Cynthia Lennons book "John" (haven't read her other book) is also giving great insight into Johns upbringing, and Mimis role in it.

Yes, I have read both of Cynthia's books too. I LOVE Cynthia, she was such a kind and classy woman. I was lucky enough to meet her and have my photo taken with her at a Beatles convention in New England back in the early '90s. Her book is heartbreaking in parts, she truly loved John and I believe she continued to love him through her life.

I read this book and it's predecessor many years ago. The Lennon's /Stanley's were quite a dysfunctional bunch. All the 4 children Julia senior had, had a tough time in their formative years. But Julia junior really shines a different light on the story of John's adolescence. A great book. Thanks for sharing

Hi, I have this book: "John Lennon, My Brother" (together with Giuliano, Geoffrey , publ. 1988) and now I'm wondering what the difference is to "Imagine" - you write that you have read both - what are the differences?

    • @scally1969
      @scally1969 2 года назад +5

@@vinyl_marmalade That was the book I read to. Not to much difference really. Maybe a few new memories, obviously no input from a ghost writer or co author. More of the on going fight with John's estate to get to the bottom of the cottage he allegedly bought for the family.
Very similar question to the difference between A Twist Of Lennon and John, both of Cynthia Lennon's books. Essentially the same book just a bit more polished and a few other memories.

On Oct. 21, 2017 I was lucky enough to meet and talk with Julia Baird at a Beatles' event held in Kent, Ohio (which is also the town that Kent State University is located. I graduated from there in June 1969) Anyway she signed my book with a nice little personal message. While talking with her I found out that we are just 4 days apart in age! I knew she was born in the same year as me, but didn't know the actual date. She was very nice and I was pleased to get a photo of us together. Her book is VERY VERY interesting and there was so much in it that I never knew. That is saying something because I have hundreds of books on the Beatles as a group and on each of the members by themselves. SO it was VERY nice to have a book that was so full of information that other books never had. I am SO THANKFUL to JULIA for writing this book about her family history and what it was like for her and John growing up. GLAD you enjoyed the book as well. I HIGHLY recommend it to ANYONE that is a fan of John Lennon and what to know MORE about his upbringing and his extended family in Liverpool.

Another great video :) I've got this book and it was really an enlightening read. It did make me watch Nowhere Boy from a different angle too - there is a snippet of a scene involving Aunt Mimi, which I wouldn't have even paid attention to if it hadn't been for the book. My favourite moment was when Julia and Jackie went to a Beatles concert and how John took care of them afterwards, very touching.

Read this book last year and found it a very interesting read. Like you say it would make for a good story even if you didn't like John Lennon. Very sad one for sure. What comes to my mind is when Sean Lennon interviewed Paul and asked about Julia, said he didn't know a lot about her. Makes you wonder if he has ever spoken with Julia Baird or if she has been kept away from John's family with Yoko. I know Julian must be aware of her because of Cynthia. Anyway loved your review, have a wonderful holiday!

I didn't like the way Paul was depicted either, especially since he looked like he was about 12 instead of 15 or 16. I wish the actor playing Lennon had more of a resemblance to John, but he looked NOTHING like him...AND he had blue eyes. Maybe they couldn't get the actor to wear brown contact lenses. The film was Ok, but I knew that there were a lot of inaccuracies in it.

I have heard Julia discuss John and all the crap that went down between their mother Julia and Mimi. I understood it was coming from a distinct point of view but Cynthia's accounts of her interaction with Mimi validate much of what Julia had to say. It's not a flattering picture to say the least. But then John's mother was no saint either. I am as far from a Yoko fan as you will find East of Eden but I will say this, at least she let John get some of his frustrations out with the whole primal scream bit. But how much did she reinforce John's insecurities? As Cynthia put it and John's sister seemed to validate this claim, John ended up marrying his aunt Mimi in the end.
What a mess. Still, I might give this book a read. I have read and heard so much on the band over the years that I didn't think there was much left to mine but I wasn't aware Julia had written book. Perhaps I'll give it a read. Thanks for the recommendation.

A lot of biographical films will take "poetic license" with the stories, or will combine things due to time constraint, OR just create an event to make it more interesting. So it's hard to know what is true and what is not. I would say that "Nowhere Boy" is "BASED" on John's life at that time....which really means....it's not totally factual.

Fantastic info Andrew mate. I love that you bring us things like this that are other than just the music or the show business career of the Beatles because I also am interested in the real world lives of and family of the Beatles and what really happened. The music is the main ingredient of course and collecting those physical medium copies of the music is what I do but these sorts of other things bring a much needed extra dimension to collecting and to understand your musical heroes and having love for John and other fabs mean I also have love for their families and a desire to know this stuff. But oh goodness,I hope it's not too expensive for the book signed as collecting is becoming more and more expensive as time goes by naturally and because of inflation. Just out of curiosity Andrew have you noticed a huge increase in the amount of money certain sellers are asking for Beatles records now? It's unbelievable. Some people think I'd they have a Beatles record it must be worth hundreds or thousands of pounds. I've seen people asking £500 for standard copies of A Hard Day's Night which you can get for £25- £100 depending on condition. People asking £700 for a Sgt Peppers which should only be like £50-£150. And even some along £200 for CDs which you can get for £3-£7

@@AndrewDixonMusic Yeah. Obviously I'm talking about only a few who think they can ask such HUGE prices just because it's a Beatles vinyl. I think it must be younger naive sellers maybe, or people just getting into it and just believe Beatles and vinyl means huge amounts of money. But even on average more money is being asked for second hand vinyl and it seems to be if it's the Beatles it gives a license to say "RARE BEATLES VINYL" OR "RARE BEATLES CD" and ask silly money. Maybe these are one of sellers, but I have seen a lot of it recently where I've never seen it before where sellers are asking hundreds for just standard copies which can easily be gotten for like I say £25-£100. I'm talking about eBay by the way Andrew. Not out there in brick and mortar. I have to qualify that, so maybe it's naive eBay sellers. But yeah I was sent an offer of £449 with a discount of £50 from an eBay seller of a hard day's night with absolutely nothing special about it, just a standard copy worth about £50 because of its decent condition and I was just amazed at this seller thinking they had given me a huge discount. I have exactly the same copy around the same condition which I bought about 3 years ago for £25. But however the book you have the link to is very very good value for money and I was surprised and will be placing my order this payday.

Believe me, there a lot of people out there that WOULD pay those outrageous prices because they don't know any better. SO, if a seller is asking hundreds for an album, book, whatever, that is NOT worth that much, and someone DOES pay them that large price.....well, they just made a lot of money. I think it's sad. I could NEVER try to do that to anyone. You really have to be careful on eBay and try to do research on any a seller's huge asking price, before you buy.

hi Andrew, I haven't read this book but is the story your suggesting about his aunt Mimi coming to the rescue differ from what's in mark Lewisohn's book that it was agreed she'd look after him. Take care over there.

I think any potential difference is in the word "agreed"! I'd have to go back and read that section of Tune In again to remember what Mark said, but I think that's something I'll do soon.

Hi Andrew, in this video you're saying a couple of times that this book shows that it was actually quite different than the stories we've read in other books. But how do you decide which one is true?

This book to me seems very convincing based on it having come from Julia's own memories and those of the people in her family (and others such as Michael Fishwick) closely involved personally in the events.

It's a great book, very interesting. The Beatles story is quite dysfunctional certainly from John's side.

I was just trying to decide if that was Hornsea or Withernsea... It's always hard to believe that the subject of the song Julia was someone born (just) before the First World War. And Mimi was significantly older. Very different times.

Cynthia's "John" book is also one I have read a few times. When Cynthia became pregnant with Julian,it was still seen to be sinful to have a child out of wedlock,so she and John were felt obliged to get married, whether or not they were suited.

I suppose Julia didn’t know about the bullying and tormenting of younger boys to John’s school. He has the reputation of being ‘cool’, but to those young boys he was just a thug and a bully. NB this was way before his mum died
