  • In this video I describe in detail all the steps required to grow chives successfully from seed on a windowsill. Chives are a very easy herb to grow from seed, and unlike many other herbs can be cut back hard and will continue cropping for many years.

    I've been growing chices in a pot for probably over 10 years now. I live in a cold winter climate, sometimes down to -40 degrees F. They've always been outside. They are the one plant I always know I can count on. I love their light purple flowers, and always let them bloom. Thank you for the video, as it's been that long since I planted them, and was wanting to start some new pots of them. Your video was just the refresher I needed.

      They are such tough plants, yes I love the flowers they are always covered with bees in my garden, it seems to be one of their favourite flowers. I also find they are surprisingly drought tolerant as well as cold tolerant. Good luck with your new plants.

      Thanks, I'm glad you liked my time lapse. Yes when chives first germinate they are very skinny little plants which often have yellowing leaves, but after a few weeks they will really take off and grow well with much bigger leaves. They can reach about a foot tall when mature.

      Yes, the flowers are lovely, I've seen them grown as a green roof before because they have such nice flowers. The longest I've had chives last is 10 years, but that's because I moved house and they were in left in the garden. I think if they are in the right climate outdoors they can last almost forever.

    Apologies that this is 3 years later but I’m only seeing your video now. I have only just recently started growing my own herbs, maybe a bit late in the year but some of them will come indoors anyway. I’m on the Giant’s Causeway coast of Northern Ireland so, like you, we don’t really know what a hot summer is, especially this year!!(2024). I have to say, considering your entire ‘video’ features just a pot full of soil in the shot and your hand coming into view, only the odd time, you pack in a wealth of great information. You have clearly be doing this for quite some time, as your knowledge is impressive and very helpful. As a new subscriber I’ll be coming back for more. Thank you so much for a great deal of very useful information. The time-lapse at the end was interesting. Cheers.

    I'm in Toronto, Canada. When you said "let them get the frost and die back for a *couple* of months..."
    It makes me wonder if I could put half my chives outside from November to January, and the other half out from January to March, and satisfy the dormant requirement while still having chives *in* my home almost 12 months a year...
    (oh, and I finally bought a proper grow lamp)

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  2 года назад +3

      Yes that should work, you may need to give them a few weeks to acclimatise to the cold as going from full growth to well below freezing in the same day could kill them. I see online that Toronto can go below -20C, at those temperatures they can be killed if in pots, even if they are acclimatised. Somewhere like a un-heated garage might be good or near the house so it doesn't get the coldest temperatures over winter. If you have a mild spell in January that would be a good time to put them out as it will give them a few days to acclimatise before the very cold water comes back. Also burying them under a foot of snow should keep them insulated enough to keep them above -20c.

    Hi my chive seeds are half purple and black and after a few days of sowing the soil seems to smell slightly pungent, similar to onions, is this a sign of over watering and rotting?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  5 месяцев назад

      Yes it sounds like it could be an over watering issue. Although I would expect a slight onion smell from chives as they germinate, but it shouldn't be pungent.

    Great video !
    But I have a question, I'm growing my chives on a balcony in Paris, a balcony which gets some sunlight, but the angle and architecture is such that it doesn't get rain water. My question is, when they're dormant should I still water them? If not, when should I start watering them again? In the springtime? How can I know if they need to be watered when there's nothing to indicate if they're dormant or dead due to neglect?

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  3 года назад +4

      Keep them watered at all times, just make sure they are not soaking wet when they are dormant. they don't have big bulbs like onions or garlic so the soil needs to be kept damp to keep their roots alive. When dormant they won't use much water so you will probably only need to water every few weeks or once a month as the compost will take a long time to dry out.

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  3 года назад +1

      It really depends on how warm it is and how much sunshine it gets, but try to keep it damp at all times, but allow any excess water to drain out the pot because you don't want the soil to be soggy, just damp.

    Should you still be watering them when they go into that dormant winter phase? TY

    • @Gardeningat58N
      @Gardeningat58N  3 года назад +2

      Yes, but only a tiny amount. Once the leaves die back the compost will take a long time to dry out as the plant won't be using much water. But the compost should still be kept damp as chives unlike other alliums don't form true bulbs and so can easily dry out. Keep the soil damp, but never wet.

    • @Gardeningat58N

      They will grow inside over winter, but it will weaken the plant, one option is to have two plants, keep one outside from November to January, then swap it with the one inside. They need a cold period once a year, but two or three months is long enough.

    I thought I finally got the chive seeds to sprout, first time grower. It was like 11 days had passed and I seen something starting to come out of the soil and I praised myself thinking it was a chive sprout. 2 days later the leaves appeared and I looked it up online, it’s not chives. It’s parsley. I was transferring my little pots in a shoebox from one place to another and dropped the box, a lot of dirt was everywhere. I did my best and thought the chives were okay but I had to add some dirt back in. Obviously a couple parsley seeds were in there because now I have 2 going. I know they’re parsley because I have 2 pots of parsley sprouts growing. What a shame 🤦‍♂️
