    Now that the Steam Deck is our I kind of want to see Valve try the Steam Machine idea again.

      I agree, if they made it quite a bit more powerful than the steam deck and used the new Steam OS while also having a desktop mode, that would be so cool

      While I would love to see Valve explore the Steam Machine concept again, I think Valve needs to further iterate SteamOS first. While SteamOS 3.4.x is undeniably better than the original SteamOS, and some of the complaints in this video were addressed, some of them have not been.
      I think a big part of why the Steam Deck is proving to be more successful than the Steam Machine is because the hardware gimmick (I say with all due love) sufficiently differentiates itself from a normal console and normal PC and thus justifies itself more because of it.
      At this stage I think Valve should focus on the Steam Deck and getting its teething issues ironed out. Once they do that (most likely by the second iteration of the Steam Deck) then I think the stage will be set to revisit the Steam Machine.

      Given the obvious comparisons between the Steam Deck and the Switch, the Steam Machine was basically Valve's Wii U. At a glance, I think one of the issues about the Steam Machine was that it appealed to a niche that didn't really exist. The user experience looks unpolished compared to a more traditional console and given that Proton didn't exist yet the amount of Steam games you could even run on this thing would have been much more limited, something not everyone might realize. Given the success of the Steam Deck I wonder if Valve will give the Steam Machine idea another try.

      @@EpicB I hear their next product is going to be another vr headset, this time to compete with meta quest.
      As for steam machine, I think that's what the upcoming dock is supposed to address, similar to how the nintendo switch utilises a dock to turn from a handheld prtable into a tv console. After all, from using a cheapo usb hub to output to a tv, the UI definitely scales appropraitely and works well as a console for me, but is defenitely a messy solution for now.

    God, I remember buying the windows version of the Alpha back in 2014/2015. I had just started my new post high school job at Walmart and was getting way more hours. I saw this little machine at my store for $400 or so, and went with my girlfriend at the time to spend my whole check on it. My parents were out of town so I she was staying at my house and I remember her falling asleep on the couch while I was playing with my first ever gaming capable PC. That weekend and beyond facilitated a lot of PC gaming fun, and I held onto that thing for years. It was so compact I could take it anywhere with a screen (and frequently did) and I even had my first VR experiences on it (luckily low frame rates don't make me motion sick). I had so many good memories with this thing. It kills me that I sold it to help pay for my current build. I wish I had kept that little box of memories. It wasn't just an underpowered gaming PC to me, it represents some of the best memories I have to this day. I'll never forget you Alienware Alpha.

There for then leading more developers and graphics card manufacturers to Linux? I think the point of Steam OS was to create a movement, a movement away from Windows dependency and lead developers into a more free and open software environment. Or am I wrong?

    The limitations when it comes to non-gaming functions is an interesting, and often forgotten, point. Gaming consoles are used for much more than just gaming nowadays; they are essentially all in one entertainment systems. Frankly the fact that Steam OS doesn't support apps such as Netflix is a major detractor, especially if it's trying to compete with Sony or Microsoft.

    • @Kart3333
      @Kart3333 8 лет назад +4

      +Peter Tutykhin Is non-gaming functions that important? Xbox One has much more function than a PS4 and sold a lot less! If people want to watch netflix on a TV they already have a smartTV, chromecast, setup box or a console that support it.
      I understand that convenience is the best way to keep the consumer in one platform but for a gaming system i don't think it's important

      +Zetta But the functions the PS4 does have (Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, etc.) are more than enough for most users. Hell, the Xbone's biggest feature selling points were the Kinect (which is all but dead and consumers saw through that gimmick immediately) and TV/DVR integration (which is rapidly dying at this point).

    I think this review is rather out of date. Both of the bugs mentioned by Linus - the keyboard issue and the library search issue - have already been fixed. I think it is unfair to review a product running beta testing software without making allowance for that. The real question is would a customer purchasing the product today experience these problems? As far as I can see they wouldn't so what's the point in mentioning them?

    • @GunslingerKenung
      @GunslingerKenung 8 лет назад +9

      +Stephen Bingham Well that's like saying when you bought your car from the dealership and as soon as you drove it off the lot the tires wobbled, the steering wheel went far left and only one windshield wiper worked. Sure, when you then took it back and they fixed the car you no longer have those problems but having those problems should still be mentioned. For the audience these consoles are aimed at the problems it had would be a huge turn off. Most console people want their console to turn on and dive into their games if they want to browse games they can play they want to easily see that. The review is of where steam said OK our product ready for review. You can't then be like JK wait let us fix those problems first. Also that's OS's for you they change,update and adapt quickly and info tends to get outdated.

    • @Stephen.Bingham
      @Stephen.Bingham 8 лет назад +12

      +Kensung I don't think you have understood the situation. Valve/Dell sent out review units of these machines weeks ago. I presume that Linus received one of these. They were running a beta-testing version of the system software - SteamOS. The final version of SteamOS was only released a few days before they were made available to the general public - about 7 days ago. Is it not obvious that beta-testing software will have a few bugs? That's the whole point of a beta-testing programme. What's important is whether or not the customers who actually buy these devices will experience these problems. If the bugs have been fixed, why should anyone care?

    • @TheNnnnnnnnnnkkkkkkk
      @TheNnnnnnnnnnkkkkkkk 8 лет назад +1

      +Stephen Bingham well then blame valve and dell for releasing review units with unfinished software, what was Linus to do, sit on his hands until the final software relase....

    • @Stephen.Bingham
      @Stephen.Bingham 8 лет назад +5

      +Pedro Bretones, it is perfectly normal for companies to release "preview" versions of tech items for review. Other reviewers seemed to have no difficulty understanding that this was beta software. I believe that it is normal for companies to provide briefing notes for the reviewers. Perhaps Linus simply didn't read them.

    • @deenycest10710
      @deenycest10710 8 лет назад

      +Stephen Bingham You have a point. If that was the case, perhaps Linus should have mentioned it in the review. He did not. Maybe Linus is anti valve or Linux? I think not. Are there any reviews out there with the "final" and fixed version of steam os? If so, have other problems like user experience issues, specifically exclusive content been addressed? And for the money, will I be able to use this as a pc? How difficult is the learning curve if that is the case? Because to move a pc into the living room and provide a console experience, it should be a seamless straight forward process to access any and all features. Otherwise, why did valve even vie for the living room space? Is there another agenda here? Or two? Please for the love of all that is good, explain this to me!

  • @EposVox
    @EposVox 8 лет назад +6

    "SteamOS has NOTHING that doesn't run on the core Steam client" - while I see where you're coming from w/ the Halo and Xbox example, one of the core tenets of PC gaming is that we don't want platform exclusives. SteamBox is the opposite - ANYTHING can run on PC and now a console (well, as support develops). A SteamBox exclusive would be HUGELY polarizing and problemmatic for the community.
    The rest of the points are decent.

    You just recommended buying a windows license in a review of Steam OS, I think you miss the point. Linux is a better OS, its open source, more secure, mostly free, fast, more customizable and not controlled by a big corporation, but big companies do not develop for it. Why? Because people like you do not even give it a chance because more software currently works with Windows. How are developers meant to be encouraged to make more software and games for Linux when there are people like you who do not even give it a chance.

    • @seaman78athome
      @seaman78athome 8 лет назад +16

      Jade ok More developers don't develop for Linux because it isn't a better OS. It is just another OS, and one that's a lot less user friendly to those who do not use Linux on daily basis. Yes, you can make it act and feel like Windows or Mac but the most useful features are accessible only in shell which resembles DOS more than any other OS. While that's great for some people, it isn't to a huge majority. As far as your comment regarding big corporations, those donate a lot to the open source community, they help it thrive so don't assume that just because a corporation is big that it should be hated. And on the topic of open source, it has it's down sides too, like getting support for a problem may take a LOT longer than when you are dealing with a big corporation. As far as your security comment goes, while true somewhat, no OS is full proof. Both Windows and Mac OS(Linux based) have gotten better at security. I remember the days when Mac community claimed to be unhackable...turns out they were just as susceptible as the other guys.

    The only way this would really have worked is by getting proper support for games being developed for Linux and OpenGL first. After that, you can get all your little things on the hardware side sorted (like pre-built systems).

    While I agree that SteamOS would definitely get more adoption with an exclusive title, it would be a shot in the hand for Valve to do this since they wouldn't sell nearly as many games or products and thus wouldn't recoup development costs. It seems to me that Valve should take hold of Linux's open potential and allow developers and users alike use it in some way that they can't use Windows. They could possibly fork the Steam client for Linux to take advantage of its features, such as cgroups, to make it faster than its Windows variant. Tight integration with Wayland and efficient use of Vulkan would also improve performance. If Valve can update SteamOS in this way, it's possible that they and Dell can make the Alienware steam machine competitive with other consoles for the duration of its lifespan.

    Until game developers stop using DirectX and start using OpenGL instead, Linux will *never* be a platform that can be used for premium games. DirectX will always be the preferred engine of choice, either because that's what the game developers are used to using, are lazy, or are too stubborn to change. They aren't realising that Linux is becoming a much better place for gaming these days. The fact that OpenGL works on both Linux AND Windows confuses me as to why game developers aren't making the switch already. Unless there's some kind of influence or financial reward that they get for building using DX...who knows.
    The games that do run on Linux though (I use Linux exclusively now, but still have to maintain a Windows install for those games that don't work under Linux) are really good, work really well, and granted that NVIDIA's closed-source drivers are a bit flaky and all over the place (and AMD's are even worse), once this gets sorted out (which I'm also hoping that with Valve shipping Steam Machines using said NVIDIA chips will influence the NV developers to sort this out), Linux will be a top notch gaming experience like Windows which has dominated the PC gaming market for so long.
    Then, and only then, will gaming under Linux, and devices running SteamOS, have a good place in the gaming market. Until then, this machine's price tag is so far over the top for something that won't play the latest titles, something that most people buying this will want to be able to do.

      +Dan Jones OpenGL will soon support directx emulation, and they have always competed with eachother for features, each one adding the features that the other comes out with first. Keep in mind OpenGL has been around a LOT longer than directx and works on every platform you can think of. Hello, iOS, Android, what do u think they use? directx? i don't think so.

    • @djinnsmith6407
      @djinnsmith6407 8 лет назад +1

      +iTzPrime thank you Microsoft employee for telling me that directX is better. In 5 years no one will use Directx because direct X only works on Windows while OpenGL works on every platform imaginable.

    • @dannosaur7
      @dannosaur7 8 лет назад +1

      +saiyate If OpenGL gets a working DX emulation then this would be a *massive* step forward for those running Linux. Or hell, even OSX. Even if the games weren't natively built for Linux, I've heard of a few random success stories of people trying to coerce Windows games to run under Linux using Wine (I myself lack the time and patience to try this out, but I think if you fiddle around with it enough, you can get GTA V working in Linux). If OpenGL can figure this all out, and keep on top of the new DX releases, this entire argument goes away more or less as it becomes irrelevant what operating system you're using.

    In my opinion Steam OS needs a lot of improvements, this is true. But I also read a lot of comments saying "Linux suscks bla bla bla", but Linux have nothing to do with Steam OS apart for the fact that the second is based on the first! Also, in my opinion, it's too early to talk about the future of Steam Machines. Look at Android. When Android was released there was a lot of negative reviews, but now it's the top mobile OS!

    I recommend Steam Machine consoles because you don't have to worry about wasting tons of money on home and handheld game consoles that come out every year. For example, I live in a small house and I don't have enough room for any more consoles. I am bored to death with Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft because you have to pay to play online for a month or a year nonstop. Steam is better because you don't have to pay to play online for a month or a year. You can play online for free on it, but you will still need to pay for your internet service. Every year, Sony, Mircrosoft and Nintendo's consoles keep going out of style every year and you have to keep spending tons of money on next-gen PlayStations, Xboxes and Nintendos nonstop until your house is full of nothing but clutter. Steam is game-downloadable only because you don't have to worry about stacking copies of games on shelves nonstop.

    I ALMOST hit the dislike button because for a second I thought you were advocating platform-specific titles.
    Rant:
    After running a Hackintosh for several years with MORE than adequate hardware (i7 CPU, 32GB RAM, SSD, and Nvidia Geforce starting out - built over 3 years ago), it's the platform specific titles that really hurt my Mac gaming experience when there really wasn't a need for it.
    Even Linux gaming (thus SteamOS) has been hindered by Windows-only titles (due to DirectX I presume); while still being available on Xbox 360 and Xbox One - or Playstation 3/4.
    We really need to get past all this platform-specific nonsense. Game developers need to realize that there would actually be MORE sales if they just made the title available for ALL consumers - regardless of platform.

      And get less performance? OpenGL might be easier to use, compared to DirectX, but in their latest iterations, DX is simply faster. This wouldn't matter to most smaller indie game studios of course, but bigger studios that make AAA titles would want that extra performance.
      The future of Linux gaming is Vulkan, not OpenGL. It is open, and it can actually compete with DX12 in performance.

    I would love a "steam machine" as a console setup in my living room. I actually love the design of the boxes. I just wish they were more powerful, now that we are 8 years out. I love the cases, but they'd need to be more upgradable if they revisited this idea. Like the Node 202 was always my preferred console style pc build case. But give it some steam livery.
