I was initially confused by use of the term "double crochet" when the yarn was being pulled through more than 2 times. Brain shifted to "triple" and I was able to follow along easier
I think use US terms. I was taught by family how to do the single and double stitch many years ago, and there was no distinction of US or UK. I more recently learned the triple stitch where you pull the yarn through the loops 3 times, which is looks like is also done for this type of overlay work. (I had been using the triple stitch to add pattern variation in single color scarves)

I heard about the CAL mosaic crochet Christmas blanket. This is my first time using mosaic and your tutorial is very (!) helpful. Unfortunately I had problems at the beginning and end (I "lost..." stitches), so I thought it would be good to add "normal" stitches first and last. Now I counted correctly and the pattern is visible (wow! I get it), but the whole thing rotates to the left (looks more like a trapezoid, not a square). Will this "gone away" with more rows or is it "a sign" for a mistake?
Same for me! Unsure if I need to do another little practice or if I should hope and pray that I've got it now and won't lose stitches on the bigger blanket....
That depends. You can leave it as fringe or use the envelop border. Neither of them requires you to weave them in. And it saves yarn vs the inset version ❤️
You don’t say how to start. How do you end the rows? How many stitches do you chain to start? 13? Do you have a chain row then a single crochet row of the white?

My pattern is in US English terms 😀 you must be thinking about UK English terms for crochet

I like this way but having to cut your yarn every row is a pain.
That depends. You can leave it as fringe or use the envelop border. Neither of them requires you to weave them in. And it saves yarn vs the inset version ❤️
Why is there a red row on the right .. but not on the left .. it comes out unfinished … there’s a line missing
It's just a swatch. It's actually a section of a repeat. You could make it longer on the left by repeating the entire pattern again. Makes sense?
You don’t say how to start. How do you end the rows? How many stitches do you chain to start? 13? Do you have a chain row then a single crochet row of the white?
Please check the link in the description that has the written instructions. They (written and video) work together. for the best success.
12 chains .. then start in first chain and do the 12 … but there’s a row of red ending the pattern on the left .. so it comes out u finished .
So.... 13 chains?
