What is this, a BookTube for ants?
Every book I read in 2024 (and some reading stats)
Here's the briefest of brief book reviews... for every single book I read in 2024.
All that in 20 minutes? Well, each book is only described using the same number of words as the star rating I gave the book.
I've also included some reading stats, because I know there are some fellow stats nerds out there.
Hopefully you will find some good book recommendations among these!

If you want to hear my more detailed take on these books, here are my wrap up, single book review, and Booker review playlists:

Glorious Exploits by Ferdia Lennon | Spoiler-free book review 📖

A rare standalone book review, and a hearty reading recommendation from me: Glorious Exploits absolutely lives up to its name. Clips used: 1) TV show 'Barbarians', to illustrate use of Latin 2) Movie 'Gladiators', to show Russell Crowe being forced, well, into many things, but specifically here into speaking with a southern English accent - Thank you so much for watching. 📚 Join the Read Good C...

Here's my reading pile of shame... which books are on yours?
You mentioned Lonesome Dove. If you like audio books the Audible version is outstanding - one of my favourite audio books ever.
I was happy to see Tom Lake in the list! 😍 It was also one of my favorites last year!
How can you not read 1 book over 500 pages?😮
Excellent reviews! Love the stats! Need to pick up a few!
Great list! You’ve really inspired me to pick up a few on your list. New to book reviews on RUclips and your reviews and delivery are the best I’ve seen yet.
Thank you so much, that is very kind of you to say! I hope you enjoy the ones that you decide to read 😊
I really love BIG books as you spend more time with the characters and you really get to know them. My longest book in 2024 was Anna Karenina which has just been an amazing journey. Such a reward! Although it takes a long time and perseverance to get through those tomes, as I’m a fairly slow reader, it’s more about the journey than the destination, right? I’m really looking forward to your reviews of these longer rides…
Absolutely! I've already read my first chunky book this year and loved it, and eyeing up my next one as soon as I finish my current read.
Wait...WHAT?! LGBTQIA+ is its own category?? If a book is literary short stories written by a member of the LGBTQIA+ community...it goes...where?! (P.S. loved this wrap up so very much)
Haha yeah it's weird isn't it! I think books can be multiple genres on The Storygraph so it would probably appear in both. But yeah LGBT+ stuff doesn't feel like a 'genre' so much as a theme/topic/tag. I have the same feelings about translations being talked about like a 'genre' too.
Excellent goals 🎉
Thanks Katie! 🙏
Love love this video’s swag & hype someone else liked Of Cattle And Men bc one of my other favorite booktubers kinda ripped it apart . Really wanna read Glorious Exploits bc of your feedback this video & another 📖 🪱 💚
Haha the swag 😎 I still need to review Of Cattle and Men properly, but I found it a really interesting, sombre book. Get on the Glorious Exploits hype train!
This was fun!
Thank you! 🙏
Yes to Karen Russell! I just can’t wait, I loved her quirky stories. As for translations, I’d recommend two to check out. The first is Irene Sola’s newest novel, I Gave You Eyes and You Looked Toward Darkness: she’s a fantastic young Catalonian author who creates an immense, magical universe in every novel, imbued with magic and a play on narratives and memories of centuries. The second is by contemporary Hungarian author Rita Halasz titled Deep Breath, it was very successful both critically and sales wise after its release. It’s about a young woman facing her abusive marriage and her life that falls apart.
So the huge news from my week is that I just received a copy of the Karen Russell book in the post, and I am SO EXCITED. Thanks for sharing those translations - I haven't gotten around to doing an anticipated translations video yet, but I will put those on the longlist!
My favorite review: "Beyond me".
Oh how I wish it wasn't!!! (But sadly it was 😅)
Just finished glorious exploits and the secret life. Thank you so much for these excellent recommendations. Spot on!!!
Woohoo, that's awesome to hear - glad you loved them too! 🎉
Is there a list written somewhere? thanks
I'm afraid I don't have the full list written down, as it was so long! But if you have The Storygraph, you can find my profile in the description and you'll be able to see all the books in chronological order there.
I love this challenge because I can read it entirely from books already on my shelf that need to be ready! This is going to prompt me to read what I already have. I signed up for Story Graph just to participate. I hope you love The Poisonwood Bible. It's amazing!
That's great to hear! Always good to have an incentive to shop from your own shelves. And I have high hopes for The Poisonwood Bible!
Love your content, catching up on all your past vids! Can you do a video on how you read so much and how you read in a week? 🎉
Thanks so much! I'll have a think if I can make a whole video about that... to be honest I'm always conscious of not trying to promote too much 'you must read more / reading is a competition' kinda stuff. But perhaps there's just something a bit more chill about building a reading habit. If all else fails, I'm planning on doing a Q&A if I hit 10k, and it's definitely a question I could answer in that!
Loved this, eloquent concise reviews = 5 stars. 😊 PS. Half stars could be a creative facial expression and/or hand gesture. 🤪🤨👍👎🤙🖖🤟🖕🤌🤔🤗
Hahaha a few people have suggested noises/faces/emojis for half stars now... I'm worried I'll scare people off 😂
📖 🪱 💚
Thanks for watching! 🙌
I read Milkman for this year anna-uary. It has a potential to be the very best of the year. It's kind of serious and kind of mad and dark funny. It was the first book I read this year, and following reads just can't compete with it.
It's such an interesting book! I think it felt very, very long in the end, and at times I was appreciating it more than enjoying it, but definitely a very accomplished novel that is unlike anything I've read.
I can’t believe this is the third video of these I get to see! Love it, as always, and here’s to a year of great reading in 2025
Honestly I think I'm probably the most surprised person that this channel is still going 😂 Thank you for still watching in year 3!!!
Such a fun concept! Sounds like you read some bangers, will need to rewatch to note names. Somewhat silly suggestion but maybe the .5 stars you make a noise so it doesn't mess with the words? Hope this reading year is even better for you than last :)
Hahaha I shudder to think what noises I might come out with, but it's an interesting idea 😂 Hope your reading year is off to a good start!
A number of books you've read I've enjoyed. Always grateful for you recommendations. Still need to get to Severance, Headshot and Creation Lake.
I know they don't always work out for you, but I'm glad that you give plenty of them a go and enjoy quite a few. Thanks for watching!
loved this review style!
It's always a fun one to put together. Thanks!
Well done, great fun twist (five stars)
Thanks very much for watching 🙌
'drink the milk' 😂😱 Jungle House has been on my library tbr for ages, hope to get to it soon.
If I had liked it a smidge more, I might have stretched to 'DON'T drink the milk' 🥛😂
Bravo!
Thank you! 🙏
THATwas an interesting way to summarise your very solid reading year 😊 I use star ratings but when it’s a 3 I often use the .5 . Not quite a four but more than the average 3. It’s all a wonderful game🤭 I could not enjoy Glorious Exploits. Very very disappointed because when in London in July it was the only book I bought and its a signed copy (luggage space). I thought the humour cruel and DNFed. Maybe I should try again…..
Thanks for watching! Shame that you didn't like Glorious Exploits - I felt it was a book with a heck of a lot of heart and empathy for its characters. But not every book is for every reader! If you did give it a go again, might be worth trying the audio.
I’ve read 27 of those books. A coupled DNFd. Might have different star ratings. There are 14 on my TBR I read 112 last year but that included lots of short books. When I’m ill or feeling down I tend to read romances with happy endings to cheer myself up. In November I read 20 because I had a nasty chest infection.
Ahh, a chest infection is never good, but I'm glad books were there to cheer you up. Fingers crossed for a year of good reading and good health 🤞
What a great way of summarizing your yearly reading!
It's a fun little time capsule! Thanks for watching 🙏
The most sincere praise I can offer is that I watched your review with my library app opened so I could add books to my list as you went along. 🙂 Thank you for the excellent synopsis your favorites.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind words. Hope some of these turn out to be favourites for you as well ❤️
18:21 ok wait those edges literally made me gasp, kind of love it!!
The speed of that gave me an anxiety spike Ben, lol. A couple I liked a lot more than you did, like 'And Then She Fell' (Alicia Elliot). Added a couple of titles to my tbr, thanks. Looking forward to a new year of your videos ❤
Oops, sorry 🫣 But it really is a whistlestop tour! Can definitely see why people like And Then She Fell, I just couldn't connect with the writing at all. But we're all different readers, so it's all good! Thanks for watching 🙌
Wow I really enjoyed this video. Even though I’m watching it on 1/25/25. Great suggestions and love the ambience. 📚📚
Ahh thank you! There's never a bad time to think about bookish gifts 😅
I love your book review ideas! You always come with something new that no one has done it before 😊👍
Thank you so much! I suppose quite a lot of people do the one-sentence thing now, but I decided to make it harder for myself 😂 It's always weirdly hard to explain how it works in a concise way though haha.
I enjoyed this so much and your reviews have encouraged me to add so many books to my tbr, so much so that I forgive you for hating two of my favourites 😂
Haha I'm sorry for hating on your faves! I'm sure there are some that I love that everyone else absolutely hates too 😅 Hopefully not any of the ones you added to your TBR though!
I liked this video a lot 👍🏻 thank you
Really appreciate the kind feedback - thank you!
Thank you Ben! Such a great way to approach a wrap up
It's always one of my most fun videos to put together! Thanks very much 🙏
Another brilliant yearly wrap-up Ben! that's 5 stars
Thank you so much Lorraine!!
I give you five stars for use of the word ‘fewer’ and being so bloody clever with these flash reviews! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Haha in this household we try to uphold the less/fewer separation 😂
@ 👏
