I worked for American Honda a number of years back. They are not the same company they were decades ago. They are no longer focused on the customer or even their employees. It’s all about the bottom line. We parted ways because I focused on assisting my dealers so they could in turn assist their customers. Honda wasn’t interested in that philosophy. It was about check ing boxes, what the dealers have done for the manufacturer…. Such a shame
I own a 2008 Honda Civic Ex coupe 5 speed manual transmission...with 243000! Just got it about a year ago. I got it for reliability. And it does just that. _save the manuals_
I own 4 Honda Civics. 08 Si, 13 Civic, 18 Civic Touring and a 22 Civic Sport. I maintain them faithfully and they are excellent cars. They are great to drive and will last me until I die.
Recently purchased a 2025 civic, 262 miles in and I had the same steering issue. Took 2 weeks to get fixed. Honda didn't offer me a longer either. On the other hand, My sister has a 2017 toyota corolla. Her car has a paint recall. She took it in and they denied her to have it fixed. Clear coat is chipping all over the car. Honestly both honda and toyota have went down hill along with every other automotive manufacturer. All they care about is pumping cars out as fast, cheap as possible so they cab make a profit.
@@DarkForce2024 With her car it was toyotas discretion to fix it or not. That came directly from toyota. It's proably a safety recall only type deal. Her car doesn't have any manufacturer warranty left.
@@amossealssomething is off with your toyota story. A recall is a recall issued by head office Japan and no there no discretions. Toyota is and will always be the king of reliability. Paint chip issues are easy to fix. Engine and mechanical problems like honda… not so much
@@yhussain733 Clear coat missing all over the car isn’t just a simple fix. It’s a complete repaint. Stripped down to primer. The whole nine yards. COSTLY for Toyota.
Be wary of any new models, systems, innovations, or technologies regardless of the manufacturer. Tried and true engines and transmissions are what you want. It is all these new items that have caused a lowering of Honda and Toyota reliability scores.
when I bought 1984 corolla, it is a new model and also new engine! People back then also keep saying be warry of Toyota and their small new engine. I guess no matter what year and age, people doesn't change! Your "warry" was the same exact thing I heard back in the late 1983, that is like more than 4 decades ago! If you wanted tried and true and Toyota succumb to your conservative mind, you all still using carburetor engine and get like 10 mpg highway in 2024!
@@slothypunk Good for you! You got a fine vehicle. I only said " be wary".... not " don't buy". Even established cars and trucks can turn out to be lemons. As the old saying goes..." you pays yer money and you takes yer chances !"
When I was a young man, I was hitchhiking to work at the shipyard in Mississippi looked and a little car was pulling over and I've never seen one come to find out. It was one of my bosses and it was the first Honda car in the United States. It had the 750 motorcycle motor in it. I'll never forget it. And he drove that thing for years, if I remember Riley said you got 54 miles to the gallon and it was a little 3 speed. Yeah, 3 were the cars are good and you You could. Hitchhike. .
Back in the 1960s I hitchhiked all over the place. Once my car broke down around midnight on a country road. A car with 3 blacks in it picked me up and took me to an all-night towing service. My car was towed in that night and repaired the next day.
It was probably the N600. 600cc parallel air cooled twin with a 4 speed manual transmission. 1970- 1972. First Civic was in 1973 and that had a 1200cc liquid cooled 4 cylinder. HondaMatic was a clutch less 2 speed manual shift transmission first available on the Civic.
@@fomomofo6917 I just looked it up they have just under 124 million, the trouble is Japan is around 26 times smaller than the size of the US so it's very crowded in comparison.
Longtime Honda buyer. Currently have a 17 Accord V6 and 18 Accord Touring 1.5L T. The 17 isn’t perfect, but I love the V6 connected to a real transmission. The 18 is susceptible to oil dilution, but I think it’s driven frequently and long enough each trip to avoid serious trouble. We are waiting for a fuel pump replacement due to recall. Same situation as with the old Takata airbags - large recall and no way to increase part production. Probably looking at Mazda for the next car. Environmental standards are way out in front of engineering capability, and quality/reliability is suffering industry wide.
The heat in a gas powered car is free. The alternator renews the power it costs to run the blower motor. The radiator is basically a heat exchanger, the heat is there wether you use it or not.
I can't explain this to my dad only for the A/C, he thinks the faster the blower motor is running the more gas it uses. Your using the same amount of power to run the air compressor no matter what speed the blower motor is on. A fan is very efficient to begin with, and if on low, med, or high is being run from the alternator anyway, the fuel usage is virtually, if not completely zero.
@DarkForce2024 Your 100% correct. The people in the backseat will love you when you kicker up on high when it's 100 degrees outside. Dosen't cost a dime. 😆
It's only free when going downhill in drive or better said in gear. When the road drives your wheels, your transmission, your engine, and everthing attached to it.
@@DarkForce2024Not quite correct. The AC compresor is connected to the engine belt so it needs a certain ammount of torque to be moved making consumption slight higher around 0.5liters(0.13 gallons).
@@The_Touring_Jedi I'm not talking about the A/C compressor. I'm talking about the blower motor. Doesn't matter what speed the blower motor is on, uses the same amount of gas. Blower Motor runs off the alternator, because it's electric.
I have a 2017 Corolla SE with the older k313 CVT without the physical launch gear! About to cross 140k miles and it drives like a brand new car. Change the fluid and even a CVT can take care of you! I changed the fluid at 65k miles and again at 120k miles. My personal second experience with one of these CVTs. My previous car was a 2016 Corolla LE with the same CVT and traded it in at 120k miles (for the 2017) with no issues ever with the transmission!
Not just Honda, Toyota has engines blowing up left and right, suspension falling apart and transmission issues. The reality is that Toyota and Honda, might be Japanese brands, but they are made in Mexico/US/Canada.
From canada Mazda,cx 5 made in Japan 2024 just bought it without cylinder deactivation or I stop and a non turbo engine. It is a dying breed for sure I'm hoping to hang on to it for a long time
I was a Honda driver throughout the 80s and 90s. 2 Accords, 2 Odysseys and 1 Legend: great cars. I rented a Civic a month ago and what a POS. Cheap plastic everywhere, cheap fabric on the seats and that dreaded CVT transmission with no oomph. No wonder they're going bankrupt
1980's and 1990's was the peak in quality for Japanese cars period. Nowadays too many sensors and computers ruining them but they're still better than domestic cars.
Me too. Own two with the earth dreams turbo. NO issues. CVT, NO issues. Fun and easy to drive. Scotty has always disliked small displacement turbo engines, even though Honda has many many years of research and development sharing thier racing engine platform to its regular base line consumer drivetrains.
I have a 1990 Honda Accord LX Sedan. It’s my first Honda and my only car right now. I really love it. My goal is to get a 2016-17 Accord as a daily driver eventually.
I drove my 2005 Pilot for 10 years 150K, sold it to my neighbor and he is still driving it. 2015 I purchased a new Acura MDX drove it 60K traded it in on a new 2019 Passport and I'm still driving it with 73K. Buying a new Pilot next year. Never any mechanical issues. Do the maintenance and they will go 300K or more if you want to keep it that long.
It's unfortunate that reliability has gone down for pretty much all car manufacturers. And I agree with you toyota and honda were good. Then honda started declining. And now I'm starting to see more and more new toyotas with all kinds of problems. Mostly I would say 2020 and newer toyotas. It's so sad the direction the industry is going.
I have the 1.5L Turbo. 2019. I use penzoil ultra platinum oil and change it every 4k miles. I also only use premium 91 gas. Runs like a champ at 95k miles
True statement about the Hondas these days. I’ll buy an older design over a newer one. Less computers and more reliable, and most of all, no proprietary parts!
Honda after the early 2000's started to mess up bad. I had a automatic transmission 04 honda accord v6. Junk mechanically in transmission. Known for destruction of the transmissions that led up a law suit on my accord. The only Hondas that last and are worth it to me are 90's one with manual transmission. My friend has a manual 90s civic reliability is solid
Recently my 2001 Honda CRV had a massive battery issue that fried most of the electronics in my car. Car had less then 120k miles on it and was in great condition. Honda techs couldnt repair it and it was becoming a nightmare so I ended up buying a brand new 2024 civic. Not even 2 weeks in, it suffered a battery fire, destroying most of the front end of the car. Im still in shock of how such a thing could happen, I used to considered honda the pillar of reliability. Never again.
I am in the insurance collision industry and I’d love to tell you stories of BEV issues people are having specific to collisions and bizarre claim issues.
I had Hondas for decades. My last, a new 2017 CRV, had oil dilution problems just months after brand new. Dealer denied and ordeal continued until I trade it for another brand. Never again a Honda, and it hurts.
The problem is car companies are not being run by proud engineers, but by greedy bean counters. So they want to build their brands, or just make a quick, non recurrent profit?
I think in general all vehicles today have more problems with all car makers being forced to do unreliable engineering changes to satisfy regulations. Its why so many went to small turbo engines and CVT transmissions and even 8 and 10 speed automatics. All less reliable and more prone to failures especially when neglected. More complexity means more chance of failures.
Thanks for this Scotty! I was thinking of replacing my 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser with a Honda Ridgeline pickup. My FJ has 200k miles on it so gotta make a change at some point.
You could mention the clutch on manuel hondas, very commen in europe. If the weather is cold and wet, the car "jumps" when a time after start. It doesnt help long, if you replace it with an original clutch - use a copy instead..
Scotty is totally right about the cold and batteries if you have ever done jobs like snow removal or a gone snowboarding you will know your iphone dies quicker and literally freezes to death same with
You still see those 90s civics, the cool 2 door hatchback, street-modded. My mom had one of those, stick; it got about 40-45 mpg highway, simply amazing. Indestructible. My 2019 Ridgeline on the other hand, the transmission crapped-out at 48k mi. and lots of silly recalls, and lots of dumb design-issues, like a tailgate with no lock, and back doors that open half-way. Pretty disappointing... got the transmission replaced under warranty and traded that thing on a used Tundra.
I have a coolant leak on my 2020 Ridgeline and the parts aren't available for 3 weeks. Was going on a camping trip to the Kootenays next week and will just have to bring extra coolant to keep topping it up. Grrreat..
@MrDmadness You're right and if it gets out of hand will probablyhave to resort to that. Do have a 50/50 pre-mixed but this time of year water would work fine too. Just hate having to roll the dice hoping the leak doesn't get alot worse. Heading to a lake closer now but still out of cell range and pulling a trailer with a quad in the bed. 🤞
These aren't the 90 civics we used to beat the crap of. You have to baby the new ones. If you take care of the new ones they might make it to 40k miles!
A friend has a Nisson Versa with a CVT with over 100k miles. He faithfully has the transmission fluid changed according to the owner’s manual. No transmission problems.
Their new Civic SI suck with the 1.5L turbocharged is the reason i bought a used 2013 SI with a 2.4L V-Tech with a E-brake handle and last year they made it with a key starter. It runs way better instead of the new ones.
I got rid of my crv. Turbo and CVT just awful. Went with Japanese mad3 mazda cx5, auto transmission & a LOT more features & standard options than honda. Will never buy a honda or toyota again !!
It's a moot point as he now lives in Florida, but my dad used to just scrape about a square foot of ice/snow directly in front of the drivers side windshield, and just start driving immediately. He's like defrost? Who needs it! Heat? I got a jacket! The only thing about that is, the engine DOES heat up quicker moving than at idle.
On EV batteries: If plugged in at home; the battery will draw power from the house to both cool and heat the battery. When on the road in the Winter, battery creates heat when in use. I may need to cool its self on the road in the summer if it gets too hot.
Interesting that most of Honda's issues are the models manufactured here in the US...the ones in Asia don't seem to have the issues we have here in the US...
I just got a new Honda HRX217 and I just love the things. I had to get one more because Honda will be stopping making smaller gasoline powered equipment 😢
I love the 90's Hondas. In fact, i own four del Sols (U.S. manufactured 93-97) they run incredible, easy to work on and inexpensive to maintain. Not a big fan of the Hondas of Today.
I intend to buy one of these new $5,000 tesla cars. Charging it at home will be much cheaper than the price of gas here in phoenix, While it only has a 200 mile range, that is way more than we drive in a day. Even changing the oil nyself myself, still costs $35.
The subsides for gasoline and deregulation of environmental protections, as well as lack of consumer protections. All brought to you by the industry-owned GOP.
@LoganFruz they are so Zippy and I love the six-speed automatic that does the shifting no CVT crap you get the real zoom zoom in Mazda everyone should test drive one. :)
First new car was a 1981 Civic 1500DX, 1.5L CVCC 4cyl, 5spd manual, A/C, P/S, carbureted. 37mpg combined, no computer. Drove 65k before first repair besides oil changes > dirt in carb fuel inlet. Brakes at 95k, clutch at 110k. Massachusetts road salt ate away at motor mounts....enginedropped out on the streeet 125k. Woul buy one again if I could fingld one
Chose to find my wife an '05 CRV over the new models. Somethin about them taking away real spare tires made me take a rust risk over mechanical failures. 😅
The keyless fobs are a stupid idea. My Toyota Fob needs to be taken out of my pocket and use a sequence of button pushing to disable the transmitter so no one hacks my fob. The older coded key with remote buttons was unhackable to start the engine.
And the greedy Honda dealers who tacked on thousands on top of sticker when the market was tight certainly tarnished Hondas reputation. No way I’d do business with a Honda dealer after what I saw and experienced when buying my Type R.
The shopping cart guy is as crazy as me. In 87 I built a riding mower from left over parts (my Dad wouldn't let me buy or build a go kart). So, I built riding mowers that did more. I had gears, modified engines from scratch parts, many hand made parts. My Dad said "and no brains ". Niebors were wanting to buy my fast go karts..... no sale! They buy a kart and I would modify it... safely. Funny story. A friend of mine was a police officer and said "If you are cruising along and a riding mower passes you, that is Mikel ". Mikel
I had a new 2016 Honda Civic before, AC not working in two years, and then have a recall, but after recall, one side of the blower still not cooling, then I just sold it, so disappointed for Honda quality 😢😢😢😢😢
Honestly, I think almost all the manufacturers are having issues with OEM parts and actually getting the parts. I believe that the U.S. requires auto manufacturers to have parts available for at least 10 years. The issue is getting the parts from different sources is a problem. It seems they have just enough parts to build a vehicle, but no spares as soon as the parts come in they directly to build a new vehicle.
I have a 2014 Honda Accord LX I thank god I have not had any problems/issues with my Honda Accord since I’ve had it,when I bought it in November 2017 it had 52,000 miles on it,it now has 82,000 miles on it, still no problems/issues at all, thank god!!
I’ve had 2 95 civic ex’s, 01 ex, 03 si, 08 si, an 18 and a 19 sport, a 97 integra LS, and a 01 gsr (all manual) and between all of them the only issues I had other than normal maintenance was the 01 ex had some issue that it stuttered at low rpm sometimes it would die, the classic 08 paint fade, and I brought my one 18 sport brand new and the passenger window motor failed on the way home from the dealership😭😂but honestly between all those cars I cant complain

I guess no matter what year and age, people doesn't change! Your "warry" was the same exact thing I heard back in the late 1983, that is like more than 4 decades ago!

It's unfortunate that reliability has gone down for pretty much all car manufacturers. And I agree with you toyota and honda were good. Then honda started declining.
What exactly does that have to do with the power steering going out?

Honestly, I think almost all the manufacturers are having issues with OEM parts and actually getting the parts. I believe that the U.S. requires auto manufacturers to have parts available for at least 10 years. The issue is getting the parts from different sources is a problem. It seems they have just enough parts to build a vehicle, but no spares as soon as the parts come in they directly to build a new vehicle.
