@@locuspocus3822 nope, the information travels in the form of light so basically no electricity is used. When the info reaches its destination (a country) it gets converted into electrical signals. If you use a Wi-Fi router the electrical signals reach the router and get converted into electromagnetic waves.
As a network engineer, I liked this type of teaching. We call it layer 1 to layer 7 , layer 1 being physical layer and layer 7 is application. At layer 4 (network layer) fragmentation take place. there is lot of switching of packets and routing involved as well. A network engineer works from layer 1 to layer 4 mostly.
Hurricane María hit us pretty hard -comunication wise- People would drive hours away just to find a bit of signal to talk to their loved ones (mostly on the mainland) & let them know they were ok. "The 'cloud' is a *marketing* term" OMG this one sentence is eye-opening. I really thought the cloud exists as a virtual world, when really it was just bunches of copper wires and fiber optic cables
Not really, the cloud refers to the services that are available via the internet, not just the connections that they talked about. The same thing as the “world wide web”. Except people use “the cloud” to differentiate heavy duty services like access to things that were traditionally only available on your local computer . Like word processing, accounting packages, databases, Etc
Jason Weaver I do exactly the opposite. I store all my important information with spideroak which encrypts all my information so no one ... not even their administrators can unencrypted it or snoop on it while it is being transferred. It stores versions of files so if I have overwritten something by mistake I can get the old version back, and the files are duplicated across multiple data centres so even an earthquake won’t destroy it. Compare that to a local computer or hard drive where you are one corrupted hard drive or house fire away from Losing it all.
The cloud is basically hosting your data on multiple servers instead of one, so when one server goes down, your data remains safe and still accessible. In simple terms, whatever data you save on the primary server, there are multiple clones of the same data saved in multiple servers in various geophysical locations.
I thought this comment was satire until I read the responses and realized how many people don't even know what a server actually is. It's not something anyone really needs to know anyway, but It's easy to assume everyone knows most things you know.
it really is amazing everything that has to happen in a matter of seconds for a text to send or a webpage to load and most of us just take it for granted. Imagine trying to explain this to someone in 1850 or even 1950. It would sound like complete science fiction.
I've just seen this documentary and I have to say, like somebody who knows NOTHING about engineering (is that the word? sorry, I'm not native speaker), that Im really really IMPRESSED about this. I thought that.. I don't know, but this is really amazing. Now I know how this everyday thing works and I feel really nerd about it haha
Just recently two of these cables supplying access to South Africa had breaks in them, and due to heavy winds, the ship sent to repair them couldn't go out yo repair it. So we were left with extremely limited, congested, and slow Internet access to anything outside of the country. Think pings high enough to not be able to play your online games. We need more backbones to countries like this. Honestly.

They partly do but compared to the terrestrial optical network it is slow, low capacity and expensive but on the other hand it has great coverage so it is viable option for very isolated and remote areas far from the network of landline cables.
@@qwe5qwe566 satellites were never used for comunication that's a myth. Satellites are in Ionosphere where there is all type of magnetism and interpherence etc that would be really silly to comunicate through satellites when cables, ground antennas and ballons can do it 1000x faster , effective and cheaper.
The internet is truly amazing, honestly one of the most revolutionary technologies of our time. It has made our planet so much smaller and enabled incredible things to happen.
I don't think "How Does the Internet Work?" is an apt title for this episode. Even though it is informative, it doesn't really cover all aspects of the modern data transfer techniques and infrastructure , the wires have to lead to something ! The servers , the organizations and bodies involved etc. were not talked about. So "How is the world connected" may have been a little better, I guess

STRANGE WAY OF TRYING TO THINK ! ?
As a network engineer, I liked this type of teaching. We call it layer 1 to layer 7 , layer 1 being physical layer and layer 7 is application. At layer 4 (network layer) fragmentation take place. there is lot of switching of packets and routing involved as well. A network engineer works from layer 1 to layer 4 mostly.
Why is the 7 layer OSI model still used when TCP/IP is what we use?
Hurricane María hit us pretty hard -comunication wise- People would drive hours away just to find a bit of signal to talk to their loved ones (mostly on the mainland) & let them know they were ok. Just before you mentioned the Tonga internet disaster, I was thinking of it. When I heard that the cables under the ocean had been cut I was astonished! Because I did not know that is how the internet got there. I remember telling my very savvy friends about it and even they did not know that there were literal, physical, lines on the ocean floor that were providing the internet. It seemed like a magical piece of knowledge that I should have already known about. Great episode!

Compare that to a local computer or hard drive where you are one corrupted hard drive or house fire away from
Losing it all.
They partly do but compared to the terrestrial optical network it is slow, low capacity and expensive but on the other hand it has great coverage so it is viable option for very isolated and remote areas far from the network of landline cables.

They do now. Ever heard of Starlink!
@@qwe5qwe566 satellites were never used for comunication that's a myth. I don't think "How Does the Internet Work?" is an apt title for this episode.
Even though it is informative, it doesn't really cover all aspects of the modern data transfer techniques and infrastructure , the wires have to lead to something ! The servers , the organizations and bodies involved etc. were not talked about.
