    I love the "never heard of it" surprises that appear on the long list. That might be my favorite part!

      I hope we're in for a few of those on Tuesday 🤞 I believe nobody had heard of last year's winner before the longlist announcement... it's so exciting to think an unknown-to-us future bestseller could be lurking just the other side of the weekend.

    I love it when there's lesser known books on the list! (Although the downside is it's probably less likely they will be in the library)

      Ahh yeah it's the age-old dilemma isn't it - awesome to reward lesser-known or indie books, but then they're harder to get your hands on!

I've also vote on the 2023 booker possible, great points while mentioning it. Not to mention, I'm here for ALL the books, lol. Can't think of any not already mentioned by someone else. This is such a great video idea! You're right; we are always so shocked when the longlist contains books we've never heard but we have no idea what was submitted from each publisher. Also it wasn't until I did my tier ranking video that I realized how often we see the same names over and over on the longlist, and how that's probably just a side effect of previous listers getting a free pass.

    • @benreadsgood
      @benreadsgood  Год назад

      Thanks so much 🙌
      The auto-pass for previous shortlistees does explain how people pop up multiple times! I do think there's a nice side-effect there that authors who struggle to repeat commercial success when they're no longer the 'hot new thing' get a shot at being recognised again, even if they're not a priority for their publisher.
      Roll on the surprises on Tuesday!

    Ohhh, I love this! I'm sure they'll be at least a few that no one was expecting. One I've added to my wishlist/predictions (which I won't be filming because I'm indecisive 😅) is North Woods by Daniel Mason. It doesn't come out until the end of September so I think that's why it's being missed but it sounded great!

      Hey, thanks for asking! It’s something I need to have a think about as my current Goodreads account is my personal one with friends and family on it, and I don’t yet have any crossover between my personal life and this channel 😅
      I have been considering moving over to The Storygraph though, so perhaps that could be something more aligned to this channel. But I know not everyone has The Storygraph and it wouldn’t work for Goodreads-only users.
      Will give it some thought.

    • @benreadsgood
      @benreadsgood  Год назад +1

      Thanks! The process is all so individual to each judging panel that it’s hard to tell really. It’s possible it just wasn’t submitted, or perhaps it was and missed out. I don’t expect the judges purposefully have ‘diversity’ targets, but maybe a small chance it missed out on filling the ‘Irish slot’ to Small Things Like These?
      I also really enjoyed Trespasses though, and am pleased it has been recognised in other prizes!

    Ever since the prize was open to ANY books written in English, it's nearly impossible to predict the books submitted by the publishers or the call-ins. And adding to that unpredictability, the judges seem to have tilted towards rewarding lesser known writers producing great works. Having said that, I will not be surprise if Demon Copperhead doesn't appear on the list -- its publisher could have omitted its submission in favor of submitting works by lesser known writers. The publisher's goal is to sell as many titles on its imprint, and Demon Copperhead doesn't seem to need more publicity. I look forward to the unveiling on Tuesday.

    • @benreadsgood
      @benreadsgood  Год назад +1

      It's a fool's errand, but still so fun to speculate!
      Interesting point about Demon potentially not being a priority for submission given its critical and commercial success already. Considering how many prize lists it has been on already I think it's like been entered for everything, but if it hasn't I reckon it would get called in by the judges. Would be an interesting surprise (and something for us all to dissect) if it doesn't make it!
