I fully understand and sympathize with the struggle. I've been there before, also. I'm glad to hear this helped you out. Happy fishing, and thank you for watching!
I’ve hated my new I-pilot because of the overcorrection. Thank you so much. I just walked out to the boat and changed the settings in less than 60 seconds. Can’t wait to hit the water and try it out!!!
Exactly. I had a Terrova on my older boat since 2018 and never had a problem. This one is brand new on a new boat and thought it was defective. Your tip corrected the problem on my next trip out. Thanks again! Rick
Yours is the first ipilot video i've seen that SHOWS THE BUTTONS TO PUSH. THANK YOU for taking your time with your presentation. Great format, you just earned a new subscriber.
Thank you SO MUCH! I was having a problem with keeping my boat straight for crappie longlining trolling and my lines were getting tangled up while the autopilot was engaged. Thank God for you, I was able to change my Minn Kota Terrova autopilot mode from advance to legacy following your God sent tips. Hopefully, this will solve my crappie longlining trolling woes. God bless you and your family!
I've always wondered what that advanced or legacy mode was for. You made it very clear, and I found through your video that I would more than likely prefer the legacy mode. I had it in the advanced mode and was experiencing abrupt changes when drifting which was very aggravating to me. Thank you so much for your video. Keep them kayaking buddy
used legacy mode on the Detroit river. 15 Knot current. just to keep the boat facing north. then it was just speed. still challenging... But makes jig control doable... great video.
This is the video I needed. Fighting wind, heavy tides, and boat chop had mine all confused. Manual steering was fine. This is going to fix it I am sure! Thank you.
Excellent video and I have a quick question please. I plan to install a bow mounted Minnkota trolling motor on the back or stern of my boat. It will not fit in the front with my rail and other stuff. My question is, if the trolling motor turns left, the boat will go right, and if the motor goes right, the boat will go left. But if you are following a recorded track or set your ipilot to take you to a waypoint, would the trolling motor adjust the boats direction to take you to your spot? Would a heading sensor help at all in this regard?
Just switched mine to legacy couple trips ago and working on a video for it. You beat me to it!! I prefer the legacy mode as well it is also much quieter on that setting.
Great video. That explains a lot of things when fishing in the wind and my motor started doing crazy things. I will change that setting and it should help out. Thanks
Thank You very much for this video. I didn't need the advance/Legacy but now I know how to get in the thing. I was missing the Check mark is the enter button. But now I can use the advance /Legacy to better track my boat.
Just saw your video. Can’t wait to try this out on the Detroit river. Just upgraded from a Terrova to an Ulterra. Last 2 trips, boat was going everywhere. Thought it might be the gps puck. I know it had the arrow with lines on the side. I just switched it to Legacy mode.
Thanks, just upgraded from Power Drive to Terrova and wondered why Autopilot seemed so much different. Will give Legacy a try and see if it feels more “normal”. I assume it operates like the old Power Drive.
I'm interested in learning "what benefit if any" is there for using the "Advanced" Mode ? It doesn't seem to be of much use UNLESS there is No Wind and/or you must stay on a specific line to navigate to where you are going. Can someone please tell me if there are any specific benefits to using the Advanced Mode ? Thanks in Advance. PS> Thank you The Weekend Angler for this short, concise video that clearly and easily defines the difference between these two modes and the advantage of using Legacy Mode.
You're not kidding. I've used the copilot remote for several years and had convinced myself that I didn't need I pilot. It's a total game changer once you start learning all the things you can do with it. Tight lines!
Two things to add: 1) If you program your remote without turning your motor on it will appear to work but when you turn your motor on it will go back to the previous setting the next time you power your motor on. You MUST turn your motor on before changing the setting. 2) To tell which mode you are currently in look at the screen of your remote while underway. If you see an "N" with an arrow under it you are in Legacy mode. if you see an "|N|" and an arrow with lines on both sides you are in Advanced mode.
I wonder if there is a more immediate and temporary way to disengage the auto pilot and set it to legacy while in the middle of an iTrack? We have ice right now, or I'd be testing this myself. This has been an issue for me in higher winds on the lake before. Thanks for the info. It's the first I've heard of it before. I made a video on how to launch my boat with my iPilot remote and Ulterra, but I wouldn't have known about his fix. It's never been a big issue, but I could see it on a river moreso.
I noticed that when I'm on an iTrack, the rear of the boat tends to get blown around more. When I get to the end of the track and continue on the heading autopilot has me going toward, the boat's rear end will definitely straighten out instantly if I recall it correctly. So maybe in iTrack it uses the latest version of autopilot and on a course heading, it is set to "legacy" already for my Minn Kota.
Here's my scenario: no wind, in legacy autopilot, cruise control set 1.4mph. I found at times when I'd use my left or right adjustment keys it would cause the motor to speed up rapidly to say 1.8 before settling back down after a minute or so. It wouldn't do it all the time just every now and then. I wonder if this is normal. It did it with essentially no wind or very little wind.
This drove me nuts as well until I found out there was a legacy mode. Advanced is ok if trolling at high speed but not at the speeds we do for catfish.
Great video do either of these modes require a gps puck? Currently have i-Pilot on my kayak. It’s over correcting so I’d like it to calm down. Thanks in advance just subscribed I’m also a content Creator here on you tube? Feel free to Check out
No, both modes can function without the GPS Puck. What the Puck does is enable a feature called spot lock jog. I actually have a Puck that I need to install and will be doing a video to explain the jog feature once I do.
After three years of fighting Auto-pilot you gave me what I needed in a consise easy to understand demonstration. THANK YOU!
I fully understand and sympathize with the struggle. I've been there before, also. I'm glad to hear this helped you out. Happy fishing, and thank you for watching!

I definitely feel your pain. I was ready to pull mine off the boat before I changed this setting. I'm glad it helped you out.
Great tip! Solved my erratic steering instantly by changing to the Legacy mode.
Awesome! I'm glad it helped you out. It was driving me nuts when mine was doing it so I feel your pain.

Thank you, that advanced cruise was driving me nuts!

Just did this while trolling for cats right now ! Ty!! Subbed!
Simple. To the point. Thx for the video
Thanks you really help me out I'm just starting out with the I polt motor I will keep watching you to I learn how to use it
Thanks! I've actually got a few more I pilot videos in the works to be out in the near future.
It's very helpful video! Thanks!
Great explanation
Thanks!

VERY helpful....thank you!
Thanks. I just ordered mine and will be mostly trolling in lake Erie or Detroit river. Important info.
Great video. That explains a lot of things when fishing in the wind and my motor started doing crazy things. I will change that setting and it should help out. Thanks
Thank you for your quick response.
Good to know, will def try this next trip cheers

Thank you so much brother!
You are quite welcome I'm glad it helped
Wow, it helps a lot for me
Excellent video. Thanks
Thank you!
Cheers on the video. I'd like to know how to use manual adjustments, particularly for river fishing.
I can do that for you. I will have that out in an upcoming video real soon

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who uses the advanced mode as well.
Another great tip Josh
Thanks, Lyle!
You nailed it, great video!!!
Just picked up the minn Kota terrova today
Awesome bro!! I love this t motor!! It feels like cheating lol Tight lines my friend, grest video!

Thanks for sharing👍
Ma sha Allah. Alhamdulillah.

Legacy is the only choice... autopilot blows unless there is zero wind and current... thanks for the explanation.

Great Info Josh!
Should the I-pilot be in advanced or legacy mode when following contour?
Advanced would probably be better when following contours
Just got a new remote and forgot about legacy mode, just switched it
Gonna have to try this out. I didn't know they had more than one
nice job Josh👍
I was trying to link it to a hummingbird helix 9 but can't seem to even pull up the graphs
Perfect
How do you get the LOCKED mode off
This drove me nuts as well until I found out there was a legacy mode. Advanced is ok if trolling at high speed but not at the speeds we do for catfish.
Hello, how to do this without big remote ?
I'm really not sure it can be done without the big remote. Possibly using the smartphone app.
Thanks .
It had two services under warranty third will be on me
