I have discovered that i like creating designs for t shirts, hoodies etc. After a few years of feeling stuck in what i wanted to do, i have found something that i enjoy doing. This video has been life changing for me. After years of dealing with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia and not being able to work, THIS is something i know i can do, so thank you again for this video.
Hey, John. This is super super great. You know how they say that when you want something so much, the whole universe conspire to bring it before you? That's the experience here for me. I have just been brooding over a desire I have nursed for the longest time about starting a minimalist fashion brand, and just recently I decided to be more actionable about it. I have had back-and-forth meetings with a designer to come up with unique designs that'll immediately resonate with a potential customer. And now I bumped into this. And it simplifies out a rather tedious process of cut-to-finish-to-fulfilment. Great stuff! However, I'm from Nigeria and one of the challenges I find, especially with T-shirts makers here is fabric quality, and there is no real education readily available that gets out useful information that aspiring fashion influencers or clothe makers can setup with. Would you mind sharing a little on the fabric quality one could get via this process. Thanks so much, Champ.
John, you are a true professional. So great to work with you to make this information available to entrepreneurs and those interested in creating their own clothing lines . Giving people a path to get started and grow their own business or personal passion projects is such a great way to pay it forward.

As a fashion designer who went to design school and have 20 yrs of experience working in the garment district in LA, I must say this information is misleading to say the least. Don’t do a disservice to people and mentally set them up for failure by telling them this costs nothing. What you are preaching costs money and experience, and if you don’t have experience you have to pay someone who has experience to get the job done. -This is not a cut and sew clothing line but a pre-made t-shirt line, there’s a huge difference. I’m assuming you need to make samples in order to sell the t-shirts right? That costs money, especially if your t-shirt supplier has minimums which you can’t meet. -Who is creating your artwork? If you don’t have experience, you need a graphic artist whose has production experience. Mistakes can cost you lots of money and will put you out of business if you’re not mindful. -What about design? How would one know how to design a cohesive collection and stay relevant with the constant change of market trends? -What about costing and labor prices? You have to have competitive pricing in order to sell to the right demographic, or that’s the end of your business. -Shopify costs money also. I understand you’re outsourcing and using a production factory to keeping your overhead to a minimum, which is the best way to go.... but don’t mislead people into thinking it doesn’t cost money. It costs money, lots of it sometimes...and if you have no experience you will get hoodwinked like a sucka! The fashion industry is a very dirty and cut throat industry to work in, and most people don’t survive.
@@alistory518 It depends on what you consider a small investment. The title clearly states "How To Start A Clothing Line With $0 Dollars", not "How To Start A Clothing Line With A Pretty Small Investment" and you're an artist because of your God given talent. I started with DTG John is right I took preorders which gave me money upfront. BIG KEY PLEASE DO NOT SPEND THE PREORDER MONEY. Sounds logical but I have seen people spend some of the money and didnt pay to get all the shirts that were preordered made. Do your homework see what the DTG company charges for the type of shirt you want to use and now take that figure and subtract it from whatever your retail price is for your shirt design the difference left is what profit is. John is 1000% spot on with this video and DTG print to order is a great way to start. Always order yourself a sample so you can quality check it. REMEBER your customer think this is coing from you so you want to make sure that its a good shirt. Once you are comfortable you dont have to do that anymore Other advise : Treat it like a business meaning do the accounting stay organized and never share your resources or who, how much and how your goods are made with your customers. Give realistic turnarounds. You have to set a real expectation of when they might receive it after they order. If your DTG service provider says it takes 7 days then tell your customer please allow 7-10 business days for processing and shipping. Do not say days say "business days". Next, sell outside of your friends and family. 99.99% of all of my customers are strangers and that's great. Do not go into this expecting your friends to support you just because they are friends because you will get your feelings hurt. If friends and family purchase great if they dont also great use that as motivation. Last thing give EXCELLENT customer service. If there is an issue like the provider tells you there is gonna be a delay. Immediately let your customer know that the shirts I use are on backorder and it may be a few extra days. Apologize and maybe give a percentage off on the next shirt. John great video but I want you to give an example of what the cost was to have the shirt made along with what you planned to retail it for so the viewers can get an idea of what "profit looks" like
Many thanks John, taking the time to break it down step by step. I had thought of screen printing, but the way you have walked us all through this process is far easier than going at it alone! 👍 I will put time into watching a video or re-watching it a few times with pen and paper in hand to get it all committed to memory. AWESOME video it seems so scary when you don't know where to start, this video just made my process much smoother. Thanks so much for creating video you rock!
Based on this vid and the explanation. You would need less than $100 to start, so as far as business, it's as close to $0 as you can get. What's going to cost? The shopify subscription is about $30 monthly and may get discount as a first time subscriber. The designs and quotes will cost, you can get that done on Fiverr for $5 and they got packages. Then you have to market your store on Facebook ads etc.

The problem with that platform John is, you can't control the quality ! I've tried Print on Demand with Printful and Printify, they all did not meet my quality, nor anyone else's that saw the sample shirts I ordered. You know what Print on Demand does, it ruins well thought out brand names. I would rather print the shirts at my local screen printer, because they know I won't accept the shirt if it's not right. Printify's excuse was we print over 15k shirts everyday. No wonder there is no quality ! I will check out Apliiq, but I don't have my hopes up. Because when you let someone fulfill your products, they don't look at the quality much, all they care about is the volume of orders. I have had Printful resend the same shirt 4 times, and they still didn't meet my standard, after 4 washes, the print is already flaking. And I have been a subscriber to your channel.
chaison badajos I completely understand that as well! With volume a lot of places tend to skimp on quality. But what I found super interesting was the fact that all the workers there were artists, and cared about the craft. I plugged our new products into the platform, use code: RUclips at checkout if you’d like to see how they come out and get shipped to your door: bit.ly/Revive-BrandCo
@@johnxsantos thank you for the code, but I think I will pass, $34 USD for a shirt, wow ! I was having trouble marketing my tshirts at $35 CAD. I guess the moral of my story is I'll stick to what I know works for me, start modest while I build my brand, I know that every shirt that goes out, has been folded and inspected by me. So if my brand fails it's on me and I can't blame the fulfillment centers. Maybe I will visit those guys you talked about Omniprint dtg if my budget gets up there. As always thank you for the video and the value it brings to our industry.
The main problem with POD is the cost. The quality can be widely variable. I have my own DTG printer and am fully aware of the costs. It is far more expensive to run my printer per print, which is a DTG M2 so not exactly a poor quality cheap piece of kit, than it is a Kornit which the POD companies use. The Kornit printers are much faster and house the pre treatment process internally. They do however have a significant investment in initial cost. BUT the cost to print one shirt is less than $1.5 plus the cost of the shirt and that includes the overheads. In the UK the cheapest POD is about £6 + vat a print plus the cost of the shirt which means by the time its posted etc you are laying out around £12 - £15 per shirt. For a start up brand that is tough when you consider what you can retail for. If you look at the price of established brands in the shops they are selling Ts for about £15 - £20. Not much of a mark up. Also if you think of retailing through small boutiques they will want at least a 50% markup. If you think you are going to be selling shirts at £/$30 then take a deep breath. T shirt design that sells is not so much about having fantastic graphics but more about the image surrounding the brand. Not saying it isn't possible as people claim to be making money with Shopify and other platforms but I doubt its the norm. If you run a normal DTG printer ( not a Kornit ) then the process itself is not the best for retail garments as the heat press leaves a shiny box around the print. It is possible to remove it but once again it is more time and cost. Please do your research before jumping in. It may not cost you a lot of money to start but its the time you lose thats the killer.
It's a completely valid concern, and no one can ever knock creating your own products or wanting to be extremely hands on in the production of your products to ensure quality. Anyone that tells you a print on demand company never makes a mistake or has a quality issue is lying to you, but you know what? The same goes for your local screen printing shop. The key thing to focus on is whether the partner you pick is willing to make it right for the customer when mistakes do happen and take steps to ensure quality is on point in a process of continual process improvement. We have found that creating one sample is always best, it let's the brand owner see and feel the quality for themselves or take any corrective action needed BEFORE products go to customers (this is one of the key quality advantages over the local print shop, who will want you to hit the MOQ for each job). What makes Apliiq different than most POD services is offering the elements that other POD and most local print shops don't do; relabeling and sewing in woven labels to produce a higher quality product from the get go. What anyone will find as a clothing line scales is you can't check every product or package yourself and you will need to find employees or partners that you can trust. There is no escaping it if you want it to grow. If you want to keep it your brand small, it's fine to do it all yourself (see the first line of this reply).
This is one of the best videos I have watched on any subject online. I have been thinking about starting my own clothing brand for a few months now. And this video fills-in the knowledge gaps I had. It helped me form the complete idea in my head and prepared me for the next steps. Question: Are there any consultants or pros who can help me with the prep work, such as finalizing the product design, logo, shopify setup and the manufacturer in LA who will do the fulfillment. I have everything planned in my head and have the idea and some design work for the products. Also setting up the social media pages etc. Due to some obligations relating to work and personal, it's taking me too long to start up. Thanks

Apliiq rocks... i am starting my clothing brand but im from the Philippines. is there any chance i can do business with you guys?

If you guys are struggling with the financial half of business I would suggest the book: PROFIT FIRST
Yes that book is 🔥🔥🔥
Hey Kevin! Thanks for the comment. However, what is the book about and how did it help you?
@@shakenbake9683PROFIT FIRST is a book were Mike Michalowics explains his counter intuitive cash management system which reveals why the traditional accounting formula (Sales minus expenses = profit) this book flips the method and shows how you can use this to make your business serve you using the new formula (sales minus profit = expenses) And as for how this has helped me I'm a highschool freshman that is in the first steps to developing an e commerce web site that is set to launch when I graduate. @@ilir7140 I guess not
As a fashion designer who went to design school and have 20 yrs of experience working in the garment district in LA, I must say this information is misleading to say the least.
The fashion industry is a very dirty and cut throat industry to work in, and most people don’t survive.
true but this is pretty small investment if you are basically talented in art design I really enjoyed all the information
Jasmine Oganesyan what’s your contact information
@@alistory518 It depends on what you consider a small investment. The title clearly states "How To Start A Clothing Line With $0 Dollars", not "How To Start A Clothing Line With A Pretty Small Investment" and you're an artist because of your God given talent. Keep in mind that "most" creatives are shitty sales people that can't sell water to a whale. There are exceptions to the game in everything in life, and I never said he didn't give valuable nuggets of info, if you're a rookie. I wish you much luck and success in your endeavors. Cheers!

I like it. I heard about drop shipping and I have idea about this. But this video is very detailed thanks john for this video.
Thank you for watching my friend. Appreciate the support! Make sure you checkout the notes below the video for additional resources and information. 🙏🏽
Prior to my workout goals.

Thanks for this video second time watching as am going over the information will difintely be doing the master class soon .
To all of you who are asking about the equipment, your first gonna design your products, upload them to the internet and they're gonna make them and ship them for you , once you have sell enough of your brand you have enough money you can buy the equipment and make them yourself
AWESOME video it seems so scary when you don't know where to start, this video just made my process much smoother. Thanks so much for creating video you rock!
So all in all, you still need some money to start IMO.
Like I said, you could start with close to $0 but yes you will need some funding to grow.
You need to have friends who have the supply. :)

That’s great at the same time you could have it printed on the shirt as well on the outside and avoid the label anyone could cut off the label
Yes, the printed label is just to provide a quick example of how one could go about giving there brand a cut n' sew feel. Woven labels are are a better alternative to give that feel.

@@19kickboxer68 like I said no to POD, though enticing, not worth it for the image and reputation of your private label.
If you want to keep it your brand small, it's fine to do it all yourself (see the first line of this reply).
what about if you dont want a plain t-shirt but you want the t-shirt to have a custom cut?
This is sooo helpful. Loved the video. Well done.
