I bought a Blue Driver scanner a month ago (May 2021) and absolutely love it. It helps me understand what is wrong with my car when the idiot lights come on and make sure when I take it to a repair shop, they are getting the same codes and not trying to pull a fast one on me.
I just purchase one. It arrived yesterday. I connected it to my 2009 Chev Duramax. Found trouble code P2033 which was a EGT2 sensor. Purchased the replacement sensor from the dealer for $55 & installed. Total fix was around $160 with the cost of the blue driver device. This repair would have cost around $300 at the dealer. Very satisfied customer hear!!!
It would have been awesome if the problem wasn't the actual sensor. Sadly, while this tool is great, it gives people a false sense of knowledge. What if it wasn't the sensor, but a circuit problem? ECM? PRogramming issue? WHat would you have changed next? Codes are not always the problem. They can just be symptoms of problems found elsewhere.
That's why most shops charge u 100 to 120 just for a simple diagnostic to pluck a code reader in and tell u wats wrong.alot of shops realized how time consuming it is for someone to come in and just ask for what code is in their car so they can then go do the repair themselves..most shops are smart and will take the keys and have you sign a peace of paper work stating $120 diagnostic fee sign here and keys are mine. . Trust me take your car to the shop and try to get a free diagnostic good luck.how ever there are some that still do which are the ones that are thirsty for business..You can go to autozone and they will do it for free. You dont need to be friends with a mechanic to get your codes read just take it to autozone or oreillys. Now the 100 to 120 diagnostic fee sometimes the issue may be more complex then just a code. These codes are like a compass it will only show you which direction to take to find a problem. Sometimes paying the diagnostic fee to see what's really wrong makes sense so you dont end up buying a unnecessary part for a code that got triggered because it has 5 different sensors going bad or one sensor. Codes don't tell you that loose wiring is causing a sensor to go bad. You buy a sensor because you just read the code that says replace sensor instead of troubleshooting the whole system is just a waste of money. I'm not a professional mechanic but managed to do some complex repairs In my cars by using codes and then troubleshooting . You will save alot more money by figuring out what causes codes to come up then to just listen to codes and do what it tells you like *replace pcm. * replace automatic transmission * replace engine * replace car...heck just buy a new car everytime something goes wrong if that's the case.it be much cheaper in the long run.instead of replacing multiple parts..just replace the whole car and you save alot more money !!
you just got lucky. You could have bought one of those $19 code scanners from harbor freight and got those codes up and replaced the parts, but as any mechanic in the trade knows, only 15 percent of the time the sensor is bad and the other 85 percent is either a false code from something else or bad wiring.
Hello Eric, I just wanted to give a long overdue THANK YOU for making the last 5 years of learning how to "stay dirty" with my vehicles more enjoyable and educational than I ever thought possible. Last week I replaced my compressor and the cold feels almost as awesome as the fact I know I did it correctly. Also, for the last two months I've been car shopping and I think I need to make sure this in my pocket before my flashlight and white paper towels!! Eric The Car Guy the O2 sensor data and wide range sensor data was not a glitch. There is a difference between an O2 sensor and an Air Fuel Ratio sensor( wide range) the data read correct. The wide range or Air Fuel Ratio sensor does not change like an O2 sensor does. The values will change very little and usually somewhere in the 3 volts range unlike an O2 which will change from approximately 0 to 1 volt. The reason why the signal may have looked switched may be cause the cat had not lit up yet allowing the rear O2 sensor to switch rather than staying in the .7mv range. Also the A/F ratio sensor will react opposite to rich/lean conditions compared to O2 sensors.
You can just leave the ODB reader plugged in all of the time while driving. It's not going to hurt anything and if a code is thrown you can clear it just sitting at a red light! BTW...this is the favorite tool for used car dealers and car auctions selling shit boxes. My suggestion is whenever going to look for a used car.....bring this with you ALWAYS! The only thing I wish it could do is see a history of codes that have been recently cleared out. It's a great thing to have...I have one and have used it extensively when purchasing used vehicles!

It dose not do any good to clear a code if the issue is not corrected the check engine light will just come back, and clearing a trouble code will not make your car pass smog anyway
Eric. I just purchased this as I was having issues with a 2007 grand Cherokee. And,esp, traction control, unit found a bad wheel sensor along with my backup module, ignition switch and dam near 15 recalls that never got handle. Also used it on a used car my daughter was looking at . It showed what codes had been cleared by the stealership. Well worth the price for the backyard mechanic like myself.
I have just purchased the BlueDriver, i must note that it will not provide transmission temperature for 2015 F150 3.5 turbo or 2017 Nissan Maxima. They have indicated to me that it will be available in the future.
I found out the same thing, trans temp does not exist on my 2009 Jeep Wrangler. I really like this scanner, I hope they update that soon, kind of a bummer other less expensive scanners have the trans temp available for my Jeep.
Purchased apps are gone. You get it all now when you download the app. They listed to their customers who complained about having to buy additional or upgraded apps, so they added to the price of the product and gave it all right away. Much easier for the consumer. I paid $100 for this and it has everything. It works great. This was a great decision as now you just download the app and go. I have it on 3 devices and my blue driver works with all of them. This means if I get a new phone, just download the app and it will work. A friend wants to borrow it, they download the app and they can use it too. Live data is great! It doesn't support everything for every vehicle, however, it is getting continuously better as they update the app. Mine has improved in the 6 mo that I have had it. Customer support is great. That says a lot. They told me that they are continuously improving the product and I can expect to see this through updates in the software. One of the troubles they have had has been through licensing from vehicle manufacturers. They have insured me that they are improving this and more is coming out. Mode 6 is an area where I will see this. It's a little confusing now, but will get better as they obtain the liscenses to publish the information. For $100, this unit gives you tons of information that was only available with a very expensive scan tool just a few years ago. This is a true scan tool, not just a code reader.
The issue is these cheap scanner mfg companies won't or can't pay what snap on, autel and the other high dollar scanner companies pay for licensing. The more they pay, the more info they get. For a $100 bt scanner, you won't get much info. Ford especially won't sell all of their secrets, not even to snap on. They want you to buy the Ford IDS scanner instead. When I purchased my Autel MS906, the licensing war was heated. I paid $1000 for it vs $10,000 for the snap on. My autel would do everything the snap on would do and perform better at some features. Then word about the licensing with Gm and Ford became inflamed and talking of lawsuits had me worried that Gm and Ford would pull the plug on Autel. In the end, I got lucky. With that said, these bt scanners are a great spare to keep in your vehicle. I have an el cheap elm bt scanner that stays in my vehicle that reads basic info, has live data, mode 6, graphing of sensors etc. I use it when seeing strangers broke down on the side of the road or my own if the cel lights up while I'm out and about.
I have both. Needed to get the BlueDriver to read ABS on wife's SRX. If was not for that I would not have bought it. i do like the way you can layout the guages on the torque app better. Easier to read while driving.
I have a VXDAS Nexzscan in my vehicle: a 2007 Xterra. I was driving one afternoon when the Check Engine Light came on. My scanner determined it was my gas cap. Not only was I able to diagnose, repair, dismiss the code, VXDAS Nexzscan offers a subscription for personal use. It has features such as 40k DTC definition,retrieves generic,manufactures-specific and pending codes as well as vehicle information(VIN,CIN,CVN) .including the ABS/ Stabilitrak codes.and shows service intervals, what service is typically needed, average prices, and is able to find repair shops. VXDAS Nexzscan can show some live data as well. VXDAS Nexzscan cannot do a smog check nor show freezeframe data, but with my model year to fail a smog requires extreme wear in the exhaust or engine, which it has not come to. I’d like to see a comparison of VXDAS Nexzscan and bluedriver, along side dealer-level or shop diagnostic tools for fairness.
Phone apps blew the bottom out of the market for point and shoot camera sales, and now they are working on the code scanner market. Of course the devil is in details, like complete data, live data graphing, upload speed, freezing screens, etc. But those kind of glitches seem to happen with all generic scanners, regardless of price. If I didn't already have a good scanner (autoenginuity), this would be worth a look.
I have a pro Autel, but also have a Bafx bluetooth el cheapo scanner as well. Nothing wrong with owning 2. I keep the el cheapo in my truck and the bi directional scanner in my shop.
This is the future of automotive diagnostics,because is a less cost with a huge capabilities people will stop paying 10.000$ for a Snap-on Verus,Blue Drive plus a good scope and you are done for the start.Sooner or latter all those expensive scanners will disappear because those little devices can give huge output for a small input cost so what's the point to pay 10.000$ for a scanner or another good one is getting a good diagnostic software for a laptop.Paying huge money for a fancy scanner and after two years fancy scanner is an old model.Information is a software that can be integrated in a smart phone,is only matter of time.

Real old video, but if anyone says 100 bucks is a ton, well it may be to most people who buy it, as they're trying to save money. But if you go and look in a code 4-5 times it's well worth it. Also if you are a type of person to go to your local Coffee shop each day and get a 3-4 dollar coffee...well don't do that for a month and it's paid or, or any other extra expenses. Anyways i just got mine ordered as i seen glowing reviews for the price point. Worst case you have an idea of how much it might be to get something fixed on your car and how serious it is.
I can't wait till they have a STAR Diagnostic Bluetooth device. THAT DEVICE WILL RULE THE DIAGNOSTIC WORLD! A star diagnostic for luxury cars such as Mercedes, Lexus, etc. Man will it kill the market. As always Eric YOUR THE MAN THANKS!

Interesting that a couple years later it still has the same price. And now apparently even the reports are free? Idk just ordered one and will see. I downloaded the app and put in my VIN and it came right up with right vehicle info and all recalls. Seems pretty cool cant wait for the other half to arrive. Especially since I have a engine light on last week paid 500 for a shop to diagnose and fix a couple easy to get at sensors. Should of known better, never again!
this is very dated, i dont think theres in-app purchases anymore, just purchased one coming in tomorrow, i believe u get lifetime updates and u hav access to all functions and reports
Yeah, where might this technology be going. One day the police pull you over and scan your obd port/computer and find out exactly how fast you were going and whether you came to a complete stop at that traffic sign or not. Lol-not! Great review Eric.
Hi Chris. I'm buying this item. I have an check engine light on. In the next few months I'm practicing on my 2003 Saturn Ion plus all my neighbor's vehicles and my 98 Honda. However, as a slow-witted diy'er it may take ....time. As a technophobe it'll take longer. Since we are looking at a brutal 6 month winter here in Alberta I'll have some time. Thanks. David
i actually purchased the actron bluetooth scanner and am very pleased with it i purchased all the extras and it really helped alot the only thing i dont like is that on some 96 cars and trucks i cant access abs but other than that its a great tool
love ur video man - u rock but the most interesting feature is the "Repair Report" so a review of that would be like a advanced version of the BlueDriver Tool Review ha ha If you are outside of North America you have no use for Actron U-Scan Tool but BlueDriver Tool works here in Scandinavia - tnx - be safe
I'd say for a DIYer this is perfect. for bidirectional and deeper dealer level Checkout the maxisys pro. it's not. Cheap but if you work on different car lines it will help you a lot and its not 10k like a snapon verus. they even have a j2534 vcm so you can go to manufacturer sites and pay for software updates
Would have been nice to see actual codes conditions that this thing can show and even suggested fixes. I have used Bosch scanners at O'Reillys free test engine light check program and find them satisfactory. They are back to Innova which I don't care for as much. Disappointed that this tool starts charging you for reports after the first 5. The free check engine codes scheme is a great money maker for the auto stores as I have bought and replaced a small handful of sensors to get the car back right.
I have the torque app and a $25 dollar Bluetooth device. Works great. I actually just went out and bough a Scangauge too. Maybe you could get your hands on one of those, its really awesome.
I'd recommend a Wi-Fi version..guaranteed connectivity to idevice or android, plus larger wifi range. I can connect to mine w/Moto G from inside my house while my car is running in the driveway. Cheers Eric!
This is a nice gadget for vehicle owners, but by no means is it a proper scan tool. Just for example, the "live" data is simply repeated snapshots, and won't catch each little moment in time where many problems are found. Get one like this if you want to check codes and look at long term fuel trim, but not up to the job of a technician's tool.
Most of what you showed this app doing the Torque app can do, along with a $10 generic Bluetooth OBDII reader. I have not found an generic reader in the $5 to $20 range that will read the ABS codes or other systems though, ECM only. Looking up the code meanings and common fixes in the app is not a big deal to me, I've got my laptop in the garage to look up stuff and YT videos. Does this read codes from the transmission controller, the body controller, instrument panel controller, etc????? That's something I need, but I've been burned on some of those $80-$150 scan tools at the auto parts stores that can't do anything more than the $10 generic reader.

The comments where the Bluedriver is the same as the elm & torque are untrue. Try the Bluedriver & you will see the difference. It the difference between a Caddy & an Omni.
I have a 2002 Toyota Tundra with airbag light on and it didn't pick up any codes. I have a 2004 Mini Cooper S with air bag and check engine light and it didn't pick up any codes. I used another scanner for both vehicles and it picked up codes (02sensors bad for Mini Cooper and 02sensors/A/F mixture sensor bad on Tundra). I had not problems with the app or it connecting, it just didn't do the job. It gets a zero rating in my book.

have you checked Collision Sciences! They catch all the accidents on a vehicle - EVEN THE ONES NOT LISTED BY CARFAX - I had 3000 taken off the price on my car because it caught an accident that wasn't listed on the carfax! Totally worth looking at...would probably make an awesome video. Anyway...love your stuff Eric!

Thanks for your video, I am doing a research on vehicle diagnostic tools. I read the following "This handy gadget also performs pre-inspection emissions checking, and interprets the specialty codes for Detroit's big three automakers, BMW/Mini and Toyota vehicles; Nissan's codes are being added. It can count engine misfires on many newer cars, and reports can be saved as PDFs" about this BlueDriver scan tool. Question #1) Does the Detroit big 3 automaker include Ford or Mercury? #2) BMW/Mini codes - does this mean i can use this on a BMW E46? I have a 98 Mercury Mountaineer (very similar to an Explorer) & a 2000 BMW 323i and I am looking for the best single diagnostic scan tool for these cars? Preferably if they can read ABS info because in the past I've had ABS issues on both cars and will be good if the tool can diagnose common ABS troubles. Ideas?
bought this like 2 years ago when they were just coming out. it was 40 bucks with free shipping. best investment ever lol. (yes i am Canadian and when i saw it was also designed in Canada i jumped on it lol) also a trick, for viewing individual graphs without going and turning off features, double tap the data bar when you're in that nice list of live data. double tap on the one you'd like to see and it will go to a graph of just that one.
The blue driver scanner is the worst scanner I've ever used. First off, for most people it basically doesn't do much more than scanners a fraction of the price. 'read codes', c'mon, any scanner does that. 'erase codes', ditto. It does just what any other scanner does. The biggest issue I have with blue driver is that it often gives false information so you might think you're ready for a smog test and it fails. There are too many things to list here that I dislike but I'll mention that the first time using it, I got a p1445 code which I expected but when I inquired on more info, it sent me to this report form. ie. the app wanted me to report what I did to fix the code. What the fred, I didn't buy this to provide them with more info. And, though I entered the vin it kept pestering me for, there's like nothing in their database about my truck. So I asked their tech support and the guy responds with a lengthy description which I could get off the web. So I asked him why that info wasn't in their database and his response was, "well it's just not in our database". Look, I don't much care about useless 'tips' but I see and read these reviews touting this feature as if they tell you what to repair and it's just nonsense. As for features like 'live data' and mode 6, I've yet to see anyone actually use blue driver or compare to other scanners. What you get from other scanners is not the same that blue driver produces if you actually compare, which I've done with torque pro, and their not the same. It takes a long time to connect to the dongle. You have to repeatedly scan the ecu all the time and it drops connections constantly and you have to start over. It's a pos. The only thing I like about this scanner is that it will produce reports which you can save to a file, or email, or whatever. Handheld scanners typically don't have that feature. Also, unlike most scanners, they do offer tech support. You don't have to go on youtube or google to find out how their app works even though I think their tech support people don't know much about obd. But, torque is about $5 and the dongle I use with it, about $15 as opposed with todays price for bd, $120.
I wouldn't actually agree with that I bought a 15 dollar one it did alright for people that don't care or know much about cars but if your a car enthusiasts you found out real quick don't go cheap like that why I have hooked up the cheap ones and worked alright on some vehicles but as soon as I hooked it up to another car it became iffy and didn't correspond with the cars computer so couldn't read anything not even a simple check engine light this bluedriver on the other hand is good for your high end car guys and enthusiasts and mechanics picks up everything and every car with no problems like they say you get what you paid for when it comes to cars or anything you have passion forI caution do not cheap out or eventually somewhere down the road you will pay dearly for it.
I don't have a data package with my cellular phone provider, only talk and text on my Android device, can I download and run Blue Driver(or Torque Pro) strictly off my homes wifi? Thks.
I can't get mine to pair. That part in this review failed to disclose the techniques he used to finally pair his device. He also states he thought it had some thing to do with his phone. Why? What did he change, add or activate on his phone to fix the failed paring? As usual, the error states to check my settings on my phone. Check which settings? Give me a break.
Even better than using built-in Bluetooth to communicate with scan tools: just display error codes and probable fixes on the vehicle's built-in Nav screen. It's a shame scan tools are still necessary in 2014.
+Jesper Åhman it's not truly standardized though. sure, you can get some extremely basic codes from it, but every manufacturer has their own specific codes for different modules (transmission, ABS, airbags, etc) and you need higher end tools for those unfortunately. nice little loophole they exploited
There is a market for this item for sure. T people who go to youtube and search "How to torque down lug nuts" are not people who have $15,000 tools. Amateurs want to own nice things, not $12 items. Right or wrong they are who they are and eric is doing them a favor
Again, another app that charges for what you can get much cheaper. I'll stick with Torque and my $25 bluetooth adapter. It will search the web for code information without having to pay for it. Has even better graphs and cool analog-looking gauges. It is completely customizable; I have 5 screens of gauges ans status tables. You need to borrow someones Android phone and try torque with these devices.
Eric Chevrolet introduced the VIC or Vehicle Information Center some years ago. My 2009 Suburban has it. Originally you code program new Keyless Entry remotes with this. However, that option has disappeared. Do you know why? Apparently I’m not alone. Is there away to program Keyless entry remotes with paying the dealer? Thanks for all you do! JIMc
You fail to mention that Bluedriver only works with the big four automakers but not imports.So far it does NOT work on two Nissan's, one VW and one Toyota. Their support is no help. Have you done a review of any OBD scanners on which car makes AND models it is compatible with?

Is the app proprietary to to one specific vehicle per account? Or can many Additional vehicle’s be used and information stacked in memory of device or iPhone? I think I understand you say To Get more detail code information after 5 Free codes Trial with detailed information then one has to pay more money for additional codes read with the same quality information as 5 free trial codes? I bought the bluedriver scan tool but I'm 76 years old and find it a pain in the butt to get on my knees outside my civic 2003 1.7 L just to plug it in. Is it safe to connect a obd2 connecting cable to my obd2 socket to the reader without damaging my computer

Eric The Car Guy the O2 sensor data and wide range sensor data was not a glitch. There is a difference between an O2 sensor and an Air Fuel Ratio sensor( wide range) the data read correct. The wide range or Air Fuel Ratio sensor does not change like an O2 sensor does. The values will change very little and usually somewhere in the 3 volts range unlike an O2 which will change from approximately 0 to 1 volt. The reason why the signal may have looked switched may be cause the cat had not lit up yet allowing the rear O2 sensor to switch rather than staying in the .7mv range. Also the A/F ratio sensor will react opposite to rich/lean conditions compared to O2 sensors.
You can just leave the ODB reader plugged in all of the time while driving. It's not going to hurt anything and if a code is thrown you can clear it just sitting at a red light! BTW...this is the favorite tool for used car dealers and car auctions selling shit boxes. My suggestion is whenever going to look for a used car.....bring this with you ALWAYS! The only thing I wish it could do is see a history of codes that have been recently cleared out. It's a great thing to have...I have one and have used it extensively when purchasing used vehicles!
" if a code is thrown you can clear it just sitting at a red light! " you should deal with the problem that code is informing , not just try to erase it, besides it can be active code so you have to fix it before it clears itself.
Leaving your reader in will drain your battery
It dose not do any good to clear a code if the issue is not corrected the check engine light will just come back, and clearing a trouble code will not make your car pass smog anyway

I just purchased this as I was having issues with a 2007 grand Cherokee. And,esp, traction control, unit found a bad wheel sensor along with my backup module, ignition switch and dam near 15 recalls that never got handle. Also used it on a used car my daughter was looking at . It showed what codes had been cleared by the stealership. Well worth the price for the backyard mechanic like myself.
I have just purchased the BlueDriver, i must note that it will not provide transmission temperature for 2015 F150 3.5 turbo or 2017 Nissan Maxima. They have indicated to me that it will be available in the future.
I found out the same thing, trans temp does not exist on my 2009 Jeep Wrangler. I really like this scanner, I hope they update that soon, kind of a bummer other less expensive scanners have the trans temp available for my Jeep.
Purchased apps are gone. You get it all now when you download the app.
They listed to their customers who complained about having to buy additional or upgraded apps, so they added to the price of the product and gave it all right away. Much easier for the consumer.
I paid $100 for this and it has everything. It works great. This was a great decision as now you just download the app and go. I have it on 3 devices and my blue driver works with all of them. This means if I get a new phone, just download the app and it will work. A friend wants to borrow it, they download the app and they can use it too.
Live data is great! It doesn't support everything for every vehicle, however, it is getting continuously better as they update the app.
Mine has improved in the 6 mo that I have had it.
Customer support is great. That says a lot. They told me that they are continuously improving the product and I can expect to see this through updates in the software.
One of the troubles they have had has been through licensing from vehicle manufacturers. They have insured me that they are improving this and more is coming out.
Mode 6 is an area where I will see this. It's a little confusing now, but will get better as they obtain the liscenses to publish the information.
For $100, this unit gives you tons of information that was only available with a very expensive scan tool just a few years ago.
This is a true scan tool, not just a code reader.
Have read that other Co's. also have the problem with licensing of some factory data.
The issue is these cheap scanner mfg companies won't or can't pay what snap on, autel and the other high dollar scanner companies pay for licensing. The more they pay, the more info they get. For a $100 bt scanner, you won't get much info. Ford especially won't sell all of their secrets, not even to snap on. They want you to buy the Ford IDS scanner instead. When I purchased my Autel MS906, the licensing war was heated. I paid $1000 for it vs $10,000 for the snap on. My autel would do everything the snap on would do and perform better at some features. Then word about the licensing with Gm and Ford became inflamed and talking of lawsuits had me worried that Gm and Ford would pull the plug on Autel. In the end, I got lucky. With that said, these bt scanners are a great spare to keep in your vehicle. I have an el cheap elm bt scanner that stays in my vehicle that reads basic info, has live data, mode 6, graphing of sensors etc. I use it when seeing strangers broke down on the side of the road or my own if the cel lights up while I'm out and about.

An onboard computer would be nice, imagine instead of a scanner, a touch screen monitor in the dash,hidden behind a panel like the fuse blocks.

i do like the way you can layout the guages on the torque app better. Easier to read while driving.

I have a VXDAS Nexzscan in my vehicle: a 2007 Xterra.
I was driving one afternoon when the Check Engine Light came on. My scanner determined it was my gas cap. Not only was I able to diagnose, repair, dismiss the code, VXDAS Nexzscan offers a subscription for personal use.
It has features such as 40k DTC definition,retrieves generic,manufactures-specific and pending codes as well as vehicle information(VIN,CIN,CVN) .including the ABS/ Stabilitrak codes.and shows service intervals, what service is typically needed, average prices, and is able to find repair shops.
VXDAS Nexzscan can show some live data as well.
VXDAS Nexzscan cannot do a smog check nor show freezeframe data, but with my model year to fail a smog requires extreme wear in the exhaust or engine, which it has not come to.
I’d like to see a comparison of VXDAS Nexzscan and bluedriver, along side dealer-level or shop diagnostic tools for fairness.
Phone apps blew the bottom out of the market for point and shoot camera sales, and now they are working on the code scanner market. Of course the devil is in details, like complete data, live data graphing, upload speed, freezing screens, etc. But those kind of glitches seem to happen with all generic scanners, regardless of price. If I didn't already have a good scanner (autoenginuity), this would be worth a look.

I have a pro Autel, but also have a Bafx bluetooth el cheapo scanner as well. Nothing wrong with owning 2. I keep the el cheapo in my truck and the bi directional scanner in my shop.
This is the future of automotive diagnostics,because is a less cost with a huge capabilities people will stop paying 10.000$ for a Snap-on Verus,Blue Drive plus a good scope and you are done for the start.Sooner or latter all those expensive scanners will disappear because those little devices can give huge output for a small input cost so what's the point to pay 10.000$ for a scanner or another good one is getting a good diagnostic software for a laptop.Paying huge money for a fancy scanner and after two years fancy scanner is an old model.Information is a software that can be integrated in a smart phone,is only matter of time.
Real old video, but if anyone says 100 bucks is a ton, well it may be to most people who buy it, as they're trying to save money. But if you go and look in a code 4-5 times it's well worth it. Also if you are a type of person to go to your local Coffee shop each day and get a 3-4 dollar coffee...well don't do that for a month and it's paid or, or any other extra expenses. Anyways i just got mine ordered as i seen glowing reviews for the price point. Worst case you have an idea of how much it might be to get something fixed on your car and how serious it is.

Interesting that a couple years later it still has the same price. And now apparently even the reports are free? Idk just ordered one and will see. I downloaded the app and put in my VIN and it came right up with right vehicle info and all recalls. Seems pretty cool cant wait for the other half to arrive. Especially since I have a engine light on last week paid 500 for a shop to diagnose and fix a couple easy to get at sensors. Should of known better, never again!
this is very dated, i dont think theres in-app purchases anymore, just purchased one coming in tomorrow, i believe u get lifetime updates and u hav access to all functions and reports
Yeah, where might this technology be going. One day the police pull you over and scan your obd port/computer and find out exactly how fast you were going and whether you came to a complete stop at that traffic sign or not. Lol-not! Great review Eric.

What about if its showing no codes but I clearly have an issue with vibration will it find codes not listed
Hi Chris. I'm buying this item. I have an check engine light on. In the next few months I'm practicing on my 2003 Saturn Ion plus all my neighbor's vehicles and my 98 Honda. However, as a slow-witted diy'er it may take ....time. As a technophobe it'll take longer. Since we are looking at a brutal 6 month winter here in Alberta I'll have some time.

i actually purchased the actron bluetooth scanner and am very pleased with it i purchased all the extras and it really helped alot the only thing i dont like is that on some 96 cars and trucks i cant access abs but other than that its a great tool

If you are outside of North America you have no use for Actron U-Scan Tool but BlueDriver Tool works here in Scandinavia - tnx - be safe
I'd say for a DIYer this is perfect. for bidirectional and deeper dealer level Checkout the maxisys pro. it's not. Cheap but if you work on different car lines it will help you a lot and its not 10k like a snapon verus. they even have a j2534 vcm so you can go to manufacturer sites and pay for software updates

Not only is the app updatable - the sensor firmware is also updatable; which in EricTheCarGuy terms is "cool" or "neato"....
Would have been nice to see actual codes conditions that this thing can show and even suggested fixes. I have used Bosch scanners at O'Reillys free test engine light check program and find them satisfactory. They are back to Innova which I don't care for as much. Disappointed that this tool starts charging you for reports after the first 5. The free check engine codes scheme is a great money maker for the auto stores as I have bought and replaced a small handful of sensors to get the car back right.
I have the torque app and a $25 dollar Bluetooth device. Works great.
I actually just went out and bough a Scangauge too. Maybe you could get your hands on one of those, its really awesome.

If you like this you should have just gotten a blue tooth obd scanner for $3 at eBay and the Torque app for $5-8 on Apple and Android phones.
I'd recommend a Wi-Fi version..guaranteed connectivity to idevice or android, plus larger wifi range. I can connect to mine w/Moto G from inside my house while my car is running in the driveway. Cheers Eric!

This is a nice gadget for vehicle owners, but by no means is it a proper scan tool. Just for example, the "live" data is simply repeated snapshots, and won't catch each little moment in time where many problems are found. Get one like this if you want to check codes and look at long term fuel trim, but not up to the job of a technician's tool.
Most of what you showed this app doing the Torque app can do, along with a $10 generic Bluetooth OBDII reader. I have not found an generic reader in the $5 to $20 range that will read the ABS codes or other systems though, ECM only. Looking up the code meanings and common fixes in the app is not a big deal to me, I've got my laptop in the garage to look up stuff and YT videos.
Does this read codes from the transmission controller, the body controller, instrument panel controller, etc????? That's something I need, but I've been burned on some of those $80-$150 scan tools at the auto parts stores that can't do anything more than the $10 generic reader.

The comments where the Bluedriver is the same as the elm & torque are untrue. Try the Bluedriver & you will see the difference. It the difference between a Caddy & an Omni.
I used a Carly for BMW. Overall pretty satisfied, wish they have program in the e brake service mode into some of them.

I have a 2002 Toyota Tundra with airbag light on and it didn't pick up any codes. I have a 2004 Mini Cooper S with air bag and check engine light and it didn't pick up any codes. I used another scanner for both vehicles and it picked up codes (02sensors bad for Mini Cooper and 02sensors/A/F mixture sensor bad on Tundra). I had not problems with the app or it connecting, it just didn't do the job. It gets a zero rating in my book.

They catch all the accidents on a vehicle - EVEN THE ONES NOT LISTED BY CARFAX - I had 3000 taken off the price on my car because it caught an accident that wasn't listed on the carfax! Totally worth looking at...would probably make an awesome video. Anyway...love your stuff Eric!

It can count engine misfires on many newer cars, and reports can be saved as PDFs" about this BlueDriver scan tool. Question #1) Does the Detroit big 3 automaker include Ford or Mercury? #2) BMW/Mini codes - does this mean i can use this on a BMW E46? I have a 98 Mercury Mountaineer (very similar to an Explorer) & a 2000 BMW 323i and I am looking for the best single diagnostic scan tool for these cars? Preferably if they can read ABS info because in the past I've had ABS issues on both cars and will be good if the tool can diagnose common ABS troubles. Ideas?

also a trick, for viewing individual graphs without going and turning off features, double tap the data bar when you're in that nice list of live data. double tap on the one you'd like to see and it will go to a graph of just that one.
I tried it with my 98 Lexus LX470 and it couldn’t find it in their database. I’d wait till they get rid of the bugs before getting one.

The blue driver scanner is the worst scanner I've ever used. First off, for most people it basically doesn't do much more than scanners a fraction of the price. 'read codes', c'mon, any scanner does that. 'erase codes', ditto. It does just what any other scanner does. The biggest issue I have with blue driver is that it often gives false information so you might think you're ready for a smog test and it fails. There are too many things to list here that I dislike but I'll mention that the first time using it, I got a p1445 code which I expected but when I inquired on more info, it sent me to this report form. ie. the app wanted me to report what I did to fix the code. What the fred, I didn't buy this to provide them with more info. And, though I entered the vin it kept pestering me for, there's like nothing in their database about my truck. So I asked their tech support and the guy responds with a lengthy description which I could get off the web. So I asked him why that info wasn't in their database and his response was, "well it's just not in our database". Look, I don't much care about useless 'tips' but I see and read these reviews touting this feature as if they tell you what to repair and it's just nonsense. As for features like 'live data' and mode 6, I've yet to see anyone actually use blue driver or compare to other scanners. What you get from other scanners is not the same that blue driver produces if you actually compare, which I've done with torque pro, and their not the same. It takes a long time to connect to the dongle. You have to repeatedly scan the ecu all the time and it drops connections constantly and you have to start over. It's a pos. The only thing I like about this scanner is that it will produce reports which you can save to a file, or email, or whatever. Handheld scanners typically don't have that feature. Also, unlike most scanners, they do offer tech support. You don't have to go on youtube or google to find out how their app works even though I think their tech support people don't know much about obd. But, torque is about $5 and the dongle I use with it, about $15 as opposed with todays price for bd, $120.
I wouldn't actually agree with that I bought a 15 dollar one it did alright for people that don't care or know much about cars but if your a car enthusiasts you found out real quick don't go cheap like that why I have hooked up the cheap ones and worked alright on some vehicles but as soon as I hooked it up to another car it became iffy and didn't correspond with the cars computer so couldn't read anything not even a simple check engine light this bluedriver on the other hand is good for your high end car guys and enthusiasts and mechanics picks up everything and every car with no problems like they say you get what you paid for when it comes to cars or anything you have passion forI caution do not cheap out or eventually somewhere down the road you will pay dearly for it.
I don't have a data package with my cellular phone provider, only talk and text on my Android device, can I download and run Blue Driver(or Torque Pro) strictly off my homes wifi? Thks.

I can't get mine to pair. That part in this review failed to disclose the techniques he used to finally pair his device. He also states he thought it had some thing to do with his phone. Why? What did he change, add or activate on his phone to fix the failed paring? As usual, the error states to check my settings on my phone. Check which settings? Give me a break.
Even better than using built-in Bluetooth to communicate with scan tools: just display error codes and probable fixes on the vehicle's built-in Nav screen. It's a shame scan tools are still necessary in 2014.
Manufacturers don't want amateurs to fix cars, so they make special tools necessary. We should be thankful that OBD is standardized.

+Jesper Åhman it's not truly standardized though. sure, you can get some extremely basic codes from it, but every manufacturer has their own specific codes for different modules (transmission, ABS, airbags, etc) and you need higher end tools for those unfortunately. nice little loophole they exploited
There is a market for this item for sure. T people who go to youtube and search "How to torque down lug nuts" are not people who have $15,000 tools. Amateurs want to own nice things, not $12 items. Right or wrong they are who they are and eric is doing them a favor
Again, another app that charges for what you can get much cheaper.
I'll stick with Torque and my $25 bluetooth adapter. It will search the web for code information without having to pay for it. Has even better graphs and cool analog-looking gauges. It is completely customizable; I have 5 screens of gauges ans status tables.
You need to borrow someones Android phone and try torque with these devices.

Chevrolet introduced the VIC or Vehicle Information Center some years ago. My 2009 Suburban has it. Originally you code program new Keyless Entry remotes with this. However, that option has disappeared.
Do you know why? Apparently I’m not alone. Is there away to program Keyless entry remotes with paying the dealer?

You fail to mention that Bluedriver only works with the big four automakers but not imports.So far it does NOT work on two Nissan's, one VW and one Toyota. Their support is no help.

No Repair Reports in Europe, so pretty useless here compared to a good ELM327 with Torque or maybe a Jdiag Faslink M2.

I bought the bluedriver scan tool but I'm 76 years old and find it a pain in the butt to get on my knees outside my civic 2003 1.7 L just to plug it in. Is it safe to connect a obd2 connecting cable to my obd2 socket to the reader without damaging my computer

Find a cheap ebay elm327 scanner that works and the torque pro app and they will do more or less the same things as this but for a lot less money.
