      @colinchevrier2860 Год назад +7

      The ABP set for the EVGA RTX 3080 TI comes with templates for the thermal pads on the cardboard so you don't have to guess at the size. Some of the pads need to be cut pretty small and I think they would get lost very easily if they were pre-cut.

  • @rustler08

    1. Don't touch thermal pads with your bare hands.
    2. Since EKWB refuses to add pads themselves, here's a tip: press the plastic-covered thermal pads against the length of the VRMs or capacitors you need to apply the pads to. This will create an indention that gives you the exact template you need for length and width.
    3. I honestly would spread the thermal compound on a GPU. Unlike a CPU, there is extremely little clamping pressure due to both the surface area and the mounting mechanism.
    4. EK: stop providing generic pad lengths and instead pre-apply them. We are talking anywhere from $250-400, so I would expect that the pads be applied at this price point considering that even Corsair does it, and those are $220 blocks. I don't need you to add the paste, but I shouldn't have to do this myself. If I want to add my own pads, I can peel the stock ones off. You're honestly probably losing customers to Corsair just over this decision alone: unless you're providing significantly better cooling performance, it's a really hard sell to be offering an installation process that takes 3-4x longer.

      re 1: always use Nitrile gloves, foam build mat, with ESD-wrist lanyard. best practices; 3 - recommend Noctua NT-H1 thermal paste vice the Thermal Grizzly paste supplied. the TG is relegated for relidding cpu apps and that matl needs to be used with caution. if any of the paste touches any circuitry - your f’d. with the Noctua, you place strategic 2mm and 3mm dots of paste onto the die. no “x-pattern” and def no smearing or full coverage of the Nvidia’s die. Just a tip to others who install the active backplate set... at the end, after using the 6 Philips screws to tighten the backplate to the frontplate, you may find that the holes for the 3 terminal hex screws do not align and the screws will not go in/catch. This is because the thermal pads haven't been fully compressed, and the backplate isn't lowered down far enough to align with the hex screw holes on the frontplate. You probably won't be able to compress them fully from just the 6 Philips screws alone.
    Instead, remove the 6 Philips screws, sandwich the backplate down against the frontplate with your hands and try inserting the hex screws. If they catch, great, screw them in. Now screw in the remaining 6 Philips screws to provide the support to maintain that clamping pressure.
    You can actually see him run into this problem himself around the 15:50 mark...

      I fought this issue as well. I tried to be very accurate with the diagram and pad placement but it's still an issue. Applying heavy pressure with your hand on the surface, to get the screws to catch is risky. If I cracked the die on accident doing this I'm going to be pretty sad.

    • @BigBHole69
      @BigBHole69 Год назад +1

      @gyo kuto it's not that risky, you're applying pressure to the backside, not the die side so youre unlikely to crack the die. Not to mention its expected that you'll need some pressure to squish the pads, nothing insane there.

If all you want to do is boot to BIOS and make sure that the card gives a signal, you can absolutely do that even though you've not hooked up the block ports to any water. I did it and it was fine.

    12:50 You should insert all five screws first and then tighten the GPU core screws. If you wait to insert the fifth screw, you might find the holes don't line up and you'll have to loosen the first four screws to fix the problem.
    14:30 Be careful when handling the passive backplate. The screws are not truly captured; they have little plastic grommets to hold the screws. They are loose and can fall off. What should have been the easiest part of assembly ended up taking twenty minutes because I had to hunt for the grommets and screws on the floor.

I also had to use screws from my oem cooler because two screws were missing in the bag (the two that attached the i/o for output on the gpu block. 6mm). Also, the thermal pads on the far side of each gpu block have to be cut to exact size or they will show through plexi and it looks bad.

    Why in the world would you do both versions at the same time. This is ridiculous. Do a video JUST FOR THE ABP. Also, fast forwarding through critical moments, sometimes people buy used blocks and they might not know what screw goes where, like when taking out the 3 Allen screws behind the magnetic cover. I have a bag of screws and needed to see what screws came out of the those three holes behind the magnetic cover
