- WHAT? NO ENDS? Yup! You heard me! Learn how to do my revolutionary technique that I call “Continuous” Overlay Mosaic Crochet (or COM for short), where there are virtually NO ENDS to weave in! You’ll learn the secrets for how to do this new Overlay Mosaic Crochet technique including how to begin & finish rows without all those pesky ends, how to make my special stitch: the Anchored double crochet (Adc) to eliminate gaps on the back of your work and where to insert your hook for successful Overlay Mosaic Crochet projects without all those ends!

To calculate the extra yardage you’ll need to make your Overlay Mosaic Crochet projects with my COM technique with NO ENDS, multiply the width of the rows in the pattern by the number of rows in each color. For instance, if the project is 36” wide (1 yard) and the project has a total of 180 rows (90 rows in each of 2 colors), you’ll need an extra 90 yards of each of the 2 colors to make your project with the COM technique. That’s not bad considering the fact that you won’t have all those ends on the left and right edges of your project to deal with!
Note: My 2 new Overlay Mosaic Crochet blanket patterns listed above already include the extra yardage in the materials list, so you won’t need to calculate it for these Mosaic blankets!

Hi Cheryl. I'm glad you found my video, too! Just make sure to adjust the carried yarn before starting each row. That way, it won't be too tight or too loose when you start each row. You won't need to work a double border on your huge blanket, saving yarn and time! Happy crocheting to you now and always!
I can see myself using this method for a smaller project. But for a larger blanket or something like that, I think I would end up using more yarn than I'd want by carrying it through each row. Thanks for sharing the idea!

Yes. This technique uses more yarn. However, if you typically crochet a double border on a blanket, you use more yarn for that. I think this technique would actually use less yarn than a double border does. And as you said, it would be great for smaller projects!

It's like overlay and tapestry crochet together! I love carrying yarn like that, because it's so much more secure, & does not show through. I never would've thought to do the first trick you showed with the yarn ball - genius! ...as is the technique you came up with for the anchored double crochet!
Yes it is like Tapestry Crochet and Overlay Mosaic Crochet put together! It'll only work when you use my Anchored dc, though. Otherwise the stitches behind regular dc wouldn't cover the carried yarn! I hope you enjoy using this COM technique in your Overlay Mosaic Crochet!

I wish I had found this video sooner! It would have saved me weeks of work. I was working on a patchwork blanket with several individual mosaics stitches together with the ends hidden on the backside. I thought I'd crochet a back panel to hide all the ends on the back, and once I finished, I realized it would be too heavy and it wouldn't be as functional. I spent so much time trying to figure out what I was going to do and trying to cover up all the ends. Had I known about this, my blanket would have looked so much neater. Amazing method! Started my first mosaic crochet project today and was disappointed in how it was turning out with all the ends. Searched RUclips for an tailless mosaic method and found your video. Luckily I was only 8 rows into my project and could just restart it using your method. Thank you, the difference is huge! I’ll never not do it this way.

You are awesome!!! I am new to mosaic crochet after crocheting 60+ years. Love it! Am on my third in-the-round Apache Tears zippered purse. I didn't like how much thicker the worked over color change tails made that part of the piece. My solution on this biggest purse is to make the tails long enough so that the two tails meet! I tie a tight double knot to keep the tails from pulling loose later. Problem solved! I KNOW I would not have thought to apply that method to a flat piece! Now I will, thanks very much to your inventive mind and patient, concise teaching! I am your newest subscriber!

For smaller projects this is an amazing idea but for a huge blanket it will eat way too much extra yarn. And I really like the finish a double border lends to my blankets. 😊

I am home taking care of my mom now and wanted to pick up some crafting just to keep my mind active. So, I picked crochet back up. I worked through a couple of projects but the one pattern that just baked my noodle was the granny square. During the pandemic I wrestled with that darn pattern and finally got it! I started working on a coaster and it came out ok so just to make sure it was not a fluke, I made another and another and before I knew it, my coaster project has turned into a ...well it's probably a queen size afghan now ha ha. My husband is also the comic relief (sometimes)

The mass majority of my squares look the one on your website ..a few of them though...not so much ha ha It's infuriating because I didn't even realize the mistakes until I started putting border color on them and then I caught it. Oh well, that's how you learn.
For a scarf or even a pillowcase, the additional yarn used this way is pretty negligible! For a blanket, it's obviously substantial, but as you say, the time saved is totally worth it anyway. I've been doing yarn carrying before, but your method for tying it off first is brilliant and makes it so much more neat and secure!

I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to as "Aztec Crochet". Are you talking about an Aztec looking design that is made in the Tapestry Crochet technique? Or one made in Tunisian Crochet with cross stitches on it? Or one made with all sc, changing colors, as necessary, across each row?
I did a variation on this idea on my first mosaic crochet project yesterday, i hate weaving ends in and it's prevented me from finishing many projects. So i worked a tiny purse in the round, crocheted a decorative strap, and worked the cover flap almost identically to this. Four ends for the whole thing. I've done virtually no color work in the twenty years I've crocheted, but this technique makes it attainable.

@@TheCrochetArchitect it looks a lot better too, I think, and it's a lot more secure. I have four little ones and good solid, simple finishing techniques are absolutely essential in my household, so I don't have extra mending demands on top of finishing! The body of a project is fun, to do and to watch, but my girls who are learning to crochet and knit don't have enough patience just to watch me weave in more than a few ends! Most of their doll clothes are hairy scary🤣

Came across your video looking for patterns. When I was 6 my Grams taught me to crochet... when changing colors this is how she taught me to do it. She referred to it as a color switchback which her mother taught her to do. I’ve been doing it this way for 56 years now. It’s nice to finally know the name of this method. Thank you for posting this

Have you been carrying the unused color across the row from the end to the beginning to use it again at the beginning of the next row of that color in regular crochet projects, or in Overlay Mosaic Crochet projects? Or do you make your color changes the way I make them in my video #37 for changing colors when working 1-row stripes? I invented this method for changing colors in Overlay Mosaic Crochet a few years ago to avoid all the tails at the beginning and end of each row when doing Overlay Mosaic Crochet. I named my technique Continuous Overlay Mosaic (COM) Crochet just this year. I haven't seen anyone use this technique for regular crochet (not Overlay Mosaic Crochet) in the 45+ years I've been crocheting and it's not in any crochet books that I have (and I have a lot of crochet books!).

@@TheCrochetArchitect My Grams taught me to do it when doing a two color yarn mosaic set of crocheted Apache tears pot holders for my moms birthday. She ran the thread back (She called it a color switchback) and then she crocheted over it so it was a constant front side crochet without thread hanging. Her mom (Ma Julie) taught her to do it and Grams taught me. She said that the only time to cut the yarn each time was when tassels were needed. She also did it when she made simple single or double crochet blankets or in her crocheted cotton thread curtains. Ma Julie taught all 5 of her girls to do it. My cousin Cindy and I are the only ones left that crochet in the family and we both do it.

the way I JUST finished the body of a really complicated mosaic crochet blanket.... its the first time ive ever done this technique and this video popped up in auto play. AS I SIT HERE WORKING THE DOUBLE BOARDER HATING EVERY MIINUTE OF IT lol
I feel your pain! I'm sorry that you didn't find my video sooner. But now that you've learned my COM technique (with the use of the anchored double crochet stitch), you can use it on all the other overlay mosaic crochet blankets that you make from here on out! I've never done a double border and I don't plan to ever do one! When you're doing my COM technique, make sure you adjust the carried yarn each time you start a row so it isn't too tight or too loose (NOT being too tight is the most important thing). That's the only time you can adjust the carried yarn. Once you've started that row, you can't adjust it any more. Happy COM crocheting to you!

Hi, love to do mosaic crochet and your videos. I have made a large blanket with one row using numerous colors of left over yarn. I use the overlay method but without having to lay the yarn right across the whole row, I overlay a 4 inch length of yarn at each end and crochet over or weave it in. great way of using up small amounts of yarn.
That sounds like a great way to hide your ends, Michelle! Do the right and left edges get elongated with that many ends covered up in the first/last 4 inches and not the center of the rows?

Absolutely fabulous technique. I need to practise this technique to get it into my brain. But I can see its purpose and bets the thousand or ends at the end. But I guess I do like the purpose of a double border but a double border with no ends would be perfect too! Thank you for sharing. Have saved it to try out the swatch.💖💖

To date I have done 2 double border mosaic crochet afghans. That tally almost ended at one - I HATED that dang border so much. It truly almost put me off mosaic crochet forever. For my second project I tried several other suggestions for dealing with the double border, each with a similarly disappointing ease of execution.
Then I came across a video here on RUclips called "Mosaic Crochet. How to hide tails as-you-go, tips and tricks" by BebaBlanket and decided to try her suggestions for cutting my ends and weaving in the tails as I worked. (I've done several crochet projects that involve carrying a second strand of yarn across a project, encasing the carried yarn within the stitches, so that technique was a comfortable, familiar one.) Still, my interpretation of the enclosing of the carried yarn left unwelcome bits peeking through on the drop down double crochet stitches. I resigned myself to declaring those pesky bits simply 'unique design elements'.
However, this RUclips video of yours popped up on one of my Facebook timeline feeds and I had to check it out.
Now I have to admit I'm a trifle obsessive-compulsive. Lights must be switched off if you're leaving a room. Shopping carts are always returned to their corrals. Toilet paper must feed over the top of the roll - never from underneath. That kind of thing. In my core, I am a firm believer in waste-not, want-not. 'Frugal' could well be my middle name. Knowing myself, I knew I could not ever be comfortable & relaxed at 'wasting' all that yarn your technique uses. (Granted, on my list of things I hate, wasting yarn ranks far below my detestation of double borders on mosaic crochet, but I knew it would just eat at me with every row.) Most folks it won't bother a bit. Me, it would.
BUT - it always seems that crocheting knowledge lands in a receptive mind when it is most needed. In watching this video, I became enchanted with your Anchored Double Crochet (ADC) stitch. Could this be the answer to my peeky, pesky bits I'd been wrestling with in weaving in my tails on the drop down double crochet mosaic stitches? Might I adapt this ADC for weaving in the tails on my non-bordered mosaic projects? The answer is YES!!!!!
I'm just ecstatic. No borders. No tails. No pesky, peeking bits.
I leave about 5-6" of yarn tail at both the beginning & ending of each row. At the beginning of rows I carry the tail along, encasing it within the stitches I'm making - using the techniques you show here. The ADC being the key for me. As the end of the row approaches I gently align the previous row's yarn tail along the top of the previous row & work it in that way as well. For me, this slight adaptation works and keeps the Frugal McDougal in me at peace. The combination of working yarn plus carried yarn does make for a bit wider/taller stitch than when I'm using only the one strand of yarn so I'm experimenting with switching to a smaller sized hook for those portions of the rows. Going down 0.5mm has seemed to make for less drastic size differences.
As a side note, I've read elsewhere that the ADC can be used to break up long runs of gaps on the back side of one's work when working a simple drop down double crochet. (I find that executing the ADC takes me a bit longer & out of the rhythm & flow of my pattern so I haven't been using it except when I'm working over yarn tails.) So experimenting to see if I liked that effect (non-gaping backside ... oh dear, now I've got visions of 'plumber's crack' in my head) I tried throwing in an ADC after every third stitch for long runs of drop down double crochet. It still slows my rhythm down, but no droopy loops either. Additionally, that little extra bit of yarn in the ADC stitch makes just enough of a difference that there's a decided little visual blip when it's worked in a line of regular drop down double crochet. Your mileage may vary, but the OCD side of me always works it every fourth stitch so those blips line up nicely and voilà - a welcome design feature!
Again, just a rather extended way of saying THANK YOU for sharing your skills & talents here. You've made my latest obsession with mosaic crochet one that I can enjoy without the impending feeling of doom I was getting whenever I contemplated that dreaded double border.
EDITED to add another method of eliminating the need for working the 'standard' technique of double borders in mosaic crochet. Just found this one a couple of days ago - haven't yet given it a whirl. But I visited the RUclips page for "How to sew down a double border trapping the ends as you go." by Woolthreadpaint. The video has no sound but shows her method for avoiding that dratted double border/slip stitch mess that seems so ubiquitous on most mosaic crochet pattern instructions. In a nutshell, what she does is make a regular old double crochet (DC) border (I expect you could also do a HDC stitch instead) that is twice the depth of the yarn end encasing envelope you need. My guess would be a minimum of a 4 row border - it all would be dependent on how wide you want your finished border to be. Then, you simply fold that border in half, trapping the cut yarn ends, and stitch the top edge to the bottom of the first row. (Aw, shucks - that sounds way more complicated than it is. Just watch the video.)

I envisioned my 'flow' at a standstill when making a large project like a blanket or sweater/duster...I have those same OCD compulsions as you. So you're fix is PERFECT for ME! I just discovered MOSAIC crochet 3 days ago (2/22/2021) after crocheting basic stitches for 5 decades! I was about to embark on the INSET Mosaic technique taught by Ellen Gormley here on YT - but decided to keep searching.
Meanwhile I'm also wondering if Mosaic SC rows can be worked in taller stiches - like HDC (my fave crochet stitch)...and DC rows worked in TC stitches... Wish me luck!
Welcome to the wonderful world of Mosaic Crochet! There's always something new to learn in crochet, no matter how long we've been crocheting (I've only been crocheting for about 4.5 decades, so you have me beat)! I'd be interested to hear how your experiments go with using taller stitches for Mosaic Crochet. I think using hdc might make the project lean a little too much, but it's possible they would work out just fine. It's so much fun to experiment with crochet and see what can be invented! Wow! I love the anchored dc. I’ve never seen that before. This video has taught me two new skills. I wonder how this will work with center-out squares.
I'm glad you've learned some new skills, Cathy. The Adc should work fine with mosaic squares worked in the round. I don't think you'd need to carry the unused yarn and work over it, though, because it's not finished off at the end of the rounds. You simply change colors in the last stitch of the round (or in the joining slip stitch) and work the next round with the other color. I hope this helps.

That's ok if you have a very narrow project but not when it's a wide project. I weave the end in the back loops with my crochet hook and then gets crocheted over when I crochet the next row. The end at the front of the row I just crochet over it as well.
Many people crochet over their ends. I find that my project gets a little stretched out at the side edges if I do that. It's nice to have options so we can pick which one we like best for the project we're making. If crocheting over your ends from each row is what works for you, keep doing it! The main goals of crocheting are to enjoy what you're doing, let the process of crocheting relieve your stress, and enjoy the finished project (or let the recipient enjoy it)!
