Nobody sings like Shirley Bassey. The rushed, clipped, breathless phrases combined with her huge, airy, long releases. It really set her apart. So dramatic and effective. And her earthiness and sensuality were the icing on the cake!

Dame Shirley is my favorite singer of all time! Being a fan for 56 years now, there's no one better live!! No backing vocals, no special light show, no dancers.....simply a fabulous orchestra and her magic voice!! Thanks for this reaction, Pat!

My father was a gangster in that era and the owner of the Copa was one of his best friends. Back then singers performing at the Copa was considered the pinnacle and Shirley Bassey performed at the Copa every year. So did Sinatra and many superstar singers from that era. My father told me the hardest tickets to get back then were not even for Sinatra, but for Shirley Bassey. That's when other wise-guys used to ask him to get them in.

Patrick, I have watched all your Dame Shirley Bassey reactions. It is wonderful to see you feel the music within your soul. I grew up with Shirley Bassey. I have all her music playing in my house and car. Shirley is in a class if her own!
I have to say, my generation grew up with phenomenal music in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. Still this music lives on.

It's a wonderous thing, Pres Pat, to see your heartfelt reactions to Ms Bassey, the same we had late 50's when she first arrived. As said before, no one can get inside a song and perform it like Shirley. Loved her since forever. I see you've also caught one of her earlier performances, 1961 As Long as he Needs Me, when she had a less staccato delivery, so smooth. The lady had come through some rough early years and it was so good to see her blossom into world renown.

WELL AFTER ALL THAT ENTHUSIASM FROM YOU YES I WILL SUBSCRIBE TO YOUR CHANNEL & WELCOME YOURSELF Mr. Patrick to the world of many of us long time fans of Britains best selling female artist in their music history. So glad you discovered her in your busy schedule.
Back in 1976 I finally bought my 1st lp by her "Love, Life, and Feelings" - an astounding triumph: Especially songs like "Natalie" and "Born to loose". Since then she became my absolute favorite female voice though I love a lot of others from Diana, Streisand, Whitney and Oleta Adams etc.
Seen her in concert in the N.Y. area 10 times from Carnegie Hall to Broadway+ others places - even had a rare chance to meet her for a minute & get a kiss, hand shake and autograph I still have framed from 1985 on my music wall. She was always ASTOUNDING in concert !
Really wish you could have seen her live in concert as so many of us have, but now she's semi-retired but occasionally will do a little something live so be on the look out. But thank goodness for video performances of her. If you haven't yet, and you get time to i'd highly recommend her early records from the late 50s on till today to see her growth in song - but that will take some time.
So here's a small immediate suggestion if you haven't:
    "Love, life and Feeling" cd,
"How do you keep the music playing" cd,
"History Reaping" collaboration with the Propellerheads,
"Rhythm Devine" with collaboration with Yello.
Pop singer Pinks dance hit "Get the party started" (she did it with a ballroom type dance orchestra + a video).
& her performance of 1 of her 3 James Bond themes she recorded (more than any one else) & watch her perform "Gold Finger" from a few years back at the Academy Awards. You'll see what we all know - she truly is the Queen of what she calls her music - "classical Pop".
Best wishes to you man !

That 'musical ride' you discuss shows a singer who can clearly follow the melodic and lyric line, but also weave in and out it when she chooses, and still hit the important musical marks. She knows from her experience you want to hear melody, lyrics and the story of the song. In contrast watching her perform the "Smoke gets in your eyes" song/ comedy sketch with comedians Morecambe and Wise is seeing two performing acts blending beautifully and hilariously at the same time. You may want to give it a try Patrick. 😊

    Hi Patrick
Your reaction of Dame Shirley is very spot on. Your so right, I have tried to think of other singers that do the same thing she does. I can’t think of anyone. She is so unique. Her performances are one of a kind with so much emotion and acting out her songs with so much body language. She is a national treasure 😊🎼🎹

didnt really like this performance because she was being to dramatic with her delivery and was half way singing it and breathily speaking the lyrics like she was in emotional distress
When she actually outright sings this song without the Drama its beautiful!
