@@Cay30 not a matter of wishing - a male catholic sovereign ALWAYS as a matter of protocol bows his head in the presence of the supreme pontiff (and kisses the ring as any catholic is supposed to). the consorts (or female soveregns) perform a very low curtsy. there are videos on youtube of queen sophia of spain doing this splendidly wearing a beautiful white andaluzian style mantilla, as well as of the late princess grace of monaco. this is not considered as diminishing their authority, sovereignity or, indeed precedence since, "secularly" speaking, pope is just another sovereign, so in that respect they are equals, but it is intended as an act of respect to his spiritual authority.

As an American, I can rightly say the following: Many Americans and other citizens of republics often find the tradition of bowing or curtsying to a monarch to be frivilous at best and offensive at worst. But what they don't or can't seem to undetstand is that the monarch (and family) are SYMBOLS of the nation, much as a flag is the symbol of a country and a Bible or cross is a symbol of a religion. And a lot of people go to great lengths to make gestures to show respect to flags, Bibles and crosses. So when one curtsies or bows to a monarch, they are showing their respect -- not for the person (alone) -- but for the nation they represent. And moreover, doesn't it seem more sensible to offer respect to a living, breathing PERSON, as opposed to a piece of cloth, a hunk of wood, or a book?

In the western world, in the 1920s skirt hems came up, for the first time. This was a sign of freedom and liberation for women.
Flappers would swing their legs around in a new dance style to show their lower legs off. By the 1940s most skirts had descended back to what is known as “tea length“ or mid calf. More women were able to wear trousers for things, such as horse riding. Part of the great freedom of the 1960s, in the western world, was pulling skirts all the way up to the upper thigh. This was both shocking and exciting and flew in the face of , What was for many, false modesty. The idea was that women need not be ashamed. By the 1970s both full length skirts that touched the ground and skirts that were so short that they came with matching underpant covers were in fashion. In the 1980s fashion it was either the mini skirt or long and straight. but, with dresses, the bigger the better in the 1980s. Since then, all skirt lengths have been in fashion. Tea length skirts have made a huge comeback in the last decade. Floor length skirts, known as maxi skirts, are rarely worn by royals and aristocracy, unless it is part of a formal gown. Maxi skirts are seldom seen in an urban setting, mostly out of practicality I would think.

We should not consider, because it is Royalty and dignitaries who usually carry out the act of hand kissing, that they are getting it right.

@@gidzmobug2323 - I’ve been researching that Pathe film and it was in 1954. Elizabeth was Queen. The woman the Queen seemed to bow to, did not look familiar.
From all I’ve read Salassie was an Emporer, more than a King……so by royal decorum, a bow/curtsy would be appropriate. Maybe the Queen, Princess Margaret and Philip were just being exceptionally polite in that situation. Wish I could figure out who the woman was.
