Hi Afzal, Thank you for another insightful video! I attend a non-target uni in Africa and I also have no academic background/internships in finance. A while back, I found some of your videos while putting my application together for a new grad role at Goldman Sachs. Your insightful videos and detailed explanations really helped me through my application, HireVue, Superday, and VP interview. I have now received a full-time job offer at GS! Thank you for the effort you put into creating these videos. Your work is surely impacting lots of people like me around the world. Stay blessed!
Awesome story man! When are you going into the office? I got a 2022 offer for the AM division. As Afzal viewers we gotta meet up someday at the office haha
Just finished the interview! I was asked the following (new) questions: What has your biggest professional accomplishment? Why did you choose this accomplishment? What steps did you take to achieve it? What was the impact of this accomplishment? A committee you work on is tasked with putting someone in an open Junior Leadership position and you want it. This position has a minimum of two years on the committee as a requirement. You have only been on the team for one year. How do you handle the situation? You have an important presentation to give on Monday. You were just invited to a related conference for work, also on Monday. What do you choose to do? Slight variations on what I had prepared, but I still felt mostly prepared. Thanks, Afzal!
Update on my questions. I interviewed for the early careers program client services and sales. I had 5 questions, I don’t remember the first. 1. You have a presentation to give Monday. You were also invited to a conference on that same day, you really want to go to the conference. What do you do? Why do you chose that option. 2. You have just submitted a critical monthly report on behalf of your team to your manager. You realize there is a mistake on part of the report that is small and probably wont be noticed. What would you do? 3. Your manager assigns you to a working group to begin working on a project the other employees that you’re working with all know each other really well but you don’t. What would you do in this situation? 4. A work committee that you are a part of is looking to hire a junior leadership position. Normally they consider employees who have 2 years of leadership experience. You want this position but you only have 1 year of experience and no previous experience in leadership. What do you do?
Anyone have a good response/idea for #4? I feel like there's a conflict of interest and the safe answer would be to not apply. Just want to know others' thoughts. This one is a little tough to answer not given a ton of info
Yes 4 seemed like a conflict of interest question at first, but on second reading it can also be taken as a question about how you leverage opportunity. Here’s some options: 1. Sit back and accept your position in the committee until you have two years experience etc. 2. Leverage the opportunity by making the team aware of your interest and request feedback for your interest in the position. Do you display key competencies or character traits? Are they willing to give you more training and responsibility to display your leadership skills? Depending on feedback you can decide whether to apply or not.
I wish there was a channel like this for other industries like real estate/property management. Not hard to get into to be honest but alot of useful information other there that can help people progress.
I think question 14's best answer is to first approach them and try to have a good faith conversation with them and suggest they come forward voluntarily. If they still refuse, you then escalate and report them.
Just in time! I have a second round consulting analyst interview today and a lot of these questions are very similar to what I expect they are going to ask. Similar questions in my first round. Thanks for doing this!
Had this question in a super day... Literally said I wanted to work for Goldman because GS was handing out bonuses when other banks were blowing up/going belly up. Honest and it worked. Not sure how the video interviews work.
add to the list: "How will you handle a situation when you have an important work deadline approaching and you have a personal event that you have been looking forward to approaching soon that conflicts with the work coming up" / i think they want to hear you say that you can find time to make both of the tasks achievable. not just say put off the fun and work only.
Thank you Afzal! this was really helpful for my recent interview, I have been following your page for a while and love your content. Keep doing what you're doing man!
Good evening from Japan - thanks so much for your insightful videos. I just wanted to drop a short message here to thank you as I got an offer from one of the biggest financial data vendor in the world thanks to you 😭✨
Deadline vs Missing information - I agree, prioritise the deadline, but also definitely make a decision as early as possible as to how important that information is. If you have a meeting, and accounts hasn't finished finalising their numbers, and 90% of your report in that meeting is analysing the numbers from the report, there's no point going to that meeting. Chase the information as best you can? that would be my answer.
Wow I wish I saw this video when I first started interviewing, it would have saved me many embarrassing interview answers back when interviewing for internships/co-ops in school
I've had a few superdays with Goldman and here were the questions that were asked in my HireVue (from what I remember) 1. Why are you interested in Goldman Sachs 2. What challenges did you encounter in your current role and what did you do to become successful? 3. Your manager asks you to submit a report of high importance to the client. However, after submitting the report, you realize that you made a mistake in a section that no one will likely read. What will you do? 4. How will you go about working in a new team where you don't know anyone and how will you succeed?
@@antihero22 I said to notify your manager and correct the mistake. If you think you can get away with small mistakes, then you'll inevitably make larger ones that won't go unnoticed. It's best to leave the ego at the door.
I just did my HireVue and some of these questions were on there. I got walk me through your resume and you have a new teammate that join your team, what would you do? I really appreciate your video, I was nervous but prepping helps. How long does it take to hear from them after the Hirvue?
I hope you got the job. I just applied and get a request to do a hirevue as well. I hope I make it in. I’m kinda bad at interviewing because I’m not quick on my feet to answer.
Question 14 is hilarious. All of my friends who work at GS now, cheated their arses off at uni. My manager at a BB would continuously come in drunk to work and HR did their best to brush it under the carpet (until she threw up on a client). But yeah for the sake of the interview please do make it seem like you have a moral compass. #satire
True story: in 2021 Goldman Sachs reached out to me and offered to go through their interview process for the investment banking division. They asked exactly those questions “why I wanted to join”. I said honestly I have no reason, you contacted me. I ended up getting an offer within 2 weeks and turned them down cause the base salary was too low. Those banks are not that cool anymore and I guess they know it. As my finance professor says Startup Founders are the new investment bankers of the 90s :)
LOL question 14 is a trick question. It is to test if you can lie under oath, when the time comes, which it will. They prefer people without a moral compass sharing the same values with others in the company but can convince outsiders that they do. You wouldn't want someone that thinks twice about wiping out a teacher's retirement fund if the firm's profits are on the line..
I had the exact same questions in the hirevue interview last year. Unfortunately, I failed haha. I said I would not do anything about the friend cheating.
I knew the answer to this cause in HS they had a similar question for grocery store job. You catch a coworker take $20 from the register, they say they'll put it back by the end of the day. What do you do? I said I wouldn't say anything as long as they put the money back by the end of the day. I didn't get that summer job but I knew what to say years later when I saw it again in the hirevue interview
Hey, another useful video! I know that I want to work in some sort of financial sales. Are there any sales roles at investment banks and if not, what jobs are out there? Keep up this content 👍
You might want to check sales roles in the field of market data. A lot of data providers (like Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters, etc) are always looking for salespeople to help them sell data to financial organizations. Google “market data sales”. Hope this helps :)
My biggest issue with hirevue is that questions could be overlapping. If in first question which is "walk me through your CV" i have already spoken about an achievement and then next question is "what is the biggest achievement you are proud of ?" then i really dont know what to do....hirevue are nothing like actual interviews....i am really trying to figure out what to do if i dont have answer to their question.
