Don Brewer's touring drum tech confirmed somewhere on here that she did perfectly nail it. Most music child prodigies play piano, violin, cello, etc whilst Yoyoka blows away that stereotype with her ability on the skins. I'm looking forward to seeing where she'll be musically ten years from now when she'll be 21. 🥁

As the war in Israel heats up it was a good thing to remember this video of the nine year old joy bomb named Yoyoka. When life seems too crazy to believe, I watch this video and remember it is not all bad. This, then child, now budding woman, proves that.

JOY BOMB, JOY BOMB, JOY BOMB. Just like so many folk have said, whenever I am feeling a bit low, Yoyoka's pure happiness as she plays always lifts me. her skill is amazing, but it's that joy that kills my blues. Having entered her teen years now, she is naturally becoming a little more stoic and serious. Yet now and then she shows you that she still has a childlike energy inside as she plays. Her amazing skill is self-evident, as is her optimism. This planet could use more Yoyoka.

Yoyoka is clearly gifted, and also puts in the work practicing, so kudos to her and to her family for encouraging her, but also - and I think this gets mentioned less often - kudos to them for raising her in an environment of such great music?? I was born early enough that my childhood covered all of the 1970s, the whole ten-year-long kit and caboodle of it, so to me this music is my childhood because it’s what was in the air, playing everywhere or blasting out the windows of folks’ Volkswagen Beetles, Thunderbirds, and vans, from their radios, 8-tracks, or (later) cassette decks… but this family must’ve gone out of their way to play music with great drumming for Yoyoka, and kudos to them for it!

FYI.. in one of her vids where she is playing drums with another teenage drummer, he asked her about how much she practices.
Yoyoka replied that "I am lazy and don't like practicing. I practice maybe 30 min a day, an hour or so when learning a new song."
Needless to say the teenage drummer was shocked! She also doesn't know how to read music.
She truly is a prodigy, exceptionally gifted.

Oh! She also states in other videos that at the age of 2, listening to the Beatles started her love of drumming. She cites being hooked on Ringo Starr. Her parents are musicians and they would have friends over to jam.

I've watched a few Yoyoka interview videos, and interviews with her parents. Her parents say Yoyoka finds some of her favourite music herself. They said she started drumming to Led Zeppelin, at about 7yo, and they didn't recognise it. She was self-taught from 2yo to 9yo. Also, her parents and Yoyoka both say she was only allowed to practice 30 minutes/day until she reached 9yo. Her parents wanted her to grow up as a normal kid. 👏
So she got this good, while her body grew, I guess, about 50% as she developed coordination, strength and speed. All the while learning how to make friendships, speak, read, ride a bike, and handle getting a younger brother. Plus, she has the 'ear' and ability to find Led Zeppelin, and other music, herself! 👍😂
Key to her life are her wonderful parents, family and their friends. Her parents are musicians, so she was hearing live music before she was born. She says they live in a rural part of Japan, so they can make lots of noise. 😃They have a home studio where her parents' band would practice. Plus her parents put musical instruments in most rooms. So even before she could walk, she'd experienced live music. I think children (anyone!) react to live music and musical instruments more viscerally than reproduced music.

out of curiosity, I looked and listened to one of the original live Grand funk you tube videos, quite honestly her rendition is technically superior to that particular Don Brewer version, with more complex fills , And the no look back handed cymbal crash was precious. Her groove is un stoppable, what a sense of time.

Oh yeah, she is just playing drum.

Open your ears and listen yourself, recently she did a song with Cindy Lauper in Tokyo, live on stage and presented an excellent drum solo and went on to out energize the tour drummer.
