Any books you've tried with.... questionable topic that ended up being great? XD
Any wholesome books to balance them out?
Life Ceremony or Earthlings by Sayaka Murata. Both include similar topics to the ones in Tender Is The Flesh. Especially Life Ceremonies. I thought it was REALLY fascinating!
I have Earthlings on my library waiting list! I've heard it's pretty disturbing
I just read Cackle by Rachel Harrison, and it was less scary than I anticipated; it's a dark witch book mostly about friendship...quite different from everything else I've read! If you like Practical Magic, I think you'd like this! Also, Ralph makes me want to actually like spiders
@@BookswithEmilyFox It IS 😆
For wholesome book: Please read Better than people by Roan Parrish
out of a whole 22 min vlog I'm hooked on the fact you said no I'm not going to apologize for how I look I'm human. There is no way you could always be "done up", its a vlog of your DAILY LIFE. Who wears makeup all day everyday, it's ridiculous that vloggers feel they need to apologize for what they look like.
Right? There’s a lot of pressure on social media to always look out together but the change of season has really affected me this year and it’s okay! Taking it easy instead of forcing myself made things so much better!
the way i saw the thumbnail and tried to fit, "i read a book about cannibalism and i liked it" to the tune of "I Kissed a Girl" LMAOOOO
I was totally thinking about that when I wrote it XD
Omg literally came here to say the same thing😂
I like how your standards for men's behavior in books is high. Frankly, I think we should all be less accepting of crappy behavior in books as in life. Demand more! We deserve it!!
Yes to not apologizing for your appearance! I also hate when people do that, I love that you stopped yourself 🙌
When I read Tender Is The Flesh, I didn't see it as a social commentary about what/how we eat.... I experienced the story as a social commentary about how we treat each other as human beings...how people are dehumanized so that anything deemed of value about them can be "consumed"...I was in tears by the end. The author of Tender Is The Flesh did an interview with The Irish Times where she says "I have always believed that in our capitalist, consumerist society, we devour each other". After reading that article I found myself in tears again. If you would like to read the interview, it was published for The Irish Times on February 21, 2020.
Tender is the Flesh is one of those books that I became more appreciative of the reading experience the further I reflected upon it. As gruesome and disgusting as the cannibalistic aspects of it were, my husband and I are still traumatized to this day (after reading it over two years ago) by Part 2 Chapter 6.
"Every character needs therapy and that's good, representation." Lol 😄
It’s good to be self aware 😇
The library is looking soooo good!!! 📚
Tender is the flesh is a fantastic read, not easy in some ways, but really thought-provoking

I absolutely love that you just hung out with us, just the way you are. Really felt like we were just chilling, talkin’ about books. Very relaxed and open. I also think I am going to try that Tender book. Very intriguing!
People who like Tender is the Flesh might enjoy the movie Soylent Green, sort of the same premise but 50 years ago (minus any elements of cheese manufacturing). The movie has an iconic line, but to share it would spoil the movie’s ending for those who don’t already know. Nom, nom, nom!😉
I love reading vlogs 😂❤️
I'm so excited for new jar !!😂
That’s the biggest one they had so it better work lol
Emily, I'm now in the midst of reading, "The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches". I got my hands on this book via Kindle and I find it to be a very compelling read! I am on Chapter 3 of this novel and can't wait to read more of this author's work! I thank you for reviewing this book on this video and I'm looking forward to more content in the future!
That 1984 comparison is finally gonna make me pick up this book, thanks emily
YES TENDER IS THE FLESH!!! Excited to know if you liked it 🤩
The thumbnail gives it away a bit lol
I love the chill vlog. Very relatable. The library is going to be beautiful.
JUST THE COVER of Tender is the Flesh scares me! >< I can't. ... lol!
xx
I wanted to read some romance for once, and I read The Beautiful Ones by Sylvia Moreno Garcia and...... It made me feel the same way you did with The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches.
I think it's also kinda grumpy/sunshine trope. Since it's from Sylvia Moreno Garcia I was curious but ughhhh the main female character's just adorable she's literally way to good for the love interest. He's a walking red flag. Dunno how I finished that book.
I already bought established title for everyone to Christmas 😄
In Denmark, we call Blue Tac elephant snot. It’s grey here.
The butterfly garden by dot hutchison I enjoyed it but I know it isn’t most of my friends cup of tea
You aren't being too picky. I've had someone say something similar to me. Having someone react like you did in the moment would have meant the world to me.
It's much harder to deal with when you're in the middle of it!
Happy Thursday Emily hope you have a great weekend xoxo 😚 🍁🎃👻👻🍃🍁🍂🍁🎃🍃🎃📖📖📚📖📖👻🍃🎃🎃🍂🍁🎃🍃👻👻🎃🍂🍂🍁🍃🍃🎃📚📖📖📚👻👻🍃🍁🍂🍂🍁🎃🍃🍃🍁🍁📖📖📚📖📖👻👻🎃🍁🍂🍂🍂🍁
Have you read Slewfoot by Brom? I'm reading it now and I'd be very curious to hear your opinion.
Ahhh I’m so glad you didn’t hate Tender is the Flesh, I’ve seen so many people hating it that I’m actually rereading it now to make a rant about it 😂
I don’t think we’re meant to “enjoy it” haha it’s super interesting though!
I watched your video earlier today so when I realised that Tender is the Flesh was in available on Scribd, I decided to give it a try. I am back here 33% in the audiobook and omgwtfpleasesendhelp. This is haunting. Thank you for the recommendation I guess (!??!) 😱
It only gets worse lol
Sorry/Enjoy

I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump after reading Catherine House earlier this month. From what you’ve said, The Very secret Society of Irregular Witches sounds like a potentially good way of getting me out of it, so I’m off to see if it’s in my library
What did you think of Catherine House? I started it earlier this month and am currently about 15% in, and could use some advice on whether it should be a dnf or on my pile of shame.
@@zachreads I stuck with it, thinking there was a lot of potential in the story. Honestly, I wish I hadn’t - it didn’t get anywhere near where I think it could have done with the intrigue/weirdness and when I finished it, I was just glad it was done. I’d dnf and move onto something else :)
@@katetamsyn Thanks! Glad I can move on guilt free, I'm almost done with "Sundial" by Catriona Ward, I'm absolutely loving it! It got me out of my slump. If you're interested in something on the spooky side I recommend it
@@zachreads I don’t usually read spooky books, I get annoyed by them a lot of the time - people making stupid decisions or open ended books with no answers really bug me. I’ve just had a look at Sundial and it sounds interesting, I think I’ll pick it up this weekend as my Halloween read. Thank you :)
@@katetamsyn I just finished Sundial, and still really really like it! It does get a bit intense sometimes so let me know if you have any trigger warnings you'd like to be made aware of. Otherwise if you check it out let me know how it goes : )
Have you read Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez yet? I have many (all) of the feelings you have about Romances, and this is the first one that was perfect in my opinion… I almost gave up on Romance as a whole 😁
Will you be moving your bed to a different room, or will you be sleeping in your library? And I don't think you should worry too much about what you're sticking on the walls, as long as you save a little bit of paint to fix up the wall later.
There are 3 bedrooms so one is now the library, the second one (with the books) will be my bedroom and the third one (the one with the cute boho headboard) will be the "beauty room"!
If you want to read some non-toxic romance with found family theme and a pinch of timetravely scifi, I'd recommend One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Have you read Persimmon Takes on Humanity by Christopher Locke? Although it's categorized as YA, it is as beautiful and haunting as Tender is the Flesh
I personally think that the Sense and Sensibility mini series is waaaay better than the movie so if you’re up for that I would give it a go too
Oh good to know thank you!
I was working while watching this and when you were talking about the romance I was like... wait there's a romance in Tender is the Flesh???? Hahahaha. If you are seeking good romances I would highly recommend The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton - it is so silly, but in the best way. Also Accidentally Amy by Lynn Painter - which I admittedly haven't finished but I'm like 60% through and loving it. & It takes place in Fall!
Well technically there’s somewhat of a romance I guess 😂💀
@@BookswithEmilyFox oh gosh 😧🤣
I want to read tender is the flesh so badly 😩
It’s a quick read!
Is it wrong that I loved this book? Tender is the flesh was a crazy and gory experience to me. And because it's written by an Argentine (vast majority are carnivores) gave me a lot to think about it.
That's why I admire you!.. How did you figure out the end!! ("Tender is the flesh")
Of course it is not enjoyable and as I don't read "gore" things, this one was unique. When I was reading I became veggie like for three days.
This one is memorable for the feeling I got.
Spoilers
I didn’t see him getting her pregnant coming but once she was…
I definitely didn’t feel like eating meat or cheese after this haha
PS. I made sure to mention I was planning on recording my reaction to the ending haha I completely forgot so many ebooks finish before the 100% 🙄
You're absolutely not too picky when it comes to romance. I've only just started reading romance this year (at 30 lol) and I find that a lot of cishet romance books are filled with the male character being walking red flags and are always doing things that are unforgivable to me. but oddly I have a higher patience for screwed up characters when it comes to reading dark romance books (although i have a whole thing about being against people romanticising dark romance books but that's a conversation for another day 😂)
Okay, JUST IN CASE there is ever a virus that makes us unable to eat animal meat, I'm just going to mention I have a great recipe for roasted veggies with couscous and feta that we could try out before deciding to eat the other humans.
But... You can't consume the lactation from animals either, so would the feta be made from human milk?
Your hair tie looks like the tender is the flesh cover 😂
My husband listened to the video sitting in the same room and about "tender is(...)" commented - the title should be: "it tastes like chicken" ;D
I guess you will like 'The Flatshare' by Beth O'Leary. Male lead so supportive and comfort. I even don't think someone like him exist in the real world :)
I don't think you're too harsh. If anything, I think our society is too willing to forgive people who do this. We always make excuses. But someone who knows your weakness and uses it against you? Fck no. To me that is utter betrayal. Not only for breaking tenuous trust but for being the kind of person who looks for the deepest wound to hurt the others... That's psychological abuse. And if they're willing to do it once they'll do it again. I'd rather be alone than put up with someone whose knee jerk reaction is to hurt someone like that.
Agreed! The author tried to make it look like they both had issues (they do!) but what he does is unforgivable!
❤️📚
Yuck on both books but I really enjoyed the vlog and seeing you paint in your pjs.
SPOILERS FOR TENDER IS THE FLESH
Anybody else was surprised that it was illegal to use "the meat/heads" as slaves/sex slaves? I feel like so many people would get killed after getting caught doing just that. There's no way it would be rare.
Do you think the virus was real?
I was surprised but at the same time, I thought that even if they were seeing humans as produce, and animals I thought it was a way to create a false/ questionable sense of morality in society as well as with the barbarian comparison to slavery, etc. I think it all adds to the hypocrisy of their world and makes us think ok, that's wrong but raise humans to eat them later no?
100% can see the virus be a whole conspiracy, I wished the book had explore a little bit more that specifically when the main character goes to the Laboratoy
Overall it was a 4.5 read for me
You know how people raise farm animals purely with the intention to eat them once they're grown? If such people were to have sex with these animals, that would be bestiality and hence a crime. In the book, these animals are substituted with the "meat" and having sex with the meat would then be equal to bestiality? Maybe that's why it's a crime? That's my best guess... But i do think it'd be really hard to regulate tho
Absolutely 100% do not think the virus was real, I get so enraged when people dismiss the book because of the virus “plot hole” 😅
Absolutely agree the virus is a government-created lie. I just loved that they touched on so many of those other things: big-game hunting, sex work, the prison system, new religions… but the thing that really got me was the scavengers at the end attacking the trucks and stealing meat, that just really put things over the top for me (and those poor puppies, traumatized 😢)
I haven’t eaten beef or pork since reading this book a year ago
Blu tack may leave oil stains on your wall. How about you try washi tape?
@12:18 I was taught as a child fight clean then makeup dirty
Yes! I never understood why people feel so comfortable treating the people closest to them the worst
You were taught as a child to make up dirty? What does that even mean? How does a child "makeup dirty"?
@@jelatinosa with playing outdoors. Sledding in the mud. Us kids were sent to play while the folx did their making up.
I liked the ery chill vlog tbh, also... Tender isthe flesh sound very disturbingly intresting. Also sth that would need a palete cleanser after but sometimes u ar in the mood for truly disturbing
Haven't finished the vid yet, but I'm super picky with romance as well. I'm ace and just...romance is almost always what ruins books for me. 😅 Either the characters end up acting totally unlike their pre-googly-eyed selves, or one of them is just insufferable. (Usually a male character, and it's played as being protective and defensive and Very Manly and terribly romantic, which I can't stand.)
Tender Is The Flesh is pretty high on my tbr, I'm looking forward to it!
Hi how are you? I'm from Portugal. I'm looking for booktube to learn English. I'm looking for people from different countries and different literary genres. Where's you from and what's your favorite genres? Thanks for help.
I want to read tender ist the flesh but as a vegan I was a little confused why we would need to go cannibalism? People could just be vegetarian?
Vegetarian no but vegan yes. That's what poor people are doing but they mention in the book that not everyone is doing well with that diet. Plus some people will always want to do the messed up thing. They mention that some people hunt others for sports (they even specify preferring things like pregnant women for more "fun") :/
Now that you've finished Tender is the Flesh, for context, you should check out the movie Soylent Green from 1973.
I suggest you pick up the audiobook for sense and sensibility (There are many in the public domain). I also felt the same, and I wouldn't 've finished it if not for the audio. JA is a very talented writer, but that book is 100% gossip and social hypocrisy, so overwhelming and not fun to read (at least for me).
Good idea! I'll have to choose the right narrator. For some reason, classics are much harder for me to follow since the narrator often have accents combined with the "old english" XD
@@BookswithEmilyFox I usually go for the British accent just for the "authentic" feel
@@BookswithEmilyFox I got the free audible one narrated by Rosamund Pike. I thought she did an absolutely excellent job. I felt the same way about the second half, but it was worth it in the end.
You aren't insane when it comes to romance books. This is why I don't read contemporary romance novels 🤷♀️ I prefer historical/paranormal
No no you're not to peeky. A also see a lot of redflags when i read romance
Hello Hello hi 👋
I haven’t read “Tender Is The Flesh”, but I don’t understand the premise. If humans couldn’t eat animal meat, wouldn’t we turn to vegetarianism/veganism before cannibalism? 🤷🏼♀️
Don't think Tender is the flesh will be for me as a vegan haha.
It reminded me of a movie that is often recommended for people interested in veganism (I can't remember the title but I couldn't finish it) Like 1/4 of the book is the explanation of how the human-meat is... prepared and it was :/
@@BookswithEmilyFox yuck haha
I read the tender is the flesh and I didn’t like it that much
C’mon Emily! EVERYONE needs therapy! Lol. I also draw the line at human cheese, I’m not past eating human meat though lol (I’d literally would eat the billionaires)
With the cost of living they are starting to look pretty tasty
I didn't like Irregular Witches. It was like a children's book with the f word being used a lot - didn't jive. Didn't like the sex scene either. The "wholesome part" was ok, but seemed like two books into one. I didn't like him either.
I mean, I think I can live without meat... but not without cheese...
I have to go get tested because I might be intolerant to dairy and not just lactose and I'm terrified XD
@@BookswithEmilyFox that's scary
not sure how I got there but there is a girl on tiktok making cheese from her breast milk and discharge 🥴🥴🥴 I’ve been vegan a while but if I weren’t this would do it for me 😂
Ugh. I 100% agree with you about the male character going to far when he says "What do you know about family?" That's just full-on a**hole and not forgivable.
Right? It’s straight up malicious.
Miscommunication is one thing you can work on but not that.
I liked The Very Secret Society but HATED the romance. That part you mentioned reminded me of an ex who would always say “don’t start a fight with someone who’s willing to be meaner than you.” Okay psycho.
I never understood how people can be so comfortable being the meanest to the people they are the closest to :/
I had to DNF the witchy book you read. I was just bored.
It's definitely very character driven!
Bizarrement quand tu as dit "Cheese !!!"
It is a grumpy/sunshine romance between a witch and librarian. 🪄📚☀️😠
Yes! In theory it's the perfect combo but...
@@BookswithEmilyFox I haven't read it. Have you read Go Hex Yourself by Jessica Clare or The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling? More witches.
HUMAN CHEESE???? 🧍♀
Cannibalism is one thing but... cheese?!?!??!
As a mother this honestly doesn't really gross me out that much. At least it's not lethal like cannibalism?
@@frogggirl2 yeah, I don't think human cheese would be so gross, since most people were breast fed or consumed human milk at some point of their lives, and it's actually meant to be consumed by young humans. If the milk was given voluntarily by a breastfeeding mother who produced an excess, it would be fine to turn it into cheese imo. What would make it gross is if they obtained the milk the same way they do from other animals. They would have to force women to be continuously pregnant and give birth over and over, remove the babies after a couple of days. I assume in a society where this would happen, the children born would be considered a byproduct, and if they couldn't be productive, they would have to be disposed of in some way, probably slaughtered for meat, like most calves are. Human veal would be an inevitable next step in a world where "human cheese" was commodified in the same way other animals' lactations are.
@@jelatinosa I have not read this book because, while I've heard it was good, I was turned off by the subject matter. After this comment I feel strongly that this was the correct decision. 🤮
@@frogggirl2 I haven't read it, so I didn't base my comment on the book. I was just basing it on what I know from studying animal husbandry and animal agriculture in my pre-vet curriculum in my university.
