    RCA missed the boat on Elvis in the 70s. A LOT of great songs 73-76. Country music was changing, and so was Elvis. If Elvis would've lived, I believe he would've ruled the country charts in the 80s.

      Moody Blue album peaked at #28 on Billboard 200, just before his death. It was his highest charting studio album in 6 years since Elvis Country album. It will rise to #3 after he death. The Moody Blue single itself was a Top 10 hit in the UK. Despite Elvis didn't perform a single concert in the UK during his 23-year career, people out there were still buying his records. That's fantastic. His records were sold really not bad in the 70's, especially compared to his contemporaries, like Chuck Berry or Rick Nelson.

    David , Loving Arms is one of my favorites . When Elvis sang he'd put his heart into each song...whether he felt up to it or not. Be it rock n roll...ballads..country or gospel. Yes, Elvis had it all. I loved to hear him speaking at the beginning. Such a melancholy way to end my evening. Thank you and God Bless you David. ⚡️💖 TCB

    David, I so agree with you that Dec. ‘73 at Stax was such a powerful session for Elvis. He was recharged, in comparison to the unfocused and lackluster session that July. “Loving Arms” is one of my favorite Elvis songs as is his his version of the wistfully melancholic adult contemporary classic “Good Time Charlie’s Got The Blues” which he also recorded during this session. Great perspective and great stuff from you on this one!

    Elvis was more than Rock n Roll, his amazing rendition of a ballad was incredible, he got so much emotion into the song that you believed it. Loving arms is truly great track and it is such a !gem" to hear out takes, any Elvis fan just loves these moments to hear something different Stax in my opinion was another incredible highlight in Elvis career, maybe it did not satisfy the critics who wanted him to do more Rock, but it satisfied Elvis because he was singing the songs he wanted to sing and it certainly satisfied this fan. Great upload thanks.

    I love listening to the alt takes too. I can't actually remember what was dubbed/over dubbed or not dubbed at all on these stax recordings as its been a while for me but for years whenever I'm looking up an elvis track on RUclips I automatically add the word "take" to my search. I usually enjoy listening to these alt takes as they give you a stripped back and authentic sound compared to a lot of the masters which, for me, sometimes have too much layered on. The horns, the backup singers and even Elvis's voice being pushed down in the mix. Prime example would be the legendary take six of Suspicious Minds. Some others... Stranger in my own hometown and I washed my hands in muddy water. I'm really off topic now...! Honky Tonk Angel from these sessions is fantastic.

    • @ElvisistheMan_
      @ElvisistheMan_  Год назад +4

      I’ll do the same thing! I like the alt. takes after these years I listen to the masters, and I also like the undubbed! The horns and all that is not necessary.

    • @mrsongman
      @mrsongman Год назад +2

      @@ElvisistheMan_ Check out Like a Baby take 2. The acoustic is louder than in the master. It always sounded to me like Elvis's playing style but I wasn't 100% sure as the playing is also much more adventurous than we are used to from Elvis. More licks thrown in and he's up and down the fretboard. It is him though! If you check out take 1, Elvis plays the intro on the acoustic and then between takes 1 and 2 he shyly says "I can't make it...y-you get the intro." to someone else. Very cool!

    The Colonel, RCA, and Elvis' inability to take charge of his career were all big reasons he had apathy and lost interest. Can you imagine if Elvis dumped Col and RCA and with a Steve Binder type manager who would not let him get away with being complacent, what a force of nature he would have been. The overseas tours, great music, and a good movie role....he would not have been bored bc he would have been challenged. It may have saved his life. Thanks David for your videos. I always enjoy them.

    • @paulandrew6457
      @paulandrew6457 Год назад

      What did Steve Binder do after the 68 Special? Not a lot. Elvis did plenty. These songs were too downbeat to be hits they were more about how Elvis was feeling when he recorded them and he picked songs that he told a tales that he related too. The 72 -77 songs tell us more about Elvis as an artist and man as does tone in his voice. Its not Hound Dawg for girls its better and more adult.

    • @DeenaLancaster
      @DeenaLancaster Год назад +2

      @paulandrew6457 .....Did you watch the documentary on the Making of the 1968 special?? Steve Binder gave him a voice and fought the Col. I am in no way putting Elvis down. I just know he had dreams for other things, and I wish those opportunities were not taken from him. He deserved better.

Everyone gets a frog in their throat now and again. I personally find the recording process interesting. You can listen and tell how hard they worked! I sometimes find some of the out-takes better than what was released! (There were a lot of other artists who covered this song at the time, Olivia Newton-John was also one)

    The Stax Sessions included some really good bluesy tunes that could've been killer. Unfortunately Elvis' voice might have been at its all-time low. It's weak and thin and shaky and he even wanders off key. It's hard to believe that he is the same singer who was the best vocalist in the world ten years earlier. Can you imagine him singing some of these tunes like Three Corn Patches, If You Don't Comeback in like 1967-68? They would've been as good as Big Boss Man and High Heel Sneakers. You mentioned some of his issues and I think it's obvious that it really took a toll on his voice (drugs, poor diet, overwork, smoking). Take Good Care of Her is another example of him losing his vibrato, resonance and power. It's sad. He should've been in rehab and been resting. Still my man and still the GOAT.

    The first sessions with the Memphis boys wasn’t there were in awe, it’s that they noticed the unhealthy difference in Elvis than the 69 sessions years when he was so enthusiastic and energetic . It struck them sadly as they lived him.

    I believe Elvis liked playing the smaller studios, the ASS sessions of '69 are Elvis at his very best, beyond compare, soaring like an eagle free from the movie contracts and sound tracks. The ftd of those sessions is one of my favourite albums, wearing that loved on look, true love travels on a gravel road, long black limousine and of course the raw early version of suspicious minds (imo the best version before it got sexed up with the overdubs, although I like that too lol ). Like we've said before Elvis was never scared to share the stage, and even in the interview here he credits his band members as inspiring and he's sincere when he says that, it's from the heart. Likewise in these places especially he soaks up the energy from all the artists that have played there before him it's in the walls and he feels it. Maybe in some way it reminds him of Sun records, I mean at Sun it won't have passed him by that he was recording in the same room that Howlin' wolf sang everybody's in the mood !

    You are right - again! The Material was really good, in fact l think it is still one of Elvis' best recording sessions... but RCA's strategy Was and will be a mystery to me.. of course l know that it was more and more difficult to bring Elvis into a Studio... but l am sure that there would been other way's to make him "coming back" for recording... if you listen to the Outtakes then you hear the real Elvis.. they add so much overdubbs on his records... for some Songs l think it is ok, but not for every Song... l love the songs!!

    Can't remember off hand, but was it July or December 1973 when Elvis attempted "We Had It All"?

    • @ElvisistheMan_
      @ElvisistheMan_  Год назад +1

      I would guess that it was July. Cathy West Moreland said that when I was played the actual record before he recorded his version, he saw how everybody got very emotional and Elvis realized that he couldn’t top it, so he didn’t try..
