I think perhaps the iridescent bottle with the cross on the bottom might have been an old holy water bottle. I googled a few things and found that some antique holy water bottles had an iridescent coating. Also the size of the bottle would probably support that as they often came in small bottles. Either that or could've been an ink bottle from the church or a perfume or an ointment or tincture of some "holy" sort.
The best treasure that you have is the time spent with your mum.

Yes the lock is Georgian often made by the local blacksmith. If you unscrew the lock mechanism you will often find a mark a bit like a stone masons mark.
I have around 10 of these kind of locks in my collection and they are all different. The correct name for them are rim locks and most have one lever which makes them very easy to open without a key.

The brick is part of the bottom of a kiln to defuse the heat. If yo watch Primitive Technology he makes one and uses it to make earthenware ( Termite clay kiln & pottery). The glass tube looks like a chemistry vessel.
Any chance that the glass tube is the body of a light?

I was thinking that the brick could have been used to dry the corn/wheat before milling into flour, or maybe the romans used under floor heating.

then the brick with holes I have seen objects like these and it is a multiple-choice conundrum A it is a roman hypocaust wall heating element.
or B it is a medieval to 18th-century chimney blocker for a smoking chest in which they use to cold smoke salted pork or salmon.
this smoking chest would normally be up high in the attic the chest would be metal and cemented into the chimney in the bottom of this chest there would be an iron round bucket of sorts and you would put the chimney blocker inside to further cool the smoke and prevent ash floaties from sticking to the meat. this said these things would cause chimney fires because of the fat dripping down catching fire if the thing got too hot.

thank you so much for your lovely and amazing videos! Yours are the only ones that can rip me away from a new Nicola White video! I am reminded of 'Ring of Bright Water' by G. Maxwell, and a part of me has always been in your part of the world since I read that book as a young woman, long before the internet. Here in New Mexico there are finds wherever you dig, wherever you hike, once one learns to read the land. I once annoyed an archaeologist by pulling an 8 thousand yr old arrow head from under his foot! The stone cork thing looks like a core sample, used by oil hunting geologists, but those aren't tapered, perhaps at an end one may be. I love the stone heart rocks! We find them here, but not so thin usually, & yours look finished, here they are naturally crude. You both possess a rare grace and elegance in your bearing and delivery, and intelligence as well, you are a gift! Oh, your drunken sailor song reminds me of a retired admiral I knew decades ago, in AA. His tales of flying drunk with bombs on board were INSANE! What the Navy did with that drunken sailor was AA, he is gone now and I miss him. Thanks for making me remember. I died 7 yrs ago and my memory is screwy and strange, so when I am reminded of things I've filed away too deeply, like beachcombing with Mom, it's a gift. thanks for the gifts, H. Emma Peale

Jeri is an artist, author of children's books, creates lovely gardens and lives on a small farm in the hills of Tennessee. Since you and your Mom are both artist, I thought you'd enjoy her channel.
That terracotta thingy with holes in it would make a good bee home. For none honey bees.

For those cold water pickups maybe buy one of those grabbers for people who have back problems and cannot bend over to pick things up with their hands, or fingerless neoprene gloves. I use those gloves for winter fishing. Could the glass tube be from a syringe? Another great video!
I was watching a gentleman who had bent a large slotted metal spoon and added a wooden handle. It was perfect for rescuing those little dainties from the freezing water. Don't apologise for the 'Drunken Sailor', it's a beautiful rendition.
Hi, I'm a maryport lad and I can remember playing down by the river where you were on the first video. There were old boats, post war fishing boats, lying derelict and we would play on them in the 1980's. Parts of the old slipway were still there too.
Another NM catch-up video that I had not seen before - I love the relationship you have with your mum and do slightly envy the time you spend together. My mum died at 38 from cancer, I was 17 and the eldest of 4 siblings so had a lot of responsibility from a young age, but I am who I am today because of the life I’ve lived. It’s wonderful to watch your older clips and see how much your skills have grown. That lock is absolutely amazing and Alex’s iridescent bottle is pretty nifty too.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh Huhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Got it that clay brick at 25:14 is part of a hypocaust Roman bathhouse 👌 the vented clay brick wasn't vented to allow water to pass through it, it was used with many other similar clay bricks to vent gasses and smoke out of the Roman hypocaust bathhouse.
Mum was just researching what it could be part of now! Thank you very much for that info! We will look up some roman bathhouses right away. 😊
@@NorthernMudlarks Glad to help and keep in mind if it is part of the hypocaust bath house system it was made before Romans stopped using lead pipes.
The oak lock is the Gem of the table. As you say, it's late 18th century so it's not only survived the river but it's Survived The great mudflood of 1834.

glass tube may be a "sight glass" from a steam boiler for checking the water level in the boiler
My mother collects rocks in the shape of hearts, tries to find them and pick them up wherever she’s at.
Such fun! I always enjoy your videos, I often think of my Mom while watching you two together. We used to have loads of fun doing stuff together, and I think she would have like mudlarking. Awesome finds! My favorite was the shoe and the lock, until you showed us the “beehive” brick. My heart sped up a bit when I saw it. I think you really have something there. Such key-envy!! I love old keys & locks... And thanks for realizing the Drunken Sailor could turn into an earworm! I love music, but these days - well for some years now (!) I'll get a tune in my head and it can stay there for days, weeks - supermarkets are a nightmare! Probably like you, we live in a very quiet place and I just love to hear all the birds and distant rumblings - I know wind noise is an issue filming, but you do a great job Alex at bringing a place to life with words, which is worth so much, and of course you have a lovely voice, so are doubly blessed, and with the wonderful locales they don't need a lot of embellishment!! WOW, the pottery would make gorgeous mosaics, picture frames, tabletops oh so many beautiful one of a kind pieces of art. I adore your wooden keyhole. So cool. Oh and the hearts. I love the honey jar. I love it all. I wish you guys had a Metal Detector, no telling what you could dig up. I think your concrete cork can out of lie a pipe like a hallow fence or sign gate pip could come out of just about anything really. My Mom and I were best friends also, She is 85 now we still live together but she has onset Dementia. Very sad.

@@michelewestover9330 chimneys are usually round so put two of those vented pieces together and stack them to vent gasses or smoke... I would say they're part of a Roman bathhouse.

Hi, the glass tube, is used as a " sight glass" on the side of a tank to see how much liquid is in the tank. Love you guys 😁
15:21 bit of faceted glass was probably part of the lens of a lamp.
Got very excited when you found that lock! Excellent! I love seeing the round ups! They make a brilliant closure to the adventure!
You could also use air dry modelling clay and complete the bottom of that broken brown bottle. Si-finds did that with an old roman pot he found and it looks great!
Si made a great job of the vesel! I could try fixing the bottle with resin maybe? It woud be a great experiment.
Second that. Maybe you could take advantage of the crack and push some fairy lights into it. It will make a nice nightlight IMHO.
that piece of bone would make a lovely "Toggle"for a scarf etc.

BTW The glass tube with the lines on it is almost certainly a "Sight Glass" It was likely to be from a boat & I think it's interesting just because sight glasses were often watched constantly, they were one of those things that saved countless lives in many industries in the 19th & early 20th centuries.

Hi Muddy Angels, your identification skills on the pots and bottles was very impressive, I have learnt a lot from this video :)
I think the brick with holes in it is an old fashioned air brick that is shaped to compliment some sort of architectural design in a building.
I loved that old oak lock, I've never seen one before, I think it must have come from some sort of grand building.
When I'm out larking near water on a cold day, I always tuck an old hand towel in my belt, it makes all the difference to be able to dry my hands or wipe the mud off them.

The glass cylinder could be from an old syringe. Just a thought. Loved the heart shaped slate stones and also the old lock. That brass plate you could try laying a piece of white paper over it and then take a pencil and gently rub over it and you may get some information on it. You two had a good day! since the bottle used to come with a metal probably silver top, I would say shoe polish.

I love the hearts. When I walk around and am feeling down I find heart rocks. They make me feel better and I take it as a sign that everything will be okay. Just gives me a little lift in my mood.

@@Chr.U.Cas1622 I still find them. The most amazing thing that I found was a penny that had my mother's birthdate on. It was the day that my oncologist told me that I was in remission. She passed away in 2014.

Hello, ladies. I've only discovered your channel recently, which is why I'm commenting on a 3 year old video, and I apologise if you've found information about this since. Anyway, I believe the red pottery with black glaze on the inside is Cistercian ware, possibly from the 16th century. Various types of drinking vessels were made like this. I don't know if you'll see this, but if you do I hope you find it useful! I'm enjoying seeing all the interesting things you find.

The bone was cut for "osso bucco", the Italian beef shank, cooked in red wine for 3 hours and served so one could scoop out the marrow.
Thanks a lot. You have that song in my head since I watched part one yesterday. It'll be there until probably tomorrow or the next day! Nice finds ladies, My favorite find is the big lock. Those hearts you found, you could probably glue them together somehow, drill holes in them, and screw them to your front door. Maybe tie a welcome sign on them(not to tell you what to do). Just a suggestion. Over all it looks like you had a fun couple days there. The main thing is you spend quality time together. Keep 'em coming!

If you decide to drill holes in the heart rocks go slowly. put it in a container of water, just over the rock. sparatically in an up and down motion. Use washers under the screws, night too tightly with the screws. It will be too nice to crack. Or you could shadow box them? Either way I know you will do a good job. Hello from New Zealand, a very enjoyable mudlark video thank you. The brass plate would probably have been riveted to a piece of machinery or electric motor and would have had information or instructions printed on it.

It is probably not what it is but it brought to mind a flower brick. It's kind of like a flower frog in its use. You can arrange flowers into it and set in water for the stems to drink up the water.

Hi, I enjoy your channel very much. I wanted to tell you to get the bottles cleaner and get the algae out. Use any vinegar. If you put say a quarter or half a cup of any vinegar to the final rinse water in your dish tub you will see a big difference. For stubborn stains, soak them in the solution for at least a half an hour. Then they will sparkle., Bonnie
