    When you were applying the thermal pads for the active backplate (the backside of the GPU) you forgot to add some small pads to the 'top' and 'bottom' sides of the central chip. The whole card while being custom watercooled is cold to the touch already from only cooling it from one side, there isnt any improvement, if anything most backplates make it worse because most of them require you to mount your block slightly different.

    I have the active backplate for my 4090 TUF OC in plexi and I'm just happy with it. It looks pretty cool with both sides lighted up (vertical mounted). The normal one is just so thin in my opinion. And, from what I experienced, there is less heat in the case, bc there is no backplate transporting the heat from GPU into case (which it does even if there are no chips on the back). All the heat is transported away from the parts and blown out of the case. The inner of my case stays pretty cool, even on long gaming sessions and in warm ambient. There is no heat building up between GPU and Motherboard. And yes, I know, the block was 400€ here in EU, but rly. The parts for my PC costs me ~9.000€, so I don't care about 200€ more for the active backplate version of the GPU-block 🤷‍♂

    This kind of cooling is just plain stupid. 1, functionally speaking, in 2023 it simply isn't needed... I guess you could argue it makes the card smaller?? The problem is that those of us who buy this kind of hardware are constantly upgrading, cooling like this makes upgrades a nightmare

    • @JathraDH
      @JathraDH Год назад +5

      It's needed in 2023 more than ever with the power density of modern chips. Why do you think air coolers are so huge these days?
      I also have no idea what you are talking about with the upgrades thing. Water cooling is an amazingly fun hobby and people who do it often times just do it for the fun of building out systems. It also looks badass.
      It's usually more of a matter of the journey being more important than the destination.

    • @dragonsystems5973
      @dragonsystems5973 Год назад

      @@JathraDH Point 1. Yeah, put an AIO on your CPU, I have an H150i, no big deal. As far as your GPU, NO, it isnt needed. As I said, you might be able to argue it makes the GPU smaller, HOWEVER that is mostly irrellevant as a substantial portion of the cases that can take the kind of liquid cooling being discussed here can fit a full size 4090. As far as actual cooling needs, you are also wrong. My MSI 4090 Gaming X Trio is one of the coolest running cards ive seen in years, thanks to said massive cooler.
      As far as upgrades and not knowing what I am talking about, that is just your own choice to bury your head in the sand. Prime example. Lets say you have a system with a 3090 you water blocked along with your CPU, and maybe you went balls to the wall and did your board itself as well. Great, very pretty system. 3 months later you find a deal on your local offerup for a 4090 for $1400... some guys wife got pissed at him and he just needs to unload it fast. two days after that you find a deal for $450 to upgrade your 10900K to a 13700K... care to enlighten all of us as to the work and cost that will be neccesary for what otherwise would have been some quick easy upgrades?

      @@dragonsystems5973 Well you just don't get the mentality of making a custom loop that much is obvious. The hobby isn't for everyone for sure. To each their own.
      However my point about power density still stands. There is more justification now than any time before it for using water cooling because power densities have never been higher.
      If that wasn't the case we wouldn't need 14 inch long 3-4 inch thick air coolers on our GPUs and have CPU's (13900K) that can't even really be properly cooled on most AIOs. Hell custom loops barely keep that thing cool without a delid.
      I should know. I have one running on my VERY overbuilt custom loop that runs sub 10C DT at full load and sub 2C idle and it can still hit 80c+ maxed out even without a massive overclock.
      As for upgrades, lol. People building custom loops would have just had the 4090 and 13900K to begin with, built the system with the loop and then coasted on it. Then they build the next system later on with the latest tech. You don't constantly need to upgrade when you build the system with the best available to begin with.
      The system goes together, destroys everything for many years and then when you upgrade you build a whole new PC which is another fun project down the road.
      Like I said, you just don't get the mentality of custom loop builders and that's fine.

    I also have EK first active back plate and it was last year on my 3090ti. It didnt come out this gen it was last gen. The evga 3090ti on ABP looks so good.

    The termninals on the newer Vector 2 ABP (40 Series) cards doesn't require you to have one front and one on a back port. They can be both front, or both back and it will operate just fine. Older ones for the 30 series are the ones restricted like that.

The connectors have been cracking all the way through the board after a while which destroys the card for good. They’re heavy!

    I have an ABP full set on a EVGA 3080Ti, weighs a ton but does drop temps. Due to the weight (think its about 7.5 Ibs) had to vertically mount it. It just about fits with an Asus Z790 but still allows clearance for a P360MP radiator in the bottom of a Lian Li 011D XL with fans. Only negative is the PCIE cable Gen 4.0, it pushes up against the back block with some resistance. I used the EKWB vertical bracket (expensive but good) and that came with a 200mm. I had to buy a 150mm cable to avoid the push back and its all OK.

    I did this for my 3090FE: I first had EK's half-ass active back plate, and then later upgraded to the fully active back plate. It didn't make a hell of a lot of difference, even with OC'ing the VRAM like I was. And in total, the card, main block, and back plate together weighed almost 7lbs. I *had* to use an internal support beam for it. It'd destroy the PCI-E slot otherwise.
    With the 4090FE, I went with EK's standard block and passive back plate.

    I have a 4080 (msi gaming x trio) with the EK block (without the active backplate), and it fits on the Asus Maximus Extreme board. FYI it idles around 20-25C and I haven’t been able to push it past 50 C with any modern games (given I haven’t tried Cyberpunk lol).
    Don’t worry about an active backplate unless you’re overclocking and plan on skipping the next 2 GPU gens.

    You could still use that m.2 slot in a rigid tubing build if you use a m.2 drive with a preinstalled heatsink. Remove the large heatsink of the motherboard, then the slot is much easier to access, even between an active gpu backplate and a cpu monoblock.
