      Off the top of my head, the self healing would be incredible between high and low level! Mending as a cantrip early and quickened reconstruct as a level 5 spell! Among the other ridiculous advantages of playing WF!

    One of my players made a GOO Warlock / Wild Magic Sorcerer for a homebrew campaign. The combo of Agonizing Blast with Eldritch Blast on a bonus action really lead him to be an excellent ranged DPS. He RP'd it like he couldn't control his Wild Magic so he sought out a Patron to keep it in control.

    • @thedungeon1578
      @thedungeon1578  4 года назад +1

      That's a great idea for RP. I love how the Patron really is the source of so many RP choices. I've seen warlocks that resented their patrons, loved their patrons, and I played a Bladelock whose weapon was his patron. I'm sure there are thousands of people who have played warlocks and each one has a slightly different relationship with his patron.

    i rarely take tome because of the initial reasons you mentioned (i typically pick up 1-3 warlock level so the most number of invocations i get are 2-3 with 2 of those typically reserved for agonizing blast and misty visions/repelling blast/lance of lethargy). to be able to get book of ancient secrets i'd have to allocate another invocation slot i might not have space in my build to do so. tome when you get it doesn't provide much. so if one of my reasons for going tome is just the familiar i just take chain instead, especially on caster types. blade for gish types.
    i also disagree that warlock subclass choice doesn't matter. it does especially if you're looking to run specific combos. i'll share some from some of my own sorlocks;
    1. clock 9, celestial 1-celestial is the only choice here as it gives us a way to get a cha based sacred flame for the wall of force + sacred flame combo. though of course if this wasn't a sorlock and it was a soric, any cleric subclass can provide sacred flame (even if it's wis based it doesn't matter with the combo) and i'd probably pick twilight/peace as the subclass for it.
    2. fighter 2, divine sorc 7, fathomless 1-fathom is the only pick here as this build focuses on spirit guardians speed lockdown using the halved speed from SG + tentacle of the deep + ray of frost to reduce any enemy's speed from 40 ft to 0, ideally with them on the outer rim of SG.
    3. fighter 2, clock sorc 5, hexblade 3-hexblade is the only pick here as this is a casting striker focused on crit fishing upcasted scorching ray and eldritch blast to deal tons of dmg.
    you also forgot that on the hound of ill omen through a wall/ground strat that they are coming from being unseen so they'd get advantage to attack and can't be attacked/targeted with spells.
    I'd skip devil's sight on a ranged character. misty visions is superior in each and every way as it's a psuedo-greater invis at will for you and any party members who stay inside your 15 ft bubble.

  • @TheRobversion1
    @TheRobversion1 2 года назад

    Thought i'd share my old scorcher build here (pre-MOM) since i was touting scorching ray in your other comments. it's a burst striker crit-fisher that starts of with scorching ray then sustains with EB + magic stone. level 10 theorycraft as usual.
    "Scorcher"
    fighter 2, clock sorc 5, hex 3
    shadar-kai
    asi: elven accuracy
    fighting style: superior technique-ambush
    metamagic: empower spell, transmute spell
    invocations: agonizing blast, misty visions
    pact: chain-imp
    key spells: scorching ray, eldritch blast, tiny servant, aid, magic stone
    tactics:
    pre-combat:
    trancelock 4 level 3 spells after your long rest. use 3 level 3 slots to create tiny servants before adventuring. standing orders, pick up magic stone and throw at your target.
    cast aid on yourself and tiny servants/allies. tiny servants hide in your satchel/backpack.
    while adventuring spam misty visions every 10m using an atmospheric effect appropriate to your environment such as smoke, fog, mist, sandstorm, etc. invite party members inside your misty visions and tell them to break the illusion while adventuring.
    spam magic stone every 1m. tell imp to be invisible and fly. give imp a bunch of caltrops.
    1st turn:
    misty visions active so stay in place unless enemy is more than 60 ft away. for this scenario we'll assume enemy is 30-45 ft away at start of combat. use ambush as needed.
    bonus action: hexblade's curse
    if bbeg is 31-45 ft away, step out of misty visions, hexblade's curse then move back inside misty visions.
    action: 3rd level scorching ray at super advantage.
    action surge: 3rd level scorching ray at super advantage
    free action: drop magic stones inside satchel
    TS 1-3: throw magic stone at advantage
    imp: drop caltrops between you and bbeg
    reaction: shield, absorb elements, counterspell or hellish rebuke as necessary
    2nd turn onwards:
    bonus action: magic stone
    action: agonizing blast at super advantage
    free action: drop magic stones inside satchel
    TS 1-3: throw magic stone at advantage
    imp: drop caltrops between you and bbeg
    dmg report:
    16d6 + 32 (SR) + 3d6 + 12 (MS)=110.5 average dmg on turn 1 without factoring crits
    2d10 + 16 (EB) + 3d6 + 12 (MS)=49.5 average dmg on turn 2 onwards without factoring crits
    crit report:
    24d20 rolls on 19-20 to crit and 6d20 rolls on 20 to crit on turn 1=you'll get 2- 3 crits
    6d20 rolls on 19-20 to crit and 6d20 rolls on 20 to crit on turn 2 onwards=you'll get 0-1 crit
    so yes the build has good accuracy, fights from obscurement with reaction spells if needed, great burst dmg and solid sustained dmg. functions as infiltrator/scout outside of combat.

    • @thedungeon1578
      @thedungeon1578  2 года назад +1

      Nice. I like that fact that you can be a scout type outside of combat too, while still contributing lots of damage. I think a lot of damage casters get really single minded and only try to do one thing. Also, you have a lot of creative ideas that aren't just EB spam forever (like magic stone usage, tiny servants and imps, etc.) I really like a lot of your ideas.

      @TheRobversion1 2 года назад

      @@thedungeon1578 Thanks! though i'm looking to revise this post-MOM to a version 2.0 so the tiny servants/aid are going away.
      i want to make bugbear scorcher and i'm leaning towards wild magic (tides of chaos on initiative).
      as far as trying to do only one thing, in combat yeah i typically have a couple of core tactics i focus on but i don't lean towards being a jack of all trades who can do everything. i find being specialized (being excellent at a couple of things then just above average or lower at others) helps my allies shine better and teamwork is more relevant. same with out of combat and personally why i hate the skill monkey archetype as they try to take over all skill challenges. i like better the idea that the different skill roles are divided among party members as i feel it that gives everyone a chance to shine. like for example, i'm a sorc so generally i should be good as well at the social skills (face) if i take certain skill profs. but i leave that to the other party members.

    Celestial get limited free healing, while Undying gets the spare the dying cantrip, and advantage on disease saving throws.
    I prefer divine soul sorcerer and if you mix it with Undying, you can really stack on necromancy mage that's not wizard. With some optional healing magic. I aslo like mixing it with celestial for a more potent healer/support.

    Hexblade also gives you Hexblades curse, which can be combined with hex! (and later bestow curse)
    With 8 beams (quicken), you can do 8*(1d10+5+6+1d6)=160 damage every round!
    cast hold person/monster in the first round, and that goes up to 232
    and with advantage from darkness etc, you hit quite reliable
    Also, if you take repelling blast, the target gets moved 80 ft each round.
    Most characters can only move 60 ft, and that is when dashing.
    So you can reliably keep the enemy away from you. Especially if you also use spell sniper/ eldritch spear

  • @KatanaKamisama
    @KatanaKamisama 4 года назад

    I think you should re-visit this build en lieu of the new feats and spells presented in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
    One of the MAIN attractions of Pact of the Tome for me, is you get 3 cantrips from ANY class list, and they ALL count as warlock cantrips. This means they use Charisma instead of another stat. If you take Divine Soul as your Sorcerer subclass and get access to all the cleric cantrips that way, taking Pact of the Tome can be an excellent way to pick up GEMS such as Thorn Whip, Vicious Mockery, and Primal Savagery, making you the king/queen of cantrip versatility.
    Hexblade's Curse is NOT a spell, and does NOT take concentration so it WILL stack with Hex, it just takes 2 rounds to get going. Especially at low levels having a bonus 1d6 + 2 AND being able to crit on 19-20 against a big boss is VERY strong.
    Hexblade also give you access to Medium Armor and Shield proficiency which makes you massively tanky.

    I have a character build for a demigod of fire and death (they are for a demigod campaign) they are a noble background (I wanted them to have a reputation) tiefling (I choose tiefling because everyone starts with a free feat/race feat and tiefling have a feat that improves fire magic) with 17 levels of Devine soul sorcerer (I think that should make sense) 2 levels of fiend warlock (they make some deals with mortals try to solidify their divinity) and 1 level of death cleric (they needed more control over death magic) if it's decided that the campaign will be using the Greek/Roman pantheon it's very safe to say their a child of Hades the end goal of the demigod campaign is to become fully Devine (more or less a miner/lesser God at minimum) and then become/make there own new pantheon

    • @thedungeon1578
      @thedungeon1578  4 года назад

      That sounds like a really interesting character concept. I also like the breakdown; 17 levels of sorcerer still gives you 9th level spells, 2 levels of warlock is obviously great, and 1 level of death domain cleric gives you some nice options.

    • @christianwhite8877
      @christianwhite8877 4 года назад

      Also if you don't take any offensive spells (including cantrips) from the level of death cleric (except you are required to get a necromancer cantrip) then you can truly take advantage of that 1 level by using it for access to a few not offensive spells mostly utility and shield of Faith and the cantrips are pretty much whatever you choose

    • @TheRobversion1
      @TheRobversion1 2 года назад

      personally, i wouldn't go for much dmg spells at these levels as the best ones are at lower levels. like for single-target the best ones are magic missile and scorching ray. for aoe, then synaptic static (5th). anyway here's a couple of recommended spells for 5-9:
      5th-telekinesis, synaptic static, summon draconic spirit, wall of stone (if campaign takes place indoors or in areas with alot of stone)
      6th-mass suggestion, scatter, true seeing (only if your dm likes sending invisible enemies), disintegrate (only if your dm likes sending wall of force casters)
      7th-crown of stars, finger of death (only for campaigns where you can kill humanoids freely), plane shift, teleport
      8th-demiplane (yeah this is trash level for sorcs. better to use for upcast)
      9th-wish, time stop (lets be honest though you're getting wish)

    I currently have a level 7 hex-blade warlock. I really want to make him a bit more tanking while maintaining the high damage i already have. I was thinking i could get toughness and then multi class into Divine Sorcerer. this would give me that meta magic for casting more shield/absorb element spells in my level 1 sorc spell slots as well as more Hex spells. But also i was thinking the divine sorcerer could help me stay afloat health wise since ill have things like Healing word because i feel like a few level 1 healing words as my bonus actions on f ew turns later in a fight could really help offset some of that damge and make me tankier since i get the 1d4+5 for every healing word. plus i like the idea of having healing to help out my party. but mostly i want to go sorcer multiclass to give me alot more spell slots for my shield and absorb element spells as well as a few hex if needed. Any thoughts? maybe there is a better more fun way to make this a tanky build?

    • @thedungeon1578

    • @TheRobversion1
      @TheRobversion1 2 года назад

      i'd skip toughness.
      i think you're looking at this the wrong way. the best way to mitigate dmg is not via being sturdy. its by making sure your enemies are doing nothing then just relying on your defenses for stragglers. this means, yes sorcs are the way to go but this is because you'd want more spells/spell slots and use those spell slots for control such as web, fear, hypnotic pattern, polymorph, banishment, hold, etc.
      trying to pump defenses means your easy to counter for your DM. if you pump ac, they'll send casters. if you pump saves, they'll send brutes. it's costly to try to pump both. going for control, means regardless of what your enemies are they'll be ineffective. divine sorc is definitely a good pick for death ward, healing, etc.

      Agreed with dungeon rob here. 15/5 split should work. what i'd only caution on is it's kind of pointless to plan level 20 builds if you know your campaign will end before that. for example at my own table, the campaign typically ends at level 15-16 (we start at level 6-10) so when i theoycraft builds i play for level 10 (the midpoint). if i were to extend that plan, i would go no further than 15-16.
