since I was a little kid i've been OBSESSED with alice in wonderland. half of my bookshelf is different adaptations or publishings of it and I have ridiculous amounts of dvds of different film adaptations of it. Glad this video found its niche! my favorite film adaptation is the 1972 live action (the second one shown in the video)
YES!!! You're Discussing the Adult Musical!!!! You are now my favorite person!!! Nobody knows about it, nobody talks about it and it's just... A wild ride 😂! I shoulda bet my husband, I woulda won! Thanks for that!
Jan Svankmajer’s Alice is probably one of my favorite adaptations, mostly because it’s just one of the more unique and interesting takes I’ve seen. There’s only so many times you can hear people in costumes recite the book word for word before it gets boring, while the stop motion film gives it a completely different tone and atmosphere. Though the 99’ film looks pretty interesting. Had no idea Gene Wilder was in one of these! It seems like he was born to play a Wonderland character lol
When I first saw Jan's Alice I thought it would be just a short film with creepy alice inspired imagery. I aprpeciate how the film really fully commits to the weirdness in unique and surprising ways. Good film to turn on and just zone out to and appreciate the insanity.
You shouldn't have mentioned a movie or any kind of media that's not american and that's weirder than Transformers. As you see, it only confuses muricans.
Probably my fav Mad Tea Party is the one they did on the Muppet Show. Brooke Shields plays Alice and it starts out "normally" enough, though the Dormouse is played by a chicken. Things "start" to get weird when the Tweedles (Statler and Waldorf) just show up. Kermit runs in, claiming the party's gone too far. Brooke suggests they sing a song. Cue Fozzie as the Tin Man starting a rendition of "We're Off to See the Wizard". Why was Fozzie dressed as the Tin Man? He thought they were doing Peter Pan. Yeah, this episode is nuts and I love it.
I recently got a hardcover copy of Alice in Wonderland from the Tate museum featuring the illustrations of Finnish artist Tove Jansson (the creator of the Moomins) and, to be honest, they made me enjoy the story even more than Tenniel’s creepy original ones. Jansson’s artwork and style is so soft and whimsical, and her Alice illustrations gave the story a feminine and childlike tone I had never even imagined before. I would love to see a film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland that takes inspiration from Jansson’s depictions of the characters and has the same flavor as one of the many adaptations of the Moomin books and comics. I remember seeing a short adaptation of Alice in Wonderland made by Rankin/Bass as a part of their Festival of Family Classics series (which was animated in a very similar style to Frosty the Snowman) and I absolutely loved the colorful aesthetic and cute character designs, even though they were unfitting for the original story’s tone.
Jan Svenkmeyer's Alice and the one with Martin Short are my favorite adaptations. Theyre both so creative and fun. You cant go wrong with creepy stop motion and jim henson puppets
3:49 - Maybe because Alice is British. Still my favourite version. This is the true Alice that americans don’t care about - they think tim burton did “good”.
As an American, 85 is actually my introduction to Alice. I was born in 86, but my childhood was also the Disney vault era with parents who wouldn't pay for Disney Channel. I do like 51 for the aesthetic and the nightmare fuel perfection that is 88's Alice. I've never seen the 86 one, but F Tim Burtons versions. They are absolutely awful.
I didn't know there were this many adaptations. Fun fact about the psychedelic stuff, I actually watched the Disney adaptation (which was the first time I even seen anything from AIW) while I had my first psychedelic trip. Anyways, some of these look pretty interesting and worthwhile of checking out, so thanks for this video. However, I wouldn't have been mad if you left out the... NSFW version
5:50 I get the feeling that this movie REALLY wanted to be the live-action equivalent to 1939's "The Wizard of Oz". 7:50 Alas the same fate befell Puff the Magic Dragon. Can nothing be left wholesome and untainted? :/ 15:10 That's because Disney did it in theirs and everybody just has to copy Disney.
You remember the 90s TV on the Disney Channel. Alice in Wonderland. I use to love that show with the Queen being black and also the crazy twins being black.
Burtons version would have had so much potential if he hadn't been hamstrung by Disney's need to micromanage their directors. Tim Burton said that working for Disney was the worst experience of his career
I think it would be interesting if someone actually did another proper adaptation where Tim Burtons c r a p films will be forgotten and americans will know the true story. It’s about the hoy of being a kid and that’s the soul of it.
@@alegendamongmen I can understand OPs feeling. When I was a teen I remember really wishing there was a scary Oz or Alice. The older I get the more I started to appreciate the source material and original vision. Alice is so weird, it doesn't really need to be horror and when people try it often loses its soul in the process. Plus, this has already been attempted in various types of media like American McGee's Alice. If you really want horror versions, like in the video or Kim Jong Il said, just watch the Czech Alice or Return to Oz. They're both pretty demented in their own ways(Return to Oz, the Hall of Heads, Dorothy receiving electroshock therapy, etc.)
they technically have. i’ll have to look up the name but i remember there being some very strange slasher version of it that i watched during my phase of binging everything alice related.
You should check out the French TV movie adaptation from 1970, it's honestly one of my favorite ones! It has no English dub and the subtitles on RUclips aren't perfect, but it's still surprisingly easy to find and watch right here on YT! The entire thing was filmed on blue screen, which was practically unheard of in 1970 (now of course that's pretty much standard) so the visuals of Wonderland are perfectly surreal, the music is also great and adds to the weirdness of it. It's not perfect as a movie in general, but as an AIW adaptation, it's great!
I heard of one Natalie G. I can recall her last name. And I that is her 1st name. But i have that on dvd. I remember watching it on tv yrs ago. And i remember seeing it yrs ago and buying it on dvd. I always been a fan of Alice Wonderland.
Here’s my idea for your have you ever heard of series. Do the Sleeping beauty all of them that you can find including the curse of sleeping beauty if you can. Keep up the great work.
It sounds like he may have what’s called Autism. I have it myself, and people say that I can be quite monotonous. Ironically, people speculate that Lewis Carrol had autism as well, and that much of the Wonderland story can serve as a metaphor for autistic experiences, whether intentional or not.
Was the disney Adventures in Wonderland live action series not worth mentioning here? I loved it as a kid. And also, syfy channel's made-for-tv take right before Burton's hit theaters was pretty creative
My favorite has always been the 1999 version, my family got it from a cereal box. Anybody else remember that? Cereal prize disks? That's also where we got our copy of spy kids and I think a pajama Sam game.
Good presentation. I have the animated Disney film as well as the Seventies porn version. Certainly makes for an interesting double feature! I also have “Dreamchild,” which includes moments inspired by the books as the elderly Alice Hargreaves (nee Liddell) reflects back on her childhood friendship with Lewis Carroll. I’m a bit surprised that you’re not familiar with some of actors in the 1985 version (Martha Raye, Anthony Newley, Steve Allen, Merv Griffin, married singing team Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme), but I’m much older than you. BTW, I have that annotated edition of the books and a Carroll biography that provided a lot of interesting background information on one of our favorite authors. I also have a beautiful book by Catherine Nichols titled “Alice’s Wonderland” that covers nearly everything Alice, at least up to that point. I’ve seen Jan Svankmajer’s version and would like to get it on DVD someday. That’ll probably be it for me.
My favorite is the made for TV version that had the most star studded cast for the 90s, kikenits crazy ot wss only a TV movie. It's probably one of the most faithful adaptations of Alice and through the looking glass
Hello. So me and my younger sister are looking for particular alice in wonderland. Now we were poor when we were children and we had seen one that the movie we are looking for was on the afternoon TV channels it was long before sky TV was everywhere. So the part I remember perfectly is the scene where alice is getting washed down and was saved by the animals. The costumes were great and the costum that remember looking great was the dodo one. Any help is appreciated
I ironically like the porno version it's hilarious 😅 and I also like the 70's porn parody subgenre. And I sense there is no reference on the 1930's Alice and wonderland movie, and I love the stop-motion, puppets and the Hallmark adaptations of Alice in wonderland
There was one with Ms. Goldberg as playing the creepy smiling cat lol. Now that cast and Alice was just weird. And i try watching and i didn't care 4 it. Also i didn't finished watching it.
I grew up on the Disney version and the 1985 TV version. I really like the 2009 Syfy miniseries too.
Wonderland Monkey would make a great band name.

Throwing in random things that have nothing to do with AIW ironically makes it even closer to the source material with it’s absurdity
Wish there were more modern adaptations of Alice, I love how different ppl choose to adapt the story
ohhhh man the '85 versions were a childhood favorite of mine! the damn jabberwock scared the shit out of me, tho

You forgot about the 1933 "Alice in Wonderland" film and the sci fi "Alice" 2009 miniseries.

This video made me watch the xxx parody and why was it genuinely a fun time 😭
I think it would be interesting if someone made Alice’s adventures in wonderland into a horror movie

Jabberwocky was her fears....and she had to overcome her fears, I mean Alice and it was fearful.

I wish you'd included Jonathan Miller's 1966 television version but at least it is available on RUclips. Also Terry Giliam's Jabberwocky
I remember watching one of these with a guy with a robotic sounding voice

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland...
Scarier than I could imagine
I can't believe there was an adult Alice. Smh. Sic.
Thank God there isn't another one.
The 1999,1986,1951 are my FAVORITE
I never saw any but 1985

On a side note Jagged Edge is a R n B singing group. At least with that JE. Lol..😅
If they lived
Bummed you skipped over Lou Bunin with Carol Marsh. To me that really captures the ESSENCE of the book
Great vid, I'd return more often if u made videos of the different versions of media
there was also a silent film version from like 1914, i believe that was the first official adaptation.
Beautiful video
You forgot about "Care Bears in Wonderland".
Scary
Theres no way that singing and song is from an adult film, that seemed too good
