At this level it's no that much of a rebuild, it's more of a... Build. That man is no longer wearing Redwings, he's wearing Bedo's Leatherworks Iron Rangers, as he has improved every part that was lacking before. Nice job.
I do a lot of business with another cobbler who has become very famous for his TokTok and You Tube videos. Every video he posts people are asking prices. It’s difficult for him to quote random prices because people have sent him in boots that are in much worse condition than whatever the ones in the video are then the customer expects to get the same price.
If you send your boots in like Jk boots or whites that have discounted rebuild programs, the uppers are the only part not replaced. They are basically new boots but technically in this business is a rebuild I guess. All because of that one piece of leather that the laces ride on is reused
At first I thought, $700, that seems like a lot. Then I thought of the amount of labor, the very high level of skill required to do it right, the machines and materials that are needed to do the work, and that the boot will be custom and built much better than when they originally came from the factory. You do incredible work.
$700 is a lot but he completely customized the shoe. The customer has a bespoke item now. Your right. Bedo does AMAZING work. The $700 was worth every Penny for this sort of work. ❤
@@01ls1z28dabx Agreed. There's just something so calming and therapeutic about watching something being repaired, rebuilt, having new life breathed back into it.
never thought about that but yes I totally agree. Its the camera angles, the tint and brightness of the room, and him explaining everything. It never changes and if you watch more and more videos his voice and everything gets very familiar and the reveal at the end is always bad ass. I look forward to every video that he puts out.
It's great being able to do what you love to pay the bills. But with that comes a different set of headaches and stresses that are far beyond working for someone else. When you work for someone else you're not responsible for anything other than the job you were hired to do. When you work for yourself, every little detail becomes your life. Doing what you love usually ends up with owning your business and it's a different stress. But, in the end it's still great being able to do what I love and at the pace I set with the hours I want to work.
@@andybaldman nah. My business is fine, but the stresses are just different. I'm not saying it's really bad or anything. But it is more serious when the money in the company is coming out of my pocket. (I put my entire life savings into getting a shop built and supplying it. Plus I'm only on my second year of this. It's not as bad as it was when I first started my leather making journey. To add to all this though, I was a caregiver for my grandparents. My grandfather passed in 2016 (damn cancer!) And my grandmother passed in 2020 (dementia). Then follow that up with an improperly filed trust by them made it so I had to sell the house that the entire family knew was going to me, decided to do the money grab instead. I lived in CA, and no way in hell could I afford to buy anything there, and I really wanted out of that shitbox. I moved to Montana right in the heart of the pandemic, and all the properties I had been looking at prior to the chaos tripled in price over that summer alone. Needles to say I couldn't get into anything I wanted but I'm not finished with life yet. My sister (only family left beside a couple cousins imo)has a chunk of land that I live on for the time being. Built a place (myself) and started a business all at the same time. It was stressful. Top it off with 70% of my orders come in during peak tourist season and there's less tourists this year by quite a bit. It's just all bad timing really. Two years earlier or two years later and it would be a much easier story to tell
The casual confidence that you have isn't great for RUclips algorithms but as someone who appreciates trade skill, I am in awe of your talents. You took trash and remade it, not repaired it. That is a master of of ones craft. Well done sir.
*It's nice to see many people here appreciating the boots being rebuilded! The results look awesome! Many times over at the JK Boots and Nick's Boots RUclips channels, whenever they show rebuild videos, there's loads of people saying "Why not just buy a new pair of boots?". Their rebuild costs are significantly lower than the actual costs of their new boots, according to their ordering sites. Many of those people forget to realize, it's what the customer wanted, and there's sentimental value!* *I know the boots from those two channels are different to the ones on Steve's channel (and its two slightly different places). My point is that those channels are severely lacking the appreciation for their craftsmanship and expertise. Here on Steve's channel, there's so much more appreciation for his craftsmanship and expertise! People in the comments care about not wasting their shoes/boots. But over there, there seems to be a lot of people who would instead, throw their boots away lol 😅! It's just nice to see people here who would rather extend the life of their footwear, instead of throwing them into a landfill. I can already hear Steve's voice in the comments on those channels. "Hey man, just buy a pair of new boots!", "Hey man, how much of the original boots are left? I'm outta here!" lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣* *Amazing work Steve! Let's continue!*
That's a very good price. I just finished an apprenticeship at a small cowboy boot maker (Stewart Boot) in Tucson. Our off-the -shelf boots were $595 handmade. It takes more work to repair than to fabricate from scratch. When you manufacture, you have standardization and you have efficient regular flow on your side. Yes, effectively you are building a one-off custom boot from scratch, but you have the added labor of carefully disassembling the old one and calculating how to incorporate those parts with the new. It's easier to have all new patterns and molds.
Being an admirer of great craftsmanship I kind of enjoy watchin' (watch) repair video's. Now I find myself watching a talented cobbler wearing a different watch on every job 🙂. How cool is that?
Construction wise you made a superb job, Steve but the design in particular is one of the very best that I've ever seen in your videos. So unique, modern and classic at the same time.
What a transformation! Since I have been watching your videos over the years, I have a much better appreciation for quality footwear, especially boots. Take care Steve.
Wow! Here i am, yet again amazed with my jaw stuck open, possibly drooling, at how incredible your craftsmanship is! Dude, i cant even begin to imagine how much time this took so $700 was most definitely a steal! Outstanding work Steve! I really need to start planning my trip to Virginia to come and meet you! I must shake your hand!
Nice boots. As for the cost? I'm a great believer that there's two things in life a person should be spending good money on and that's bed and boots (or footwear generally), because if you're not in one - the chances are that you're in the other.
They look fantastic. The only time I paid $750 for a pair of boots, was a pair of Lucchese Full Quil Ostrich boots. That was about 21 years ago, they still look great.👍🏻👍🏻
I wasn’t sure about the buffalo hide choice at first but once you brought the original leather color back it was outstanding…as usual. Your work is impeccable!
I love this channel...!!!...Another tradesman and artisan that "sharpens" his disposable blades...I think I've used 6 in the last 3 years...LMAO...!!!...They take a great edge fast and last way longer than most think they can...BEAUTIFUL WORK...on these boots. This is how products should be made and taken care of...
This is nothing short of Amazing. This is a new boot. When I saw what you were working with, I said, "No Way." But you are the man! I watch a few other cobblers on RUclips but you, by far, are the best.
Stunning work. 10/10. I love the final product. The honey colored sole was perfect with the leather tones. They look fantastic and are going to last a long long time.
It's so much fun to watch these transformations. Initially I did think, "how much? he could just go buy a new pair for less." But the thing is, he got a pair of custom boots that will far outlast anything new that he could purchase. I know a bit about making things by hand, and after I saw that you'd made custom lasts I thought (not that I know anything about being a shoemaker)" oh, he didn't charge enough for that." A pair of custom, hand-made boots would likely ring in at about 1000.- 1500. or more. You gave him a great deal. Great job as usual.
I love buffalo hide leather for its appearance, texture, flexibility and durability. I have a couple pairs of footwear made with buffalo (handmade for my size 17 feet) and never regretted choosing buffalo. Fantastic looking boots, wonderful craftsmanship..
Those are gorgeous. I can see the value of keeping something from your old boots that mean something to you and repurposing it into new boots, ESPECIALLY those new boots.
Excellent work, as always. Stylistically, they aren't my cup of tea, but hey, I'm not wearing them so that doesn't matter. Your craftsmanship is always so incredibly impressive, and I'm blown away as usual. Love your videos!
Steve, I think this is one of your best jobs. You're a magician. Re. the price, just like you said, it's his money and he has a totally unique boot now. They're beautiful.
My feet have flattened out with my Age and I started using the 3/4 orthotics like that in my Cowboy Boots so I could actually start wearing them again without any Pain. Great Video as usual fantastic reconstruction.
You can’t compromise quality or comfort if you can afford it get it nothing is more relaxing than having ur feet in heaven as you walk , nice work mate
You did it again. You're The Master!. Excellent work of art. I think a new pair of boots of that quality would have cost much more. A bargain. Good 👍 job

@@maddawgnoll yet said JK boots uses a lot of leather for the uppers. Indeed it's more new than old, but saving some than nothing is still something.

Definitely.
I can't say I could afford this, but the work is excellent.

It's not only the price and work done on the boots but also the emotional attachment and good memories.
You may not understand this though.
Love it, Steve! And c'mon, $700 is downright reasonable for this level of craftsmanship.

As others have noted, that is far beyond a simple repair. That is custom work. Very well done.
Those boots look fantastic and I think $700 is a very decent price for what is essentially hand made, custom, unique boots.
I've always been envious of individuals who can make a living at something they enjoy doing. Many of us work just to pay bills.
