Back in 2004 , I bought a 1990 Miata from the Original Owner .
The clutch was not working and a shop said it would be over $1,000 to fix it .
Since it hadnt run in a couple years , she sold it to me ( with the Hardtop ) , for $600 as is .
The day I brought it home ,my friend fixed the Clutch .
It was the Clutch slave cylinder and it only cost me $38.oo.
Miatas are a blast to drive and I kept it for many years until I bought a 2003 Honda S2000.
Her " shop " was just trying to steal the Miata from her .

For certain common engines even paying a mechanic isn't all that expensive. A couple months back my Buick Lucerne (3800 Series III V6) began making noise in the area of the serpentine belt. Took it to my mechanic, the serpentine belt was coming apart. He replaced the belt, then a couple of weeks later it began making a different noise from the same area. Took it back to the mechanic, he diagnosed (and replaced) the water pump. Total cost for the belt and the pump? Less than $275 - parts, labor, tax, everything.
I love the 3800 series II and III engines, but if you can get away with not busting knuckles on it for that little... heck yeah!
I'd replace the timing belt and tensioner along with the water pump. An aftermarket kit for the 1.6l - 1.8l is around $50. Not much extra work.

I had a timing belt break on a Mustang I used to have - the result was a destroyed engine. I'd definitely replace it if the belt is getting anywhere close to end-of-life.
@Blinknone japanese timing belts are made way way better than american or german cars lol. The belt for Japanese cars can survive twice the rated mileage. Other manufacturers you are lucky to get to end of life.

That sports car version of the Toyota Corolla. My 2003 205k Corolla has had its water pump changed several times throughout its life so I don’t have to worry about that which is great considering the fact I had to put over $3000 in parts & labour to keep it’s maintenance up to date. My next major maintenance is a transmission rebuild.

The owner should have allowed Scotty to replace the water pump, valve cover gasket, spark plugs, and PCV valve (to fix the catalytic converter error).😊
I'm so non-mechanically inclined I would happily pay Scottie to fix all of that.

@MsWolfgang6 I've had several cars repainted. Usually, when they paint the car, they paint the entire car, including the bumper, over to MATCH the original color. What do you think,,?

One trick I use is to take a long screwdriver, hold it to each accessory, and hold my ear near the handle. Acts like a stethoscope and the noisy accessory is very obvious.
I gave up. Mechanic work went along with my being a Automotive machinist. Expectations get higher and higher. Vehicles get worse and worse..😢

You should have explained what happens if you don’t R&R (remove and replace) the water pump, and drive it too long like that… it can be catastrophic on some engines. My dearly departed 03’ Durango comes to mind.
My 2007 Chrysler Town and country was over heating. Turned out to be the temperature sensor switch for the radiator fan. So yeah, could be a lot of reasons.
Wonder if that's the reason my 2002 Ford Focus runs hot sometimes.

My father had a small shop, and I was a kid when two guys came for their car without money. Dad had rebuilt the engine. He picked up a common screwdriver and cut a cardboard box in two. Dad dared them to come and get it. They came back with the money.
He's going to fix the water pump himself but he couldn't diagnose a very very easy fault like that, I can't wait to see the outcome after he replaces the water pump, I wonder if bathroom sealer will be used. 😂
My wife & I love our white ‘99 Miata. We turned it into a “Speed Racer” tribute :)
with that much play, it's a wonder the water pump isn't leaking. Also, alternators and belt tensioners can make the same type of noise when they fail..new engine not required.
My ex had a ‘99 Miata. Fun car to drive in a spirited manner. An Austin Healey Sprite with oversteer. The ratios in the car were taken from a Lotus Elite, I.e. suspension geometry, wheel track and base, etc. The rag top is an absolute joy to put up or down. The best option is the fiberglass hard top for cold days.
Scotty indicated again, the manual transmission will go forever and its fun to drive.

I have a 98 es 300 replaced water pump timing belt ect .by myself turns over won't start. Replaced Cam n crank sensors and loads more.

A plug seal went on my car (also a Mazda) and that cylinder started dumping fuel into the exhaust system. The catalytic converter burned that fuel, which overheated it and it eventually melted itself into an exhaust plug that left me on the side of the road. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have the back pressure tested on that car to see if anything like that has started choking off the exhaust.
I have no idea what any of this means, but I'm fascinated by it

I own one of these, a 2002 model. 85k miles. The more I use it the more I'm sure I'll never sell it.
I had a noise like that in my f150 and it was just a bad belt. I thought I had rod knock 😱
Always start your diagnosis with the most simple mechanical culprits and move up from there.

Scotty, don’t know if you noticed, but the paint in front of the hood doesn’t match the actual hood. Unless the lighting is causing it. But it’s still a nice little sports car.

My 1994 Mazda Protege has a auto tranny and 145,000 miles. Runs like a clock, Jayco must of made better transmissions back then

My old Peugeot 307 1.6 HDI, diesel makes a strange sound only when the engine starts and in then the sound disapear. I do not know what could be the reason.... Could be the water pump?

I had a '99 and remember the dreaded "crankshaft end play" issue. Take it to a dealer and they'd check to make sure it was in spec.
How does putting supercharger on impact longevity on these. Came with it already. Hear it demands 93 when you do
