  • Land Rover has built more than 2 million of its trusty 4x4, the Defender, since 1948 and in the years it was produced this Landy earned itself iconic status. Just looking at a Defender conjures up images of adventure and travel. But now, it is no more.
The Defender Heritage Edition reviewed here is the last of the breed as the Landy no longer complies with modern pedestrian safety regulations. So, to give it a fitting farewell, we sent our video man, Ciro de Siena, who had not driven a Defender previously, to find out why the Defender possesses such timeless allure.
Sit back, relax, and let’s head off-road.

I'm 5ft 10 and find my 90 perfectly comfortable. Drove 500 miles in one go last spring without discomfort. Well, OK, they are noisy, but good noise.

I recently bought a 2011 Defender 90. It’s the first and only one I’ve driven. I’m six foot one and I love it. I find it very comfortable to drive.

Very cool video. From a guy that has driven a 90 TD5 and 110 Puma as well as a Land Cruiser 76 4.5 V8 TD, you need to drive a Defender to understand what makes them so appealing.

If I could have ANY 4x4, my choice would be the Defender, without a doubt.
You don't buy a Defender and expect luxury! That is why Range Rover exists. A Defender is all about its off toad capabilities, and utilitarian practicality. I would have one because they are timeless, and understated, yet immensely iconic, much like the original Mini. They were built for a particular reason, and NEVER to try and be something that they are not. They exude confidence in their ability and purpose, without a hint of. ostentatiousness. Those reasons are why the Land Rover Defender is the undisputed KING of off road vehicles. A true 4x4 for the people (if you can afford one that is).

+Brendan Mosley Yip it's pretty sad...and Land Rover have said that they want to sell way more units with the new Defender, so they going to be working on a concept that isn't as "utilitarian"...I'm guessing that means it'll be aimed at the luxury market to a certain extent.

Of course they will, small medium and large is all tata know...the brand was built on the back of these no nonsense vehicles.a defender is utterly classless, driven by billionaires, royals, farmers, builders, gardeners and everything between...the evoke etc are also utterly classless but for an entirely different reason.

i love that colour. i saw the original 'HUE' Landrover at the heritage museum last year...I'm a Jeep Wrangler TJ owner, which i love..I think it's a better 4x4 than the Landy, and better looking, albeit less practical, but i think the Defender has a very special place in the history of the automobile, and in some ways, will never be equalled..It has also never dated because it has never bowed to fashion.
Nobody, loves their Landcruiser the way a Landrover owner loves their defender..

yes i think that the 'agricultural' vehicles are the most fun/rewarding, becauase you actually have to drive them..You can also feel the machinery working which to some (me) is pleasing..Modern vehicles insulate the driver from the experience.

Real off road vehicles have large diameter steering wheels for several reasons. one is that in the event the front wheels are forced to turn, say from hitting an obstruction, the snap steering will not rip the wheel from the drivers hands or cause injury. Also a larger wheel gives more turning leverage, and also makes it better from rocking the wheel from side to side when the car is stuck or in rutted track...You might notice that 4x4 only have two spoke steering wheels too..This is reduce the risk of the thumbs being broken should the wheel snap to the side if the road wheels hit an obstruction...There are numerous other reasons.
