Great comparison, I was on the fence between a ZR2 and an AT4X. Built both with same options and it's $7000 more for the Canyon, they're both great but for the little things you mentioned I will stick with the ZR2 and save $7000. I also prefer the Colorado look more.

To be honest I ordered it before I even saw the AT4X but I still like the ZR2 better so I'm pretty stoked.

Totally agree I too just got a sand dune 2024 Chevy colorado Zr2. Totally different looking vehicle than the other colorados. As you mentioned, there is a big price difference between the zr2 and at4x. I drove a Denali gmc canyon, and it was definitely a nice vehicle. Heads up display us nice had in a BMW and wife's VW atlas but not a deal breaker and not worth 6-7 k more plus the zr2 is definitely better looking. Both canyons and colorados are great trucks, and you can't go wrong with either one. I went from. A full size 6 inch lifted Sierra and was afraid I would hate the mifsize. I absolutely love it and will probably never go back to a full size just because of the ease of daily driving.

This truck is on my short list. I am waiting to see the '24 Tacoma first. The only irritant for me is the lack of a physical head light control switch. A power rear slider should also be included at this price point. Nice job on the walk around.

I honestly can’t wait for mine to be delivered (hopefully sooner than later!), but I may have to wait a bit longer because I got the AT4X. Either way, I’ll be really happy with it arrives. Got it in Onyx Black and it came with everything I wanted, or needed, on a truck.

I agree. I ordered the GMC Canyon Elevation because I only need 2wd and still get the higher lift, best engine, tailgate locker, up scale power pkg options and towing pkg plus step sides. And painted on bed liner. Plus with my GM discount it was only 39.4k before taxes and that included destination charges and all options.

so my Z71 which has basically everything needed is 48k, and a base AT4 is 48-51k, when i added the same packages the AT4 is now 52-54k..... also you said you dont have the bose, which is 500$, the bed liner which can be anywhere between 400-1000$ so really its over 3k difference with your own numbers or a 5-6k difference based on local values... still now i know mine doesnt have the HUD which is gonna bother me haha, good video tho!

    Great video.
I think the GMC just looks better. I don't necessarily like the side markers, but I think I would tint them with the headlight tint to blend them in with the fender flares.
The biggest issues I have with both the Colorado and the Canyon is the fact, after spending over $50K on this vehicle it lacks a LOT of little things.
No HomeLink (built in garage door opener)
No power sliding rear window. (maybe on a regular cab but a crew cab)
No diesel anymore. (way better MPG's)
No 6 cylinder anymore. (they should have an option for a turbocharged V6)
The other issue I have with these... They are just overpriced... I can get a 2-year-old 1500 with the diesel for about the same price, that has all the options missing on these gorgeous trucks.
I admit they are gorgeous and I kind of want one... Just having a hard time pulling the trigger on it.
I miss my Diesel Colorado and the 28 MPG's (that's with the bigger tires and lift kit)
But it too was missing those other options and that drove me nuts.
I'm mean what's the point of having a no powered rear sliding window?
You have to pull over to open and close it? STUPID!!!

    • @ToddCotta
      @ToddCotta  Год назад +1

I feel the larger issue is, GM thinks because it is a smaller truck it should be allowed less features than the Silverado and Sierra. They don't want to have their smaller trucks outselling the big two. I think that the same effort should be made for both styles to better the overall brand quality. If it is a AT4 Sierra or Canyon the options should be the same. That would be what the customers want. Plus a folding rear seat and under seat storage would have been nice. Thanks for watching....

    2023 Colorado
    1) There is no way to manually turn on or off the headlights or the door locks.
So if the battery dies, the hood is locked, how do you open the door locks, so you can open the hood, so you can charge the battery?
2)The V-6 and the Duramax Diesel that were available in the previous Colorado are no longer offered in 2023.
Which engine is more likely to run over 250,000 miles the 4-cylinder or the Duramax Diesel?

I would of got the AT4X if not for the white interior trim bits you can't option out of. Hard enough to keep my truck clean and that white would never stay clean IMO.. I did have a 24 taco sport on order but saved $7k buying the Canyon over the taco. I love the proven motor over the taco's unproven power plant, the cost saving was another added plus, along with a useable back seating area 😉..

I think the GMC truck has a higher expectation for the buyer than a Chevrolet truck. That's why you see people more content with just a basic options on a Chevrolet when they should be premium options that aren't provided on a GMC. Spend more. You should have the best options. But GM doesn't get that message.

If you have the engine running with the key in your pocket, are you able to leave the vehicle, lock the drivers door from the outside? For instance if you run in to a convenience store and you don't want to shut your vehicle off but want to lock it while you run in real quick?

    • @ToddCotta

I just ran out and checked...... Here's the deal. Closing the door and leaving the motor running, you can lock the door. but not with the button on the door. You must use the key fob lock button. Remember that it will only idle for 5-8 minutes until the motor automatically shuts off. It is a safety thing and fuel thing. Hope this helps.

I can't remember if it was mentioned, but you cannot order the Z71 with the better tires. Same with the Elevation. And the Z71 also has only a 1" lift vs the 2" lift the AT4 has.
I'd actually be happy with a Trail Boss except that it has one fatal flaw -- you cannot get it with a telescopic steering wheel. I like having the steering wheel pulled towards me so I can rest my arms while I drive down the interstate. I will still check it out though. The off-road capability for the money can't be beat. And if you're going to pinstripe your new truck, it's better to do it with a less expensive one. My wife, however, would prefer something a bit more luxurious.
For the price of the AT4 comparably loaded to a ZR2 Colorado, you can get the ZR2 for only a couple of thousand more. I thought the ZR2 was a no-brainer, but then I had an epiphany when it comes to the lockers: what manually must be turned on must manually be turned off. I would forget. And even if I always remembered to turn them off, I wouldn't trust others to always remember. So for the same reasons I wouldn't buy a truck without Auto 4WD, I think it's best to simply have an automatic locking rear diff. Having a front locker would be overkill for my needs. I have zero desire to do any rock climbing that might seriously damage my vehicle.
So yeah, the AT4 Canyon is now at the top of my wish list. Anything less has a fatal flaw and anything more and I'm paying more money for features I actually don't want. 20" wheels... (Don't get me started.)

l like your thought process. Yes it can be a difficult choice. the ZR2 is nice, but if you don't need Baja equipment, then the AT4 is the sweet spot, plus you can get HUD, Power passenger seat, side markers and nicer interior. Thanks for the comment!

Maybe it's just me, but when it comes to mods, i think it suits the z71 better. Like adding on a sports bar and bull bar just seems weird to put it on the at4. Great video! I don't like how I set down too low in the driver's seat in the Tacoma so it will not be any fun to drive for the 6 hour trip to richmond,va to visit with my adult daughter.

I would add that on some of the Colorado trims, the plaster fender flares have insets (theoretically for reflectors or lighting), but nothing is in there - just seems a waste of space (although clearly done for costs savings). There a few indicators of that in the Colorado that the owners might realize after purchase and comparison when they find out what was left off of the Colorado but the GMC got all the goodies.

Everyone must has a passion or hobby. I don't hop rocks, but I do travel on forest roads to go camping and spending time in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

My loaded sand dune metallic Z71 should be in any day. I'm sure I'll love it but you pointed out some good things that I wish I had considered before ordering. Another interesting thing I heard is that the center console and padding around your legs and dashboard are all leather in the Canyon where as they're a rough scratchy material on the Z71 Colorado. I'll know more if that actually becomes an issue but could be annoying long term

I don’t want to trade gladiator in. Instead I’m looking at 4wd work truck gm or Toyota to keep miles down on gladiator. I’ve noticed with price hikes the best value has been 3/4 ton gas engine trucks. Pretty sure 2500 z71 gas is same price as my gladiator, of course it has less options.

That sounds like a good idea. Just do your research and check in a wide radius for the truck you want! Thanks for watching!

eh I wouldn't say you get "more for your money", I'd say you get "more for more money". also, the colorado is wider than the at4. taken directly from their websites:
width w/o mirrors AT4: 72.40 Z71: 74.90 in. lastly, when I priced them both out, comparable options, the at4 was just under $5k more. so not an insignificant difference. still, a tough choice though!

    • @ToddCotta

There is something wrong with the numbers. AT4 and trail boss has 76.30 in total width W/O mirrors and 2 inch track width wider than Z71 (74.90) which does not have fender flares. I will have to go physically measure them to make sure. Thanks for watching!

@@ToddCotta where are you getting your #s from? I pulled mine straight off gmc and chevy directly. but I also was wondering if any of those #'s were simply fender flares. that would be a little misleading if it was.

Take a look at Chevy website. The lower model "Trail Boss" is 2 inches wider. That compares to the AT4. The numbers are incorrect on the GMC website. That is where I am getting the numbers. Have a great day!

BUT will the 4banger turbo hold up and go 200k miles without any major repairs???? after all, it is a GM product and not Toyota or Honda Quality

Just look at the chevy dealer and tell them, add the high output programing or the deal is off. Watch how fast that truck gets programed.

I ordered a Z71, but bought a Trail Boss (41k). I looked at all 3. The TB was the best value. Everything you need and nothing you don't and priced accordingly. I think you will see in time it will have best resale to boot. I would rank them like so. Value - 1. TB 2. AT4 3. Z71 Looks 1. TB 2 AT4 3. Z71 Interior 1. AT4 2. Z71 3. TB I like the Canyon, but the GMC badges, lights on the sides, and over the top grill just was not for me, but I do like the AT4 wheels the best. The TB should have a painted front bumper. The TB lack of LED didn't bother me as the Z71 and AT4 LEDs looked cheap to me. The standard stereo is trash, but the Bose didn't sound very good. If you like audio you are better off going else where for an amp and some decent components anyways.

@@ToddCotta I am planning to debadge my TB. Just waiting to get a quote on painting the front bumper. I think for me the GMC brand is something I think is not worth shouting about. It is not like being a Mercedes who also like to have a big badge. (I am coming from a MB GL550 - almost the opposite end of the spectrum)
