    I bought one, thinking that I would use it for local travel and the wife’s Mercedes on road trips. After one trip driving the Mercedes, I upgraded the soft to 60 and added supercharging. The car now has 86000 miles.

    Thank you for this history on the 40kwh. I reserved one of these in 2011, and it was delivered May, 2013. My wife and I still have this car and she drives it daily. She is always correcting Facebook groups when this car gets mentioned because they are usually wrong regarding the story. Our car has 78k miles on it and charges to 128 miles. The last time it was at a service center, the advisor led me to believe there were less than 20 remaining. I often joke that i will never upgrade the car until Elon comes to my door and says " you are the last one, give it up already".

    What a great trip down memory lane! I started working at Tesla in 2011, and I've seen one of these cars in the wild and spoke to the owners, it was great because they were huge fans! I made many of the very early production rotors, and I made the rotor in the display at the 7:10 mark!

I loveeeeee it!! It’s super quiet too. I love how the glass is all around the car, and it looks good too. Autopilot is so cool, I’m so glad we got the full self driving feature. My favorite part is navigate on autopilot, because it will go where you want to go.

Our journey officially started in 2012 with the order of an 85s Model S. Trading in as we go, then to a Model 3 (I’ve been able to break even on each one), and we’re now on our third Tesla, a Model Y. It’s been a fantastic ride.

    Was at the Tesla Model S debut. When the car finally starred delivering we could only afford the 40KW car at $49.5K. After 3 years we upgraded to a 75D since we had moved and needed more range to get to work. There was only two public places to charge on the commute route and it got old hoping they would be empty and sitting there for an hour+ to get the extra 30 miles to get all the way home. As you may know the 40 was just a detuned 60kW S but to add the range and Supercharging turned on it was a simple phone call and a CC charge of $12K! So we opted to upgrade the whole car to get much more range, a refreshed facia, 8 cameras ect ect.. It was worth the addental $17k and bigger payments. The only reason Tesla even made the 40kW car was because they said the would male a car for under 50K and had to be true to their word.
    As the the value of such a RARE tesla with only 700 of them made (that was the count we were told at the time) the value was not realizable. It was all software. Selling the car back to Tesla they would flip it back to the used market as a 60kW with Supercharging. Free money. It's not like you could store the car in a barn for 30 years waiting for it to sell at a million dollars. The 2500 Roadsters will get there faster. Buy the way, Tesla is buying used Roadsters and and parting them out for owners who need to keep them on the road. So maybe only 2000 left...

    So I guess this sort of depends on what you consider to be "rare". These are rare in that they actually exist, but if you look at the planned Standard Interior Model 3 (which was going to be the $35,000 version), one could argue that a prototype of that interior would be even rarer (it never made it to production, as all SR orders were just software-limited SR+ cars physically)
    ;)

    The 40Kw battery was a software limited, it has a larger battery, you just pay more to get more range.

    There is one 40kw Tesla selling for $21k with 57k miles close by, do you guys think its a good deal?

    • @ItsKimJava
      @ItsKimJava  Год назад +1

      Not a bad deal. It’s software locked at 40 (actually a 60 battery pack) so it has never been charged to 100%.
      I’d check it out and though you’d be out of a warranty, that mileage is super low.

    I bet all those people which teased tesla now drive a tesla, they were quick to judge they should have waited to see what tesla can do look at them now embarrassed and ashamed of what they said about TESLA now that it has succeeded

    If you couldn't afford that cheap Tesla in 2012 and you invested half it's cost into Tesla stock it would now be worth around $3 million.

    "VW, Audi, Porshe, GM etc. are coming with 300+ miles EVs" It was 8 years since that guys said that. And they haven't done it yet. Really sad. Tesla is at 402 miles of range and we are just waiting for those 4680 cells.

    I think it would be a nice gesture for Tesla to offer the older Model S from that time, a chance to update to 60kWh for free...for beign early adopters.

  • @kasmopaya2676

    First of all, top content Kim, very interesting and a healthy new year.
    I am not surprised that nobody wanted an "affordable" 50.000$ EV, because it's not a Tesla. It's a like any other car without Supercharger support, only with the Superchargers it becomes a true Tesla. Like Elon said, a bad product, and he was right.
    Was the Supercharger support granted if you upgrade to 60 kWh software unlock? I am guessing yes.

    • @davidreidenberg9941
      @davidreidenberg9941 3 года назад

      Well I don’t know about that. I have a New model 3 and have not once used a supercharger.

  • @strykerace
    @strykerace 3 года назад

    Or maybe it was successful. Even though the 40kW model wasn't technically delivered it was Tesla first attempt to have simple and easy upgrade packages that the growing legions of Tesla owners love.
