"I"...even have trouble with this tune; the stamina of that shuffle pattern; seating the groove; placing and 'scaling'...those ghost strokes...and keeping them up to tempo... remembering all the little "Porcaro' Genius Parts, throughout....and where they go...and the fact that this little girl...can facilitate this 'beast' of a song to play...is staggering. Not a lot of people especially at your age do that beat the song on a hi-hat but you my dear do an extremely good job and your drums are tuned perfectly. People with the same potential capacities can wind up doing entirely different things with those capacities, depending on what they're interested in. In the 90s I was a touring bandleader for a couple of different solo artists, and hence I auditioned a LOT of drummers (I'm no drummer, by the way). This was always the tune I asked for first... which saved me a LOT of time. Many many (otherwise very good) drummers just cannot get this groove down. Hence this performance is just astonishing.

      @@miktoh Absolutely right. If you want he clearest giveaway on how difficult the Pocaro shuffle is . . . look at Yoyoka's face. This girl has done covers of Led Zepplin, Queen, Grand Funk, Stray Cats, RHCP and Foo FIghters, and maintained a beaming smile and loose body language throughout. This one, she has to really focus and concentrate. Not only is this HELLA difficult for a drummer to play, but it shifts both tempo and pattern several times throughout the song. She may not have it down 100%, but Ive seen drummers who have been drumming professionally for three times longer than Yoyoka has been alive . . . and they STILL struggle to keep the groove.
      Thank you again Yoyoka! You are truly the best.
      As for you @Darren Frank . . . . dude . . . . if you want to see something thatll blow your mind, watch Yoyoka do "Rock this Town" while standing on one foot throughout the entire song. People, including myself have commented you can see her concentrating on this song , no smiles no kidding around. But her technical abilities absolutely shine with this performance. The difficulty of the shuffle with one hand the other doing different cymbal work and the foot work all spot on along with the perfect timing coming out of a pause and into the toms. I think you could pick this performance apart and would be hard pressed to find 1 mistake.....Again, 10 years old ....... I can say one thing, she will be or already is an incredible soccer (fútbol) player!

    This beat is so hard, most drummers even if they could play it, would play it sloppy. Yoyoka here not only can play it, but she plays it pocket from start to finish.
    Many drummers can’t even play simple beats in the pocket.
    Yoyoka is in the very top bracket of drummers.

    For many years I have been telling people how astoundingly difficult Jeff Porcaro's---then a well-known top-tier session man and musician's musician---work on "Roseanna" was. This lets everyone see it. Kudos to Yoyoka for having the extraterrestrial talent and awareness to pull it off with very little hitch.

    So I'm soon to be 39, and I've never been able to play a shuffle like this. Because of this video, I looked up Porcaro's tutorial, which lead me to a tutorial on "fool in the rain" from Bonham. I took some time to figure that one out, and now I'm progressing to Rosanna, and it feels great to finally learn something that's always been a brick wall to me. All thanks to YOYOKA! xD

    The drum pattern is known as a "half-time shuffle", and shows "definite jazz influence",[7] featuring ghost notes and derived from the combination of the Purdie shuffle, Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham's shuffle on "Fool in the Rain", and the Bo Diddley beat. The Purdie shuffle can be prominently heard on track "Home at Last" which Jeff Porcaro cited as an influence.

    • @robertdore9592
      @robertdore9592 4 года назад +3

      That's not totally correct. The very first time I heard the so called 'Purdie Shuffle' was when Billy Cobham played it as an outro on a Mahavishnu track in the early 70's; he probably heard it somewhere else before - there's nothing new under the sun, it's the interpretation and refinement that colours the groove. This is quite beside the point however as, this kid HAS IT...no doubt - well played.

    • @boooootch
      @boooootch 4 года назад

      Robert Dore Robert RamJam is directly citing here Jeff Porcaro himself talking about how he constructed this beat for the song Rosanna. What he has written is pretty much verbatim what Jeff said in an instructional video before his death.

Most of them are pretty bad and pathetic. BUT this young lady has precision, attack and musical feeling that I rarely see in these kinds of videos. She is better than 90% of the other drummers on RUclips who are touting "great" cover performances.

      lot of people can cover excellent and then go flat on original productions, she's got a lot coming up here in the short future, growing into a teenager, it's gonna be one thing to keep some qualities and let go of some. whoever has managed her so far is doing something way cool. and again pretty soon she's gonna be facing some serious choices that'll launch her into a productive future or put the brakes on it, who she plays with or what she wants to do. she's already sitting on a golden egg, hope she can keep it.

    Every once in a while I come back to this video and I’m blown away every time I do. She is so on top of this and inside it - I know that sounds physically like a contradiction, but musically it’s not. She is so insanely natural and relaxed while keeping better time than a metronome. There’s a reason she recently made the 500 Best Drummers in the World list. I forget whose. She is of course the youngest drummer on the list at eleven.

      Let's hope she sticks with it. And truly loves playing. Rarely do you see Asian kids on drums. It's not one of the usual instruments of choice fo their parent (btw..I'm Asian...born in Canada). Like to see how she is in 5 years. Maybe she 'll loosen up more. Sounded fairly "correct" but a little robotic. Like her mind is trying to remember sections at a time. How many Asian kids/adults play. Very "left brained" mechanical approach. Usually.

      It's not the meter, which is super precise. It's the feel. She's better at balls-out rock than she is with things that require quiet finesse and subtlety. That's the slightly odd difference we hear in there-Porcaro swings and is understated, and she's playing on top of it with surgical precision. But give her 4 or 5 more years and she'll probably out-subtle anyone.
