Thank you for taking the time to do this; now I can make my own designs without going cross-eyed trying to chart them. You gave me the light bulb moment!
Wonderful explanation! Because of you I was able to convert an interlocking pattern to mosaic that I had been stuck on for days trying to figure out. Thanks Ashlee!!
There are other colorwork techniques that don't involve cutting the yarn and there are adjustments to overlay mosaic crochet you can do if you don't want to cut it but I don't have tutorials for those options.
Hopefully I'll get to see some of your projects soon then! If you use my patterns you can share your works in my fb group, if it's not my patterns then the fb group: mosaic crochet world
Thanks so much for this video & pdf Ashlee! Question: I can do mosaic crochet with pre-marked X's, but now that I am comfortable I want to start using cross-stitch, knitting, filet, etc. charts but with the mosaic crochet technique. What happens if a chart seems to require several drop down DC's "stacked" on top of each other? Some crocheters on youtube seem to say you can never "stack" DC's in mosaic crochet, but they also don't explain how to read a chart without X's like you do. Do I just do a FPDC? Is there a formula? What do you think? THANKS! :)
Charts are drawn following certain "rules" depending on which technique they are for. In my case, my charts are drawn for interlocking crochet and also applicable for mosaic crochet. I have heard of people using other charts (like filet for mosaic) but they often have to do some editing on the fly. I am not that skilled yet 😅 and technically, you also run into the issue of using someone's work (they drew the chart) in a way they didn't intend (some people can get upset when their stuff is used improperly). It is good practice to contact the designer first! By the way, I welcome creativity from my work, so if you want to use the chart for something else that's cool with me :)
@@AshleeBrotzellDesigns Thank you so much for the quick reply! Mainly I am looking at vintage Scandinavian patterns online from old-fashioned sources... or at lettering / fonts that seem to be out there in the world as free fonts to use for other mediums. What you're saying makes sense! Thanks again!
Oi Ashlee, é uma pena que você não vai mostrando o seu trabalho, pois para mim que sou iniciante é muito importante ver o está fazendo, desculpe. UM abraço

If you're new to crocheting overlay mosaic you should check out my other videos with tutorials on the stitches. This video is just about how to read the chart.
Perhaps I am wrong, but I don’t think this system is completely right. You didn’t get very far up the chart, so you didn’t address stacked double crochets. Seeing the color or not seeing the color doesn’t work, does it, for stacked stitches. I am an experienced knitter and a novice crocheter but am very well versed in mosaic knitting. I wanted to convert a knit mosaic chart, and I did it but it’s very tedious. Btw all knit mosaic charts can be crocheted successfully (I’m referring to overlay, but probably also inlaid and filet) but many crochet mosaic cannot be used for knitting as there is a limit of how many stitches you can slip in one go. Request. Can you do a video discussing the relative pros and cons of the different methods? Also knitting, or do you not knit? I don’t know. Probably like many people I had to teach myself how to crochet, then how to do overlay mosaic in order just to see what it looks like. (First project Martin Upnorth “baby” blanket Navigator) I haven’t yet tackled filet, which to me most intrigues me-I just love reversible fabrics. Anyway, thanks. You are inspirational.
I have over 200 patterns now, so this system definitely works :) maybe try watching some of my other tutorials on crocheting the technique as well. This tutorial is just on the chart.
I also do not knit, forgot to mention that in my reply. And I haven't yet tried inlay mosaic crochet. It has only been just over a year since I learned overlay mosaic crochet and only a few months earlier than that when I learned interlocking crochet! So many things on my list to try still!
The color black on your chart was not a good choice. Since the black meant it was the pink yarn when u also had black yarn. It made it more confusing than it needed to be.
The black yarn makes the same design as the black image on the paper. It is just when reading the chart you are looking to either show or hide your current stitch (in front or behind). I made this video a long time ago and I think I would do a better job now. Someday I will probably redo it
I know. I was trying to show how to use the chart and didn't think ahead far enough to realize that people would want to use the video for learning the stitches as well. I have other tutorials on the stitches. ruclips.net/video/6YwXIqKqWjI/видео.html
That's true. The point of the video was to explain how to use the charts. I assumed people would already know how to crochet the stitches. You can learn the stitches in this video: ruclips.net/video/6YwXIqKqWjI/видео.html
You should make a video where your not distracted it's rushed it's stressing watching you struggling to finish this video so you can get to your son. For people wanting to learn this way. Please make another with way better attention and not be ddistracted I will watch it with better explanation on doing a pattern with out the x.
Three years later, and my children are still distracting. Since making this video I have finished updating all my old patterns to have X's on the mosaic charts and all my new patterns always include X's. This video was only relevant for a few short weeks and I never expected it to be viewed after that. I will add a re-do to my list of things to do.

P.s. I definitely meant to put those links in right away, so thanks for reminding me!

Ashlee Brotzell Designs. Thank you 🙏
It would be nice if we could see your hands as you crochet
I have a few videos showing how to do the mosaic crochet technique. This video is focused on reading the pattern.
I would have been much more helpful if I could have seen your hands working stitch AND the chart. Easier to follow charts with X's but good to know.
You are confusing. Maybe a little more organization
