  • Welcome to the eleventh episode of Skelly's Garage!
Last episode's call of "unfaffed" may have been a bit premature. There is still plenty wrong in #Faff, my 2001 BMW 540i. Sadly.
The rear suspension, still requiring a lot of bits and bobs to make it work properly, is our central focus in this video.
Many parts of the suspenion are broken, but by the time we're done with this effort, the only thing that'll be broken is my wallet. Alas.
Until then, enjoy the latest installment of "Watch a Man Suffer While He Fixes a Vintage BMW."
Let me know what you think!

So glad to know that 5000 miles across the globe there is another person trying to fix a E39, occasionally making it undrivable in the process.

i have seen numerous posts on german forums about the bushings not fitting into the wheel carriers after pressing the old ones out. actually seems to be a common problem. although i realy dont understand why. cant imagine the old bushing somehow getting bigger and washing out the hole in the wheel carrier...
anyway, looking forward to the next video - keep it up :)

The old ball joint does seem to have taken some of the bore with it coming out. I know of this sort of thing happening with big heavy duty trucks, but I was genuinely surprised when it happened to my E39.
I… really hope I don’t hit this issue on the other side.

I appreciate you being here! It’s difficult work but we are slowly growing. Now if only I could figure out why my videos top out at 250-300 views, that would be great. But even with that, I’m doing it for the fun of it.

For removing bolts stuck with galvanic corrosion: blowtorch and an air-hammer

I almost bought an air compressor and air hammer. Almost. As far as heat goes, it doesn’t play so nicely with rubber bushings, so it wouldn’t have been the best of ideas.
I’ll have air tools at some point, but so far I’ve made it only on electric, and I’m hoping to maintain that as long as possible.

Hi Sam I feel your pain being a bmw guy myself .
I like the teaser in the corner and I'm almost getting use to the caterpillar that keeps appearing on your upper lip from time to time what does the partner wife ,mother in law think to it .

Thanks for watching! My partner seems to tolerate it so far. We’ll see how it goes in the future. It is not a permanent fixture, but I do enjoy it for the entertainment value.

E39 rear wheel carriers are made from marmalade. Or peanut butter. They are this soft and from the first minutes of this video I was sure you'd soon find out that Meyle should ship new bushings alongside new wheel carriers. Been there, done that.
Now, I'm in the process of replacing the oil valve in the oil filter housing, the one that fails and lets oil leave the filter when you shut of the engine. Not cool.
For some reason, this four-wheeled mechanical misery makes me a million times happier than my partner's Toyota, that just never misses a beat.

I am surprised at how little information about this failure exists on the internet. But alas. I am surprised that instead of aluminum it is made of cheese.
But I suppose it is the delicious option!
      Thanks for watching!
