10), 6 levels of warlock for Dark One's Luck (d10), and then 4 levels of rogue for expertise. You'd need to use ABI for your DEX to get to 20 and then use Manual of Quickness of Action 5 times (so you'd need 500 years, so just an older, ridiculously stealthy elf) to get your DEX to 30. So +10 from the ability score, +12 from expertise. So assuming you have friends who can give you Bardic Inspiration (d12), Guidance (d4), and you're a ranger so can cast PWT yourself (+10), it'd be a maximum of I think 88? I'm sure there's more items and/or class stuff I don't know about but still, this was fun.

      If he still has reliable talent, and there's no reason to assume he doesn't, he has a minimum roll of 29 at that point. The "nearly impossible" rating actually just means "above average" if you have reliable talent and a +19 bonus😂

    isn't 47 also the highest possible roll to have? nat 20 + highest ability score modifier (without any spells or items that add to your ability score even above 20) + expertise + a spell adding +10 to the roll (i don't think any spell or class feature can give more than +10). so basically Liam scored a jackpot on campaign 1

    • @seeker38
      @seeker38 3 месяца назад +7

      Depends on context. If it's just you on the move by yourself without wacky items? Almost. 6 levels in Fiend Warlock gives you Dark One’s Own Luck which you can use to add a d10. So with that the max is 57 (maybe, barring other features I'm probably forgetting). If you're just hiding in one spot (10th level Ranger with hide in plain sight for a flat +10) and you've been given Guidance (d4) and max Bardic Inspiration (d12) then max Stealth check is 83. But at that point you're a 17th level multiclass (Ranger 10/Warlock 6/Rogue 1) who has designed a build exclusively for the purposes of a theoretical ultra giga stealth that's so overkill it's comical.

    How do dms keep up with high rolls like this in long campaigns? Seems like it gets to a point where the bonuses are so high you might as well not even roll anymore

    • @peptlk
      @peptlk 3 месяца назад +1

      This only really occurred because Chetney has invested his Expertise from his Rogue levels into Stealth and because of the spell Pass without Trace which adds a flat +10 to Stealth rolls. Both of these are examples of features that break the generally more tightly bounded bonuses in 5e, but they still require investment and are specific to only certain skill checks. Generally rolls are not that consistently high in 5e. It is one of the major differences between 5e and other similar systems which indeed go crazy with higher bonuses and higher DCs as players level up. I am personally a big fan of bounded bonuses because it means DCs do not have to scale as much and as a result players who didn't heavily invest in a skill can still have a chance to succeed at something hard if they manage to roll well (instead of having no chance at success because even a 20 + bonuses wouldn't get them there)
      As a DM I just roll with it, they invested and specialized to be good at something so I let them be good at it. No character will be good at everything so there will be other challenges where they will be worse because of that specialization into one thing. Matt is letting them roll because he is looking out for Natural 1s, which he houserules to be automatic failures in most cases (likely to keep failure on the table with things like Pass without Trace).

    • @rorybisson756

      as a rogue, if you do it right there is basically a point where the lowest you can get is a dirty 20 I believe, so yeah you really "don't" have to roll anymore but the addict in us to chase that nat 20 means we roll anyway.
