- John Lennon's family and childhood has always been a subject of interest for many people, filled with tragedy and mystique. When you think of the sister of John Lennon, the first one who comes to mind is likely Julia Baird, right? Well, there's surprisingly more to it than that.
It wasn't until 1966 that a 22-year-old nurse living in England discovered through her birth certificate that she was actually John Lennon's sister separated at birth.
She was sitting in her living room watching a special about the Beatles on TV, when an old family friend would say something that would forever change her life: “You see John right there? That’s your brother.”
She stared at the screen in shock, seeing a striking resemblance that she never noticed before, and it was only then that she thought to herself, “yes, it really is true.” She began looking through dozens of magazines and newspapers, cutting out any photos of John Lennon that she could find and hid them in the drawer of her bedroom. She was terrified that she would be betraying her parents if they ever found out what she had learned.
Pedersen was currently working as a nurse and already had intentions to get married,
which required a birth certificate. She knew that her mother kept a tin box in her bedroom containing all the family’s documents. When she was alone, she peaked inside and found an aging adoption paper labeled “Liverpool County Court.” It read her full name “Lillian Ingrid Maria Pedersen” and her birthday. She then looked at the top of the print and saw a second name that made her heart sink:
“Victoria Elizabeth Lennon.”
Confronted with so much overwhelming information, she started to cry.
Was her whole life a lie?
Why was she given away?
How did all of this happen?

So much of John's life, was so sad. Unsurprisingly, it led to a man with very ambivalent feelings about family life.
I swear that John had lots of unknown siblings. Honestly, he had such a terrible childhood (like his mother dying, father leaving, living with Aunt Mimi).
Many have those life issues that are considered terrible but but it’s about how we react to them as life does go on but everyone’s brains are not wired the same. I don’t consider Lennon’s problems terrible as that’s a bit too harsh considering he was able to live a steady life w/Aunt Mimi. I lived w/numerous relatives after my Mother died when I was 11 but found stability after living with my Grandmother when I started High School. Lennon was still able to concentrate on his music & become successful but nobody, even a strong self confident person, is left totally unscathed from whatever they considered their Family problems to be. I don’t think Lennon was traumatized any more than anyone else, but again, it’s all how a person ends up reacting to it in letting any negatives shape their life
Ingrid (originally Victoria) had her book published by a French publisher. In it she says she believes her biological father was not someone called Taffy Williams, and that her adoptive father, a Norwegian mariner, strongly resembled her. Her adoptive mother Margaret who was from Liverpool, asked her not to contact John Lennon and Ingrid respected her wishes out of love and loyalty to Margaret.
Also she did apparently spend a few days with Yoko in New York but I don't know what year this was.
It must have been tough for Julia (John Lennon's mum) as women in the 1940s didn't get any financial help so she was forced to give Ingrid (Victoria) up for adoption. Then the following year Mimi took John from Julia, which was very strange. Common speculation is that Mimi contacted social services but this is very unlikely, they wouldn't have been interested. John was a much loved healthy and happy child, what was the point? Julia Baird (another sister of Johns) always said what a wonderful mother Julia was.
"It must have been tough for Julia" ... really? Yeah .... Keeping your legs closed is tough !! "Financial help" ... as in everyone else (those who can keep a decent family) is forced to pay for her basterds ???
Now, this really sounds fishy and confusing here. I need to read this book. So, wasn't Julia's name was on the adoption papers, right? The way this story sounds, the adoption father is also the biological father? The sensible part is that the last name, Lennon appeared on the papers since Julia was still technically married to Alfred. It would be kind of a coincidence if Marfaret and the real father of Ingrid adopted his own baby. i mean, did he just go to the adoption center and say, "I want this one"? To me, it sounds like Ingrid just wanted to stay out of the limelight. Does it explain in the book why there wasn't a family reunion.[Edit] After doing a little research, I can now understand why you say Taffy isn't the biological father, that is unless Julia had an affair with a 10 to 12 year old kid in 1945.
I have lost overview of this family ... just goes to show how the welfare state screws up everything !!

Very interesting interview with John's half sister julia Baird about this. Why would she try to contact yoko but not her blood sisters? I hate to say it but seems maybe money . I was gonna say maybe yoko to learn about john , but his sisters could tell her a lot & any aunts of his that were still alive.
I dont understand why her family would disown her if she kept her baby girl? Sounds like a mess. Mimi stole john by taking her to court bc she was sleeping in the same bed as little john & her daughters father bobby dynkins. I guess in the 40s that was looked down upon by the courts. Julia would have married bobby but alfred would not give her a divorce. I guess seeking a divorce on grounds of abandonment was not around in England back then? Then the dysfunction continued when John abandoned julian. Very sad.
Agreed. The laws were quite different and strict back then, at least in England, and probably in some states in the US for all I know.

But when did Lennon actually learn that Ingrid existed. The video says it could have been around 1966 at a Family reunion by his Aunt Harriet & allegedly spend money on private investigators to locate her yet close to 15 years later, Lennon had not yet met his half Sister

so this video is really full of a lot of errors....at first I thought it was legit. but never heard about this, so I wonder....more intriguing is the where abouts of Yoko Ono's missing daughter and the very real possibility that she was still married to another man when she married John.....

Yoko has long united with her Daughter Kyoko starting in 1994 when Kyoko became a Mother herself. Ono was married 4 times to 3 Men in total. Ono’s second marriage to Anthony Cox, Father of Kyoko, was annulled because Ono neglected to finalize the divorce from her first Japanese Husband so Ono had to get her affairs in order to legally remarry Anthony Cox.

This is a great well researched video. Thank you very much I love John Lennon. I believe John really wanted to find her. He seems like deep down he was missing real true family roots. She looks exactly like the mom Julia and John. I’m glad Yoko met her and she met her half sisters. Sad John missed the chance to finally meet her.

So the narrator said the long lost half Sister wanted to meet the Lennon Family, eventually met her half Sister Julia at the 20 year anniversary of John’s death but a reunion with the Lennon Family never happened & the narrator said she did not answer to Julia the half Sister afterwards so it’s not making sense as to why. Perhaps Julia Lennon has the story to that in her book

You poor misguided soul... It has been proven time and time again that gun control does nothing to reduce crime or violence. In fact, it creates more. Because, when a citizenry is armed, the criminals are less willing to commit their offenses. The cities with the most restrictive gun laws have the most gun crime. This isn't opinion, it's fact. More people are killed with knives than guns. More people are killed with hammers than knives. Evil people will use whatever they can.
My point is that we don't need more laws to lessen the violence problem in our cities. In fact, John had the very answer himself. All we need is love!!!

Actually, it might have expanded their popularity because more people would have known the hardships that John went through from being abandoned by his Dad (although he did have a choice to go away with him) and also being taken and hidden away from his Mom until he was shown where she lived when he was in his early teens. The thing I think that would have diminished their popularity would have been streaming music.

According to what some comments are on this thread, Ono did respond but that is surprising considering she did not have the reputation for being kind & reaching out to any of Lennon’s Family
Ingrid/Victoria did meet her half sisters, spoke to them, they just never got close with each other, remained pretty much strangers. Even though they did believe her. The rest of the family didn't really want to know either. She waited far too long to come forward, I think.
The video said Ingrid said it was because of her adoptive Mother that she didn’t come forward but most adoptive Parents do come forward in discussing/telling their adoptive Children they were adopted.
@revrotunda3206 Yes, apparently she found the paperwork proving that she's Julia Lennon's daughter long before she came forward. But she didn't want to upset her adoptive parents by trying to get in touch with her biological family. She did that after her adoptive parents were dead. BTW, she suspects that her adoptive father might have been her biological father and that's why he adopted her. If that's true, then Julia Lennon had an affair with a married man and then made up a story about a guy who got her pregnant but then dumped her as he didn't want to have to bring John up as well as the child Julia was pregnant with.

Interesting story. I would like to read Julia Baird’s book, Imagine This, that was published in 2008 as there may be some insight into that story. She was partial to her Mother, Julia, Sr., so she explained why she thought it was cruel to remove John from their Mother but perhaps she never really liked, respected or got along w/Aunt Mimi but John did. Aunt Mimi appeared to be a strong willed strict Woman but did provide stability in John’s life as well as her Husband, John’s Uncle George, who was also instrumental in bringing stability to John’s life

"Well, you can't both have the same name," the authorities replied. "I'm going to flip a coin." This was around the time of Raould Amundsen's exploration of the North Pole, a Norwegian name that everyone knew. So he flipped and our branch "lost" the real name of Pedersen but gained the misspelled "Amundson," which (-son) is Swedish.
Nonetheless, when we went to Norway in 2016, a time when Americans were not especially welcomed, we got the red-carpet treatment. Free chocolate, lots of smiles all around...it was a great trip.

John's half sisters believed Ingrid/Victoria. They even put her name (along with their own names and John's name) on their mother's headstone. Even though they never became close with her. That means she had pretty solid proof to confirm she's Julia Lennon's third daughter. They wouldn't just believe anyone who walks in from the street and says, hey, I'm your sister.
Ingrid/Victoria grew up with her adoptive family. And that was all the family she had, as far as she was concerned. Her mother gave her up for adoption, it's not entirely clear who her father was. So she wasn't going to upset her family and go pursue a brother (What if he doesn't even want to know! What if he tells her, go away, you are only after my money?) and other relatives. BTW, when she met her half sisters, they were pretty cold and not particularly accepting with her.
Besides, Ingrid looks so much like Julia Lennon. Same shape of chin, lips, cheeks, eyelids, nose. Julia's other two daughters look more like their father, especially Jackie.
