Sleeping container on the freeway!

  • In today's episode, we handle another overturned tractor with container on the freeway. This job was done using my 50ton rotator (aka Hulk) and my dad's 60ton rotator (aka Old Yeller) to handle the loaded container, while Miguel controlled the tractor using his 35ton heavy wrecker. The job was textbook, with the upright itself taking record time to clear the freeway.
My new "Van Lingen" method for controlling the tractor during the upright is probably my new favorite way to handle them. The power of the rotators handle the container, which brings the tractor over as well, but the equalizing sling we use always the tractor to slowly and safely rotate using the floating snatchblock. This method prevents unnecessary slamming and makes the job easier.
For the container, I used my tried and tested method (also taken from Van Lingen) of using 8' long straps (rated at 40,000lb WLL) to bring over the container while my custom container slings are used as a catch.
The load was thousands of hand packed boxes that shifted to the passenger side, making it unsafe to tow. Once upright, we lifted the container off the chassis and set it onto our new Landoll.

I do the same with my dad, I'll try to explain one of my recoveries to him, or we will be on one together and we always fight about ideas on how it should be done, usually, he'll judge me for a recovery I did like "You should have just hooked a wheel and pulled it up and I'm like "... Dude I couldn't have done that because it was pinned against a culvert pipe" But I only do light duty for now, no heavies so there ain't too much to argue about.

You got it right on the nose. Normally a wrecker would be used to "spike" the tractor, by using a low pull line to the axle or rim to help bring the tractor over. My new method works because the rotators are strong enough to bring everything over, while the wrecker up front controls the tractor so it does not slam over.

Truck driving is a Las Vegas card game, you never know how the container is loaded, can be off center any way. Making driving interesting or worse, trouble is who takes the blame when some one gets hurt or worse. Also a lots of places won't let the drivers up on the loading ramp. to watch his truck get loaded.

what is the reason you use a clevis between the hook and the sling? all the tow guys do and all the crane guys don't

What part do you mean? The sling is in a snatchblock. That's attached to an oblong, to the other snatch block. How else would you connect the snatch blocks to each other?
