I do a lot of work in data centers, and I have been told by a few them that their highest cost is the electricity bill for the air conditioners, if there is no aircon, you use less power = more efficient. I can't remember any specific details but one of them was saying that if they replaced all of their equipment with components that could survive in higher temperatures and remove the air conditioning all together, that they would save an absolutely monumental amount of money. it would be quieter too - those fans sure are noisy. They said the biggest hurdle in doing that is the temperatures would easily climb to 50degrees Celsius+ and it would be very difficult to have people do work in there from an OHS standpoint.
i was confused about one thing this guy said. did he mean they have air conditioners up against their racks pushing the warm air into an isle where it rises to their secondary cooling, which would be the copper pipes with water that then runs outside through a cooling tower? are they using a secondary method of cooling to reduce the power consumption of their air conditioners?

Very cool video . Im always amazed how most people don't realize the hardware back end required to make the internet and all our "cloud" applications work.
This video genuinely seems very interesting, it really shows how much there has to be done that is happening behind the curtains, it's really fascinating to me at least, and I was surprised about the how high the security level they have, and all the infrastructure is just mind-blowing, so much work into just having "some" servers. Great video!

This is incredible. I never really thought about the scale of the hardware involved. One question, when a HDD fails, do you try to recover the data onto the replacement or do you just accept that it's gone and nothing you can do about it?
there is some thing called parity, even if you lose hdd, you wont lose data. it's store in bits and bytes in hdds. so no file is completely saved in a single harddrive. even if a hdd crashes, putting a new hdd will recover the parity. ruclips.net/video/EMipZFaJtgw/видео.html

It’s my dream to work in one of these buildings one day. I love and live for this kinda of stuff. I’m going to college for a Networking and systems Administration degree right now hoping that one day I’ll get to this.
Do the math, there's a formula that was made in the ~60s that predicts the multiplier of computing power available in a certain amount of time in the future. It has been accurate so far. I forgot name of the guy, but it is a law in science.
+Will Sterben Do you mean the amount of data stored on a chip for the average consumer or Google's data centre will be the size of a chip? I think by then DNA would be used into the mix.
Google probably holds about 1450 exabytes of data (but I cannot find any reliable sources). According to Kryder's law, hard drive density increases at pace of about 40% per year. I don't think there is any direct law for chips so I will use this law instead. Right now you are able to purchase 1TB chip. With these parameters it seems we will be able to store Google's data on chip in 43 years.
Kakuzu Senpai that will no longer work because the size of the transistor and p-n gate is reaching its limits.quantum tunnelling is dominating further this. we need a revaluation in the future.
So? Companies do it all the time to do their stuff. There's nothing wrong with a massive corporation like Google using a competitor's products for things like designing, programming, etc.
This right here is the technology that humans were able achieve since. This is face of true technology and I respect google for being so open and narrative about it. True Marvel of Technology at it's peak 👏👏👏

id love to throw a huge neodymium magnet into that room
all old spinning type harddrives have neodymium magnets in side them so your neodymium magnet most likely would not do anything oO.
true i was just wondering why they have spinning type hard drives in a google server room i imagined theyd have tons of SSDs
comes down to cost per meg ATM old spinning hdds are still cheaper but thats changing fast, i would say in the next 5 to ten years spinning platters will be dead
yea i read today that the price is dropping a lot right now because of those new portable ssd usbs
Yeah magnets bitch!
in 30 yrs such a data center fits into a small restroom.

Couple of questions
How many server locations could be spared if you guys erase old data.
How much precious drinking water is used to cool a server plant? An hour?
Is it true, that 1 plant could suply 1 small city of energy?

Very cool video . Im always amazed how most people don't realize the hardware back end required to make the internet and all our "cloud" applications work.
This video genuinely seems very interesting, it really shows how much there has to be done that is happening behind the curtains, it's really fascinating to me at least, and I was surprised about the how high the security level they have, and all the infrastructure is just mind-blowing, so much work into just having "some" servers.
Great video!
google looks very modern but i have been hacked youtube channel "Quan EB" and google is completely helpless to support me. google does good marketing but it's really bad

Yes I did, but It's Google not Microsoft.
This is incredible. I never really thought about the scale of the hardware involved.
One question, when a HDD fails, do you try to recover the data onto the replacement or do you just accept that it's gone and nothing you can do about it?
There will be multiple copies. It's a big data system. When a new HDD is placed, it restores the lost data onto the same drive.
there is some thing called parity, even if you lose hdd, you wont lose data. it's store in bits and bytes in hdds. so no file is completely saved in a single harddrive. even if a hdd crashes, putting a new hdd will recover the parity. ruclips.net/video/EMipZFaJtgw/видео.html
This is an enterprise environment, dude. All critical data is going to be stored on redundant disk arrays and regularly backed up.
each individual server has multiple drives that are empty, so when one does fail, it automatically gets dumped onto an empty drive, via RAID-array.
I hope all 5 of the same comment was enough lol
My god!! That cooling system is mind blowing!!
How does the security ensured? By adding unwanted ads around google???
underrated post
Look, the ads is making me sick!! I had to scan my Pc many times in a month in ordered to make sure there are no virus effecting my Pc, if I've not mistaken some of the ads posted in google contains virus or maybe it's from some download page that I accidentally clicked in. Somehow, the ads are not necessary i'm suppose. By the way, what's about the underrated post all about?
Rakesh Menon Google cant post ads with virus....... It'll affect them too... :/

Plug in a USB Killer
EHHH...
Not even a USB slot on those servers.
Not that it would matter. They're mobos are probably super high end and able to handle it anyways.
Not usb ports from what i've seen and most likely those high-end machines can handle an voltage overload.
Yeah I know haha
lmao none of you have ever been in a data center have you..
So where does the NSA taking all of your data come into play? LOL

Probably they have access to every single server in there that allows them to bug into our history and browsing.

...Damn dood that's the best custom water cooling loop I've ever seen, the overclocks must be insane XD
its not water, its some sort of Ln2 and Freon so the servers can run 24h a day, but notice their cooling fan are VERY LOUD!
Wonder how long it will be before we can get a Google data centre on a chip.
Do the math, there's a formula that was made in the ~60s that predicts the multiplier of computing power available in a certain amount of time in the future. It has been accurate so far. I forgot name of the guy, but it is a law in science.
Yaboi Vilhelm you mean Moore law.. U bitch
+Will Sterben
Do you mean the amount of data stored on a chip for the average consumer or Google's data centre will be the size of a chip?
How do you power this amazing place?
Probably with a wind farm...
