  • Correction: (47:31) I mixed up the "Red Queen" and the "Queen of Hearts" in the 1985 version. These are two different characters in the "Alice in Wonderland" book and in the Natalie Gregory version of Alice.**
This video essay brought to you by my sanity. Down, down, down the rabbit hole I went. I originally saw the 1999 for the first time and it inspired this video essay. Much to my surprise it grew and grew, there certainly wasn't a lack of wonderlands to explore.

This video is absolutely terrific. It came across my feed by complete happenstance. The 1999 version was one of my favorite DVDs I owned and I made my partner watch it with me for the first time a few months ago. He was mortified and confused for the majority of it. Thank you for making this niche video with an exact match of my sense of humor. I made a joke saying "is this guy just me?" To my partner just before you made the grandma's boy comment (my favorite comedy film of all time) and we both absolutely hollered. If you keep making more videos I feel like I'm already along for the ride. Phenomenal work, man!

The Chess board grass comes from the 2nd book "Through the Looking-Glass". Since in that book Wonderland is one big Chess board and game. Alice even has to move like a Pawn moving one space at a time. Many version of Wonderland mush the 2 stories together. That is why you will see The Jabberwocky, The Walrus and the Carpenter, Tweedledum & Tweedledee, Red Queen, White Queen, ect in versions of just "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland"

Alice in Wonderland and Labyrinth sit at different spots on the same uncanny spectrum. Seeing some of these versions of characters really hit that home.

I never watched the Tim Burton one and I am simultaneously shocked and yet not that shocked that Johnny Depp's mad hatter has so much screen time.
I must've blocked that Whoopi Goldberg cat right out of my memories though!

I love your thorough analysis and humor, particularly in reference to the coziness of the old TV movies. It's genuinely been a long time since I laughed out loud at a media review.
Dunking on the Fireys from Labyrinth is fightin' words. They didn't use a green screen so much as they had a giant velvet black curtain and the puppeteers were wearing the exact same fabric, which is why when they chroma keyed out, it looks weird.
Aside from that I think you're 100% on point with your analysis and I really look forward to more videos from you.

    • @BrentonsTV

Good catch! I certainly got my wires crossed. I thought she just had different make up at the end. It didn’t help that Tim Burton really impressed white Queen vs red Queen in my head. Wonderland is Alice’s mind so I would’ve ranked each Alice much like how I ranked the entire movie, with the exception of bumping 2010 up one, and 1986 back down to last place.

@@BrentonsTV Yeah, in the books, The Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts are two different characters. It annoys me that Tim Burton mixed them up like that.

Others have already pointed out that the Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts are two different characters. The Queen of Hearts is from the playing card of course while the Red Queen and the White Queen are chess pieces. I wish you had reviewed the actual Queen of Hearts character from the 85 version. I love her performance and her song.

I mean you can see the slew of videos that talk about the “Downfall of Tim Burton.” I’m not the only one, lol. He’s very M. Night Shyamalan: devoid of soul, repackaged and tired from corporations. That “Chronicles of Narnia” style battle circa 2008 is unforgivable in Alice.

I am a huge fan of Alice(1988) and all though I agree it’s more like a horror movie it’s reason to be was it’s supposed to be even more like you were having a dream/nightmare.
