At the time I shot the video I was not aware that it was also capable of reading SRS codes.
Honestly, I found this tool difficult to set up. I will admit that this may be due to the interface with my phone however. Once I got it up and running it seemed to work fine however. This tool can be a simple code reader, or it can be on par with some of the more high end scanners due to it's ABS, SRS capabilities, and the 'Code Connect' feature. Also with 'Code Connect' it can provide additional diagnostic information that is not found in many other scan tools. At least for the code I checked it seemed the information was minimal, but it was accurate. That said, this seems like it would be a nice scanner for the DIY and possibly for side work if you're a professional technician. It really depends on how much you want to spend on the in app purchases to unlock the tools full capabilities.

I've had one of these for about 6 months, and I use it at work all the time. My only real gripe is because it's wireless, it is VERY easy to leave it in the customer's car! Overall I do like it.
Just get the BlueDriver OBD2 Diagnostic Scan Tool Bluetooth Reader. It does it all with only one cost of $99. No hidden fee's like with the reviewed tool.
It doesn't...not even bidirectional.
Good review. Just a note Eric when using any blue tooth devices it's gonna take few seconds to try and locate and then connect. I went through it with a friend that bought a blue tooth scan tool. Tech support Suggested that. Then after that it worked flawless..
ELM and torque pro... This uscan tool isnt even close to worth the money!
I think my ELM327 eBay OBD2 adapter that I bought for $15 along with the Torque app on the Android/Google Play Store for $5 works just as well as this if not better. Easy to connect and has worked for me every single time.
I like the idea of having a portable unit that can be kept in the car and used with a phone for on-the-road emergencies, but it seems a tad pricey for that. But, for my purposes, for my '04 Passat, I like my registered ($100) version of VCDS-Lite and the $10 generic VCDS-Lite (409) compatible USB cable for my laptop. That gives codes and descriptions for everything from the engine, transmission, ABS, air bags, radio, even central locks (and systems if my car had them). I got codes for implausible signal to the driver's door lock (which doesn't always work), and an intermittent short to the front right speaker.
We also need the PID data for fuel tank pressure, A/C refrigerant pressure, MAF flow, EGR, MISFIRE history, intake MAP pressure, transmission temperature, trans gear, cooling fan status.
I can see all of these (not MAF) on my 1995 Buick and a few more using the Autoxray scanner I bought back in 1998 or so. BTW, I've learned how to unlock the features of the Autoxray EZ-READ, EZ-LINK, EZ-Scan tools. The manifold pressure reported by Autoxray of my 2000 Buick is opposite of reality, 9"Hg at idle and 30"Hg engine off, lol.
Powertrain Codes, etc. definitions are searchable online, so not a big deal thus a waste of money paying for redundancy.

Torque pro and an ELM Bluethooth adapter BLOW THIS DEVICE AWAY. At 1/3rd the cost too. Eric, you should check that out. It has changed my life.
Go into the Bluetooth settings on your phone and select the actron scanner. This will force it the phone to connect to it. Then open the app and run your scans.

Great review - mostly because it demonstrates the problems that many users will have when using this type of scan tool/app. The problems Eric encountered in connecting, firmware updates, and questions about how to use the interface are quite common. Myself, I use the $20 BAFX scan dongle, and the $5 Torque App. The Torque app has most of the same features with added dials and graphs for real time monitoring. All in all, great job Eric!
I've heard great things about the Torque program. This seems a bit limited especially since it doesn't include ABS codes. Any basic scan tool also includes ABS capability. This seems like they are just trying to squeeze more money out of people after the purchase. I think freeze frame data should be a paid feature and ABS should be standard. Ideally when you buy a physical device there shouldn't be any additional charges to unlock capabilities. That's just wrong (my opinion).
As said by a previous comment, Torque pro with ebay bluetooth is the best combination by far. If you want to spend a couple of paychecks, snap on has the next best thing.
I have CarMD and it works great used it the first time two years ago found out the problem for my car found out how much the piece cost plus labor and I didn't get ripped off.
I have an elm327 that does pretty much the same things with the Torque app but at a much lower price.

Torque Pro + the Elm327 v1.5 is the best solution by far. I leave the adapter plunged in and don't even bother taking it out. The newest version is available on amazon for $11 with torque pro being under $5.
I have found that iOS devices tend to be a little bit picky when it comes to Bluetooth pairing to non-audio devices. They seem to work fine with a car's hands-free audio system, but non-audio devices don't seem to want to "stick."
A workaround I have found is to tap on the Settings icon on your iOS device, then tap on the Bluetooth selection from the list of settings in there. You can then check to see that the Bluetooth device (the U Scan tool in this case) is actually paired AND connected. If it doesn't say "connected" next to the U Scan tool in the list of paired Bluetooth devices, make sure the tool is plugged in and the vehicle's key is on, and then tap on the U Scan tool in the list of Bluetooth devices listed on your iOS device. After the U Scan tool shows "connected" in the list of Bluetooth devices, then you go back to the home-screen and run the device's associated software with no problems from that point forward. It seems to me that it will stay connected as long as you're actively using it, and will at some point "forget" the connection again after you're finished using it (which means, of course, you'll have to go through the whole "Settings | Bluetooth" thing again the next time you want to use the tool.)
This is an iOS problem, not a problem with the U Scan tool itself. It especially manifests itself with iOS 6.x and earlier, although I have seen it crop up on iOS 7.x occasionally.
I use OBD Fusion for my iPhone, which gives you a lot of features for the price. Live dashboard, code definitions, logs, monitors, maps. It works with most wifi/bluetooth OBD scanners. The problem is always going to be that initial connection part. Check the software forums for tips; I found that the IP address, for connecting via WIFI that the company provided, was wrong.
I bought one of these a couple of years ago (not same brand, just a cheap nock-off ELM/OBD-II generic bluetooth dongle) off eBay. It's been working flawlessly on all the cars I've tried it on for scanning error-codes and reading raw-data and has really been a handy tool.
There are actually some good free apps to choose from on Android Play Store.
My Android version has 6 or 7 screens of live data. I was impressed. As well I hear Bluetooth on the iPhone is different than standard Bluetooth. That is probably why you had connect issues. I have had zero connect issues with my Samsung Galaxy S4 and S5
I think I'll just stick with my old out of date Snap On MT2500. They only cover up to 2008 and no longer have support from Snap On but my newest vehicle is a 1998 Neon so this suits me just fine. It will read codes OBD (with the proper adapters) and OBDII. It has a vehicle database in the program cartridges. It reads Live data and if the vehicle it is plugged into will allow it, communication between it and the PCM. It will allow you to control components of the of the vehicle (EGR, Fuel injectors, Fuel Pump, etc). Like I said they're out of date now for using on the newer cars but the price is now reasonable enough to be an excellent DIY tool for someone with older vehicles like me. Just my 2 cents worth.
Personally I use Torque, I think it may only be available for Android though. It works with most bluetooth adapters fairly well. The only difference I have found using cheap adapters vs more expensive versions is their speed. If you're patient the $10 adapter will work just fine, but it does get annoying trying to read a lot of live data at once.

i have this same scanner. Works great, using it with an iPhone 5. Have live data with it too.
My brother got one of those. Paid $15 for the cheap chinese one. Works good to me. Has connecting issue too.
You can get one of these OBD bluetooth things on ebay for under 10 bucks, and then buy the Torque app (both iphone and android) for about 5 bucks. You get access to all sensors live, and all codes.
I don't believe Torque is on the iPhone app store. I've looked a few times.
blosom2315 DashCommand is the app for iPhone thAt is similar to Torque. Not all readers and apps can read manufacturer specific codes, which is a big deal when you want to change transmission oil on newer Mercedes vehicles...
Hey, thanks for this review. Too bad I already purchased it before watching lol. I had trouble finding the data stream so I'm glad you brought that to light in this video. Actron did a horrible job making their interface user-friendly. The least they could have done was put a user guide on their website. I just wanted to drop this line and say thanks for the video!
From what I've read, iOS has limited OBD II options. Android has tons of cheap-o bluetooth adapters (typically $16-ish) compatible with the awesome Torque app.
Yeah... A $15 OBDII Bluetooth module and Torque is far cheaper and just as capable. Not to mention just a better combination of products.
The tool; itself seems fine. It is the app itself that they try and get you to use that seems lacking. You could use that bluetooth scanner with another OBDII app like Torque, which is a million times better. Id recommend anyone interested in a bluetooth scanner solution to check out the Torque app on their android phone or tablet.
Erick, you should be using an Android phone. It has a big screen and the same apps as an iPhone. I had good experience with ELM327. There are free Android apps for reading codes and reading live data: carista and torque lite for instance.
The ELM372 type like what you can get on ebay and amazon are cheaper and do almost as much in my experience. You can get them for about $8 off ebay. the torque app is much cheaper as well, and does codes and real time data. The only things I haven't done with it are abs and srs codes, but I don't usually have codes for abs when I'm working on a vehicle that aren't related to an obviously bad sensor. I haven't ever actually had an srs code on any of my vehicles so I don't know if it can do readouts for those as well, but the transmitter works with many different apps so it might work with the programs listed here as well.
I bought the Australian Version from Supercheap autos at a PREMIUM price. Biggest waste of money I have ever spent DO NOT BUY for Australian vehicles, car in the container states categorically will work with my vehicle, all I get is car is moving(wrong!) or out of range(less then 15cm) People save your money and buy something that works
You should also do a review and comparison on the cheap ELM Bluetooth readers and the Torque Pro app
I've been looking into these due to it being compact and easier to carry around then my snap-on modis. It would be nice to have something at the house . The only thing is its lack of Abs capability might deture me away.
Hey there Eric I have bought a similar device called Blue Driver, its Wifi and Bluetooth capabilities, I have checked my 2000 Honda CRV and my wives CRV which is a 1999 I found that it passed all scans, but I'm a bit surprised that it passed I maintain both CRV's but the next day just to be sure I checked the 99 CRV it found a code saying P0118 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit High, when I took it out for a highway drive and came back to the garage and checked it again and this time the code was gone it passed, since last week I check it and again found no issues, weird or what...
You can get OBD II - USB cables and get FREE software on your computer for about $10. You can get a lot of different info more than this tool after you spend more than 100 dollars to ge tthe apps etc. Thats my DIY choice plus you get a bigger screen !

Certainly your computer setup is nice, however I have found this U-Scan to be really convenient being small and cordless, no dangling wires just plug in the blue-tooth dongle, fire up the app and go. The only complaint is having to pay for extra features, which I think should be all included. The app and database needs a bit more polishing, but it's definitely a useful tool for diy-ers with a neat smartphone interface.
Up until 2006 or so, Actron scanners were made in USA. Now, they are made in China and facing more troubles throughout the product lines. The same goes for Innova & Autel.
I still wonder why no one in Japan makes DTC scanners.
look up ELM 327, its a bluetooth obd ii adapter and has bluetooth and can connect to your phone. also look up the app torque, i know its on android not too sure about the iphone
These apps have dropped the bottom out of the market for electronic applications like this, just like they did to the point and shoot photography industry. The annoying fiddling with electronics aside, you have to pay 15X more for a product that is 10% better. Even high level products have some annoying connection problems.
Great Video...I've done everything but stand on my head and cant figure out how to Erase Codes..I use an Android phone and am just not seeing it. I also have to constantly unplug my UScan.. Its a bit testy getting it connected. I think I paid something like $90. ??? Worth it???? Thanks
I got an OBD II bluetooth module on eBay for $9 that does the same. I'm using Windows Phone, and there are a couple of apps that work with it - OBD Auto Doctor, CarDash, and AutoGaugeX.
Ive had one of these for about 5 years now mine when I bought it was $40 plus 5 bucks for the app "torque" on my phone a vuala I have a code reader that reads live data stream and even has a dyno on it :D
Like many have said Torque Pro app ($5), and elm 327 adapter ($15) has better price and features. Torque Pro app was the reason I got an Android.
If you also want Mode 6 and Enhanced Functions for: Ford, Nissan, GM, Toyota; Car Gauge Pro ($5.95) is also a great app.
Looks similar to the "Torque App" but with not as much functionality. I bought the app for about $5-$6 and a Bluetooth adapter for about $30. Maybe you could do a review of the Torque app.

PhattyMo I think it's really cool that they work together! Scannerdanner seems more of the professional dealer mechanic and Eric more of the diy garage type. Hope they do a lot more together so we can see their skills grow as they can learn from each other and we can learn from them. Two intelligent guys.

Blue tooth connection is done through the app itself. NOT through the phone. All these devices work the same way.
Or just look up Bluetooth scanners on amazon, (like I did it's 25$) and get an app called torque, you buy it once and it dose all of that stuff at a lot less of the costs
Make sure it works with Iphone. Most do not.
The one I have dose not, but I have an android, so it matches me, I've used the live data on mine, its pretty quick and I wouldn't go back to a normal scan tool

I wonder if the torque app would work with the uscan module. I have the module, but it would be cheaper to buy the torque app and read what I want to read, instead of paying to unlock more features in the uscan app.
It didn't for me. I tried that in the beginning. I paid for the programs and it works great.
the live data u missed that u could had another list if u look at the bottom of the list u had two dots u were on the 2nd dot so if u slide ur finger over u can go to the next list but the U-scan isn't the only one i found three types just like it but one little cheaper u get all the stuff u get on there then there one little bit more but its u can do a lot more with it if u want to know about them message me
I just emailed the U Scan guys asking if a generic Bluetooth OBD2 adapter would work with this or if this app only works with a U Scan adapter. I have the ELM adapter from Amazon for like $25 and wanted to try this app just for the fun of it. I can tell already it's not going to replace my Torque Pro.
Eric, you should definitely try the "torque pro" app for android phones. The price is really low and its such a strong piece of software. I paid ten bucks for my bluetooth scanner on dealextreme and I get all the real time data i need. Truly a remarkable piece of software. You should definitely try it and review it. I set my distributor timing, TPS and idle with this tool after an engine swap and I've never set any of that before on any car. I could see individual O2 sensors. I've looked into ABS codes and others. Mine has been plugged into many vehicles. I also was able to transfer all of the paid program stuff over when I broke my phone. If it doesn't light up when you plug it in check the cars fuse for OBDII port. I've experienced minor glitches with mine, but always was able to get it to read and clear codes. Mostly errors on setting up the vehicle, I'm thinking it was the app side of the equation. Samsung phone. I plug in, open the app and read codes quickly now.
Time to put more gas in the car! A word of advice, you really shouldn't let it get that low to the point where the light comes on because it's not all that good for the engine or the fuel pump for that matter.

I've got this same tool pretty recently. I'm technically inclined, so to me, it seemed pretty easy to set up. Plug it in, wait for the flashing light. Connect to it via bluetooth. Turn on the app, put in the vehicle data, and scan away. It might not be a tool for those who are a bit more "slow", no offense Eric.
I only did the in-app purchase for the powertrain so that I could pull tranny codes and view the live data. But I somehow have the ability to pull the ABS codes also. So far, it's been spot on, and has been a huge help for me in my shop.
I am going to for sure check out the other platforms eveyrone has been talking about though. Does anyone suggest a good reliable bluetooth scanner that they've purchased?
That isn't what "assembled in the USA with globally sourced materials" means. Basically no low value chips are made in the USA anymore, however many of them are designed and sold by Japanese, US, or European companies. The PCB, assembly, and housing don't create enough value to move the product into being label-able as "Made in the USA" under US trade and import laws. As such I imagine that their profit margin is actually quite low.
Grab scan XL its free with ford and gm pids( abs and transmission pids also) if you know where to look.
I guarantee you will be very impressed.
It looks like they changed pricing since this video was made. I can't see the prices since I purchased them before, but it also looks like one of the addons was merged with power train data

I'm kind of in agreement, you would have probably assumed there was no code after the initial scan if you hadn't put it there deliberately. My scantool was £12 on the bay..cheap as chips and reads literally hundreds of codes (you get a book of 'em)
5 years later and they still haven't fixed the bugs in the U-Scan 9600's bluetooth connection. The app is outdated as well. Retailers should drop the product.
I have an ELM327 Bluetooth and OBD car Doctor free app. Works great. Gives live engine data.
Same here. About ten bucks on eBay and there are endless free apps that cover more than just reading codes.
Mine even picked up the theft codes, it's a great tool

I got a generic Chinese ELM based OBD2 bluetooth adapter on eBay for like $10 and use it with Torque Pro.

I bought the same off eBay, and had it sent direct from China. I think I paid £6 total for the device and Torque Pro software.
Check in ebay or Amazon the autel 319 $34 dollar plus free shipping and you can see "live data" to help with the diagnostic. 😀
This is a nice implementation, but an Ad-Hoc wireless connection, maybe N, would be x200 better... Bluetooth has innate issues with it, It has always been buggy. Maybe someone will put out a version for that. An Ad-Hoc connection in case you don't know, is basically Wi-Fi that comes from non-internet devices.
AAD-HOC is just WiFi between two devices like two computers, two phones, a laptop and phone, etc. It just means WiFi without a router or access point. Has nothing to do with internet, you could actually share internet via AdHoc wifi, for instance if you had one laptop hooked to ethernet for internet you could share that out to one device via AdHoc

Eric, Thank you for a nice review of the scan tool. It seems overpriced and not really ready for prime time. The section on passing a State emissions check was the real shock to me. Why does the software not ask for the State you vehicle is registered. The software would then download/access the specific standards for your state and use them to compare the results read by the scan tool to State specific standard. This would give a much better idea if your vehicle will pass a specific State emissions test.
Cheap amazon OB2 to bluetooth adapter and Torque. Less than $20. Lets you scan/reset codes, read live data from sensors and much more.
To be fair for the product, iPhones/iPads are *notorious* for issues with Bluetooth devices. It's not a surprise to me that this doesn't connect up well.
I have a 2003 Cadillac CTS May battery light is on. And the info center is telling me to "check electrical system" The battery is good (other than the fact that it is only about 4 months old) and its reading about 14.5 volts when running. My code reader isn't catching this nor is the ones at Autozone, O'Reilly's or Advance Autoparts. What should I do? Thanks in advance

theres an app in android store which costs 3,50€ for bluetooth devices that you can get for 15€ at ebay. gives you live data and you can even delete failure codes
Gotta agree with the some of the comments, torque pro for android and a generic elm scanner is far superior.
i got a 12$ bluetooth scanner that only sticks out half an inch and it worked right out of the box with Torque. it took 2 seconds to connect. definitely not paying 70$
i have a OBD scanner like this but its a different brand and got it for $20, i just leave it in my OBD port at all times haha

Add Torque Pro for $5, and you get a lot of functionality for $25. Probably not as much as whats in this video, I don't personally own it, but you can get down to trans temp and O2 readings if your vehicle supports it.
Toss that uscan & get a Lemur Blue Driver. Much better & no connection problems.
why not to leave it permanently in the port, and when a problem comes up, it will notify you immediately !!! i think it`s not working when the key it`s not in the ignition, and the engine is not running, and it would not drain the battery of the car.

I have a BAFX scanner ($25) that works on any vehicle. I use the free Android Torque app that gives real-time data, reads codes and can clear codes.
The idea that you have to pay for EVERYTHING even another vehicle gets the Actron off my list of things I would consider. There are tons of free apps that will read codes and show real-time data. Then cheap add-ons for advanced diagnostics.
Try the device on some of the other apps. Most of these use clones of the original ELM327 bluetooth device so any app should work. Many of these clones have issues with reliable communications, my device has bee rock solid as I read the reviews first and found one that did not have problems getting a reliable connection.
Looks like there is Dynochart and ioOBD for free.
you can get bluetooth one from china for like 10 bucks, and it works perfectly, can read codes, delete fault codes, and you can read real time data with it
There are generic ELM327 bluetooth/USB/wifi scanners a lot cheaper from ebay ($15) Also Torque Pro for Android does pretty much all the things this does (except maybe ABS) for like $5

Does anyone recall the intro to a video where Eric says "are you happy or are you excited?" then he says get happy/get excited?
I have a u-scan and every time I try to use it I have to troubleshoot it. The last time I tried it the green light won't com on. Actron says I have an ACC fuse blowen some where so all fuses test good I think they need to trade me

I did make it in Apple's Soundtrack so it's quite possible. YT is funny about music that's why I don't use it often and when I do I make sure it comes from a source that won't be an issue.

The normal mode of operation (at least on Android devices) is to activate Bluetooth, then pair up the phone with whatever device you want to connect via Bluetooth in the Bluetooth settings, and then start using the app which utilizes the Bluetooth connection to do whatever it's doing. Maybe the technical difficulty, in this case, came from a lack of knowledge?
Although I don't know whether iOS devices also pair Bluetooth hardware in their Bluetooth settings (but it wouldn't make much sense letting each app do it on its own, since it would be illogical, since with for example Bluetooth headset you'd use the audio player and the phone app, so why should the app be bothered to connect with Bluetooth devices, since it doesn't know what is available and stuff, because that's all done by the Bluetooth stack which only provides the device that are paired up to whatever app wants to use them).

I regret buying this U-Scan and wish I bought the full wired unit. what a waist of money :/
