That is a very good VCT system. The valve springs set the position. The actuator just traps oil to hold the position. There is no oil pressure used for timing.

Very very odd to see this happen on a Gen 2, I know the Gen 3’s have been documented as dropping the phasing to 0 at a stop or decel randomly but nothing in Gen 2. Always glad to see someone who knows what they’re doing documenting things like this.

Redline’s top of the line is NOT API approved. You can not or should not use oils with high ZDDP especially the phosphorus over 800 ppm in newer cars. SP rated oils is not what Redline is, it is good for high performance where API is not applicable

A bit easier to get that driver side valve cover off is by turning the oil dipstick guide counterclockwise and pulling it first, else risk breaking it. Have had same problem with my 2016, but only replaced the one “causing” the 22 code, now I think I should have replaced all four… That solenoid was sticky. Good video. 👍

VVT systems when designed correctly, can be reliable. I can give you an example of Toyota's VVT system. As long as you change oil with a quality brand and filter. Eg.Mobil,Eneos,Valvoline,Castrol,Pennzoil,Napa, even super tech, supers, and Kirkland signature brand would be good. No problems. No need for Amsoil,or any fancy brand. Not saying those oils are bad,it's just that in most cases a name brand oil is fine and often inexpensive.
