    I will try your method. I have actually planted chives last month. It's been 28 days since I've done it, still nothing has started to grow. They've been under a growing light as well. It might have been too cold inside and I didn't use any plastic to cover it with. I will try your method see if it'll help any. Thank you for clear and cut instructions! this is my go to video for chives! Thank you so much. I noted that often, in the UK and Europe, and some other countries, what we in the US call "potting soil" is referred to as "compost". May I assume that this is the case here, as well? Again, with profound thanks for concise information!

    • @ianalexander4291
      @ianalexander4291 10 месяцев назад

      Though only an inexperienced gardener, I'd have to say no - I think the terms are much the same, you've just noticed different practices. I (UK) would say that compost (UK) is - hopefully - very rich stuff that comes from organic matter that has been broken down by micro- and macro-organisms; it's what comes out of your garden compost heap. Potting soil (UK) will usually be a mixture of compost, sand, and possibly other things - these can change moisture retention and drainage. That said, some things can be planted in "pure" compost, but you should be more careful about watching moisture levels. I think that's the idea, anyway.

    Question: After they germinate, when you say keep warm and watered...are they indoors or outdoors? This season I planted the seeds indoors, they germinated, and I put they in a sunny south facing window and it gets almost all day of sun. The top of the soil seems to dry up all the time. I spray it wet using a spray bottle. It was growing fine. Then, I noticed fungus gnats on the surface of the soil. I did take it outdoors a couple of times, but I would take it back indoors as they've not been hardened. Not sure if the gnats came from the compost or the peat moss or from being outdoors. Eventually, the plant didn't grow very much and there are more gnats flying around. I know fungus gnats like moist soil. Did I over water? or perhaps the soil was contaminated in the first place. The companion plant I was growing is a snow pea in a container and it too was growing fine (6" tall) and then I noticed the fungus gnats. Fyi, for the 1st time I make my own soil using Peat moss, compost, and Perlite.

    • @LearnHow2
      @LearnHow2  3 года назад

      I think the gnats have come from your compost. Once my plants have germinated I leave them outdoors (after all they are quite hardy and will withstand very cold winter temperatures.) Keep safe.

      If you haven't used fertilizer, try adding a household plant fertilizer at about half strength and watch for a week. Don't water your plants unless the soil is beginning to dry out. Make sure they get plenty of light either on a windowsill or use fluorescent or LED lights a few inches above the plants. If you use artificial lights turn them off at night. They need a dark period To grow well. Don't use incandescent bulbs as this will burn the plants. Keep the temperature between 50 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Don't expose them to Kryptonite😁

    I enjoyed your video. I'm not going to bother with stones at the bottom of the pot. I've always found there is a risk of the soil becoming too sodden at the bottom. I've found that the compost does not run out if you fill the pot properly. Just water regularly and I think they germinate and flourish just as much.

      Hi Alex. Yes - the holes allow excess water to drain away. Plant roots need both water and air to grow. If they sit in a pool of water they will effectively drown then rot. Keep safe.

    • @LearnHow2

      Hi Eileen. Only water when the top of the soil starts to dry. If the roots are in wet soil they will drown and die - they need some air in the soil as well as water. Keep safe.

    I grew my chives from seed and they were doing great until they reached 10 cm and now they seem to have stopped growing. They are in a large pot and have been thinned- I keep them outside on warm days and bring them in and sit them in a sunny south-east window if it gets too windy outside. They are in a good quality organic soil specifically for vegetables. I keep the soil moist but not wet, by misting as I am afraid to hurt the delicate stems. They have been the same height for a few weeks now- they aren't dying off or showing signs of disease, nor are they growing! Any tips on what might be happening? Would adding an organic fertilizer (maybe some worm castings) be of benefit? I am sad as every gardening website that I visit waxes on about how easy chives are to grow, and here I am with my pot of scrawny little chives.

    • @LearnHow2
      @LearnHow2  4 года назад

      I would guess that they are not getting enough nutrients. I transplanted mine from a pot into my garden and they are doing great. Try feeding with a fertilizer every couple of weeks. Good luck!
